The more I see him and the more he reminds me Raul Albiol, I think that he is at the level Albiol had at the end of his Madrid career and with Napoli. They even have the same qualities and flaws, good in the air, decent with the ball but staggeringly slow and heavy. If we can bring a good and fast sweeper, we will all appreciate Maguire's good sides.

Why do we always end up overpaying so much? Too often either the fee or the wages create unrealistic expectations and it puts the players in question under huge scrutiny.

£80 million is just such a burden on Maguire that I feel next season he will be under the microscope every game. The comparisons with VVD are already happening, but after this season, I feel it will get even more divisive.

Thats something that Man united fans say, not even Leicester fans cared about him. What does he do well? What is he really good at? Because I can tell you what hes not good at.

So clearly Ole and his staff have 0 clue. England have 0 clue. He is England's first choice CB.
He is clearly a very good defender, but if you are not willing to accept that then so be it.

Yes, he lacks pace. It is easy to go around telling people what they are not good at. I don't care what Leicester fans think, he is our captain for a reason.

He is realy very good in the air. And he is good on the ball. I can't say that he is bad defender. But he is 30 mil defender for whom we gave 80mil and now we as a club are doing everything to show how he is some kind of leader or new captain marvel. In reality he is good defender but not for clubs who want to play attacking football. Because his complete lack of pace and agility is a huge flaw.
We made huge mistake by signing him

Defenders pace has nothing to do with team's ability to play attacking football. Pique, Hummels, Vidic played high line and in very attacking teams for years. We can;t play attacking football as we don't have right balance. Even Leicester played attacking football with Maguire in the side when Rodgers took over.

Maguire is also slow to react in the box, something that happens often. I think there will be question marks around him all the time, as long as he plays for ManUtd.

With his price tag and because it’s us, he’ll always have that added pressure

You can't blame people for judging Maguire together with his pricetag, especially after they see how van Dijk has lifted the team singlehandedly with a similar cost. For a 80m defender, you expect him to carry and upgrade the defence instantaneously, not one who needs to be complemented by a certain partner all the time. If Maguire was bought for 30m, we'd have had an extra 50m for other positions, meaning we could have invested in a right winger or brought in Bruno half a season earlier. Either way could have brought a larger impact to the team.

You've misunderstood the idea of my post. I actually agree with what you say, my question was why do we always overpay - is it due to bad scouting, bad decision making or a bit of both?
We've had this problem since Sir Alex left so I can't put it down only on the managers that have been at the club.

Arrogance = bad scouting and bad decision making. We're an arrogant club who values quick fixes and think our money can buy us success. We would rather overpay for a quick fix than do diligent scouting and planning. It's only natural we half ass the football side, leaving everything to the last second whilst we focus on the next noodle partner.

Yep, bad scouts.

Bad scouts for AWB, Bruno right?

We are not the only ones who think money can buy success. When you buy from the PL, you expect a premium. Just because one player came off for £75m doesnt matter if the other doesnt.

E.g. No one says anything about Keita, but will say we over paid for Fred.

That's true as well and it can also be said about our fanbase as well. Many people throughout the last few years have been raging that we are not spending enough money, whereas my problem always was how we spend it. Just looking at the transfer fees and astronomical wages being wasted on players that are not good enough, it's baffling the extent of the incompetence and arrogance shown by the club higher-ups.

Bruno & AWB is a welcome change. But they have been the exception over the years though. We also paid the same price for Bruno in January than what he was available for in the summer, so that's still poor decision making.

I don't really care about the prices, but i know i would've rather keep Smalling and buy Bruno than overpay for Maguire, let Smalling leave and no Bruno. Also, my opinion hasn't changed since the summer too, i never wanted us to buy Maguire back then either.

Yeah definitely. You will struggle to find a worse return on investment than ours since SAF left. Everyone thought money could buy success in football until we tried it! They didn't realise that Abramovich & the Sheikhs had an actual plan to go with it too though. Over £500m wasted. It's been horrific. Thankfully it seems it's changing a bit with Ole, but it's still not perfect, seen with Bruno & Maguire's respective transfers & Smalling allowed to leave.

Man Utd 3:0 Sheffield Utd
Anyone else noticed how poor his positioning and discipline is. He just seems to go on massive wonders miles out of position Leaving massive gaps. I remember Jose saying Maguire will soon find out about Shaw or something and he’ll need to bail him out but I’m pretty sure Shaw has covered Maguire mistakes more than the other way around.

I wouldn’t say he was that bad today but there was a few times where he seems to go way over in to Lindeloff area leaving this massive gap where he should be.

I think he was good today, but I understand what you mean. I also found his positioning/decision making weird at a few occasions. He sometimes moved out with little chance to win the ball and leaving a hole for the others to cover. It is a very weird decision to make in 1-0 or 2-0 lead.

Is there a defender that makes more fouls in the oppositions penalty area? Feels like there is a foul called against Maguire at every other set piece we have.

The underrating of this guy is incredible. Raul Albiol? Christ.

Norwich 1:2 Man Utd
Great performance. Blocked a certain goal, scored the winner. Unlucky not to have a second goal

Not sure when he lost his armband though

He's great.

Although, I do think he'd be having strips torn out of him for the goal if he hadn't got the winner.

He is a proper captain. A bit slow in the turn, but every player has weaknesses.

This guy plays game in game out and is a proper leader. I love him.

Great game from him. A captains goal to get near the end. Could maybe have blocked the goal we conceded as a negative thing.

Superb footballer who has had a massive impact on our defence
Simple as that really
