 You entire issue seems to be that Maguire was playing forward than his usual position in injury time, when we needed a goal. Which is perfectly normal, expected and I’d be disappointed if he wasn’t.

Clearly you havent read the posts. Not surprising. The issue is that he went to ground that far up the pitch taking himself out of the defensive action on the counter attack. This leads to Bruno Fernandes covering him at CB with an obvious outcome of a forward going straight past him

It doesnt matter if hes far up the pitch if he doesnt commit and not win the ball. Or if the ball goes past him but not the man and he gives away a freekick to break up the move. But when your CB takes himself out and your AM is your CB trying to confront a player moving into a goalscoring position with the ball, things have gone tits up

I have no objection to a CB going forward for the equalizer in stoppage time. We can question his effectiveness as an attacking threat, but this was an all-hands-on-deck situation where an equalizer would have been immense, moreso than the normal equalizer in a league match. But his performance overall last night was positive and we shouldn't be looking to Maguire for a flogging.

I guess the people that try to criticise him that much for the last goal are a bit disappointed that he wasn't exposed the whole game like they expected Neymar and Mbappe to do. In my opinion he had an excellent game yesterday and had not much problems with those world class attackers - both goals of PSG were more coincidence than bad defending (as ours).

Then he went upfront with us being a man down and chasing the game and he created two chances (Pogba, Fernandes). Unfortunately both didn't go in. And then he doesn't look good in one last counter attack with a lot of space against Neymar, maybe the player with the best technical ability on the world, and suddenly he is a joke and had a bad game?

Totally fine if you don't like Maguire and obviously he isn't as good as Van Dijk and has his flaws but try to be fair. He had a really poor start but is playing well and coming back to form in the last few games. Since the 1-6 against Spurs he has done really well.

Yes I was thinking about that effectiveness. If he’s in the box to head the ball it is one thing, but if not, I would prefer Lindelof to move up as his passing is faster and he has better penetrating passes.

Is improving and loved his surges forward.
He needs more intelligence to gain. Hope he gets better.

That 3rd goal, he was done because he lost Neymar's movement as he went to block what he thought would be a shot.

If he holds his position he clears that.

He's passing it better according to the situation but plenty of room for improvement.

let’s leave it mate. Going round in circles.

He lacks leadership when things get difficult in a game and won't get in the refs ear enough for a proper captain

I haven't got a problem with him playing but needs to give up the captaincy to Bruno

Maguire is a better dribbler though and also better at shooting. Passing ability is fairly even I'd say - Maguire is better at spreading the play to wider areas while Lindelof is better passing up through the middle.

West Ham 1:3 Man Utd
Him and Lindelof solid in the second half today and let down by those around them in the first half.

Starting to have much more of an impact on our attacking play, passing has noticeably picked up and lot more urgency when he steps forward.

Despite a crap first hour, defensively i thought we were decent and looked solid. The problems were further up the pitch in that period!

He is bang under virtually every high ball ffs. How does he do it?

He has been very good for a while now. A rock defensively, making much better use of the ball and is available for every game.

I know everyone love to chat about his price, but the question should be whether he is good enough. He is clearly showing that he is, and much better than that.

Very solid defensively. And very good on the ball - both passing and stepping into midfield and getting away from the press. Has been good for a while as others have said.

Today Maguire looked like a 80m defender. Nothing went passed him, king in the air and brilliant passes forward. Contender for MOM.

Hahah i was thinking the same today. Its a great feeling seeing them pump balls into the box and knowing he would be there to clear.

After the first few games of teh season i was worried about him but hes showing real metal. I just wish he was a bit more vocal!

Top level performance once again. I feel he will really come into his own next season hopefully alongside a quicker CB. If he has this level in him and can put it all together consistently for a season or two he'd be balancing on the edge of great and worldclass I'd say. Still a way to go for the big man though.

Much better passing from Maguire. Pace and weight and FORWARDS!!

Still plenty to improve. Needs more leadership organizing that defence as Captain and needs to improve reading in defence and attack but happy he's growing into the season but plenty more to come I hope.

Solid

I didn't like the positioning by the whole back line for some of their overlaps and shenanigans when they get free-kicks. Someone has to take charge and order.

You just sound like you’re trying to be clever and find some critique when clearly, Maguire was a dominant captain today, won everything and forced the entire team up the pitch in the second half.

Yes. I’ve also noticed that in past few games, and these surges easily bypass opposition midfields and help create overloads.
His personal defending, and defensive organisation has also dramatically improved since the horror start to the season. Good to see him get his confidence back.

I literally praised him the posts before. Do you want me create a temple of worship for him in order to be able to point out something he can improve on?

It was actually, the post you cite, a general point about the defence. If coco the clown or Maldini was in that defence he would be criticized too.
The organization and positioning at set-pieces in key moments has been poor throughout the season for the backline.

In the first half and first 20 of the 2nd the team as a whole was poor, putting extra strain on the defence back line. Telles was caught short regularly.
In free-kicks we do have an issue conceding regularly. That is a combo of giving the free-kick away, the coaching and the defence organizing themselves.
I might remind you that when Vidic came to the club he was very poor. Read the posts and separate your love of a player from the point mentioned.

Is Maguire your Da? Most posters in here want him to do well. Some worship him. Others want to crucify him.
It's not a 0 sum game.
Reminder: He is our Captain. You have to deal with it at United. He's doing better. Good.

That was a very strange post that I couldn’t help but read in an Irish accent for some reason.

No idea why you’re banging on about Telles, no
idea what Vidic’s rough start to life at United coming into a back 4 for the first time in his career has to do with anything.
No idea how Maguire can’t stop other players giving away stupid fouls.
Also no idea why a temple needs creating? Just praise a good game when a player has one innit? You don’t always have to think you’re some football genius who can spot the little things others have missed.

Oh, and some people really do think captains are supermen, they aren’t. Stevey Bruce couldn’t make Denis Irwin play well or defend well, Denis did it himself. If Telles stupidly sells himself in midfield it’s cause of Telles, not because the skipper is using the remote control wrong. If Telles stands still at a corner and let’s his man have an open goal, once again, it’s on Telles.
A captain can’t make a professional footballer do simple professional footballer stuff.

Had moments but I thought him and Lindelof were all over the place at times today and they often come as a pair rating for me, and feck is their lack of mobility exposed without Fredrick.

He's been in some really good form of late. Solid again and some of his passing through the lines were class, especially the one to Bruno, which lead to the Rashford chance.
