I would like to see a run with Jones and Bailly to see if we can press higher and push up more.
They had a brilliant partnership under Mourinho before gettings injuried in the season we ended in second place.

Not going to happen and none of them are in any sort of form at all and after 1-2 games at least one of them will get injuried.

Honestly thought the time to sign him was 2018. Signing him after Mourinho left (who wanted the player) is bizarre. He isn't an improvement on Smalling anyway.

I think it was Jones and Rojo, that's when Caf came up with RoJones.

Jones should be left in dressing room, not on pitch.

He's an OK defender which is not what you're supposed to pay 80 million for. I think he's better than Smalling, but i admit it is a close comparison.

No point now as we've paid the money and he's here to stay. It's what you get for having a club run by people who are clueless about football.

Not convinced Maguire is fit. I'm sorry, you don't tear a hip muscle and maintain mobility. I've had hip issues. You're not running and jumping and twisting and turning if your hip ain't working well. Even if he's packed full of pain killers his muscles simply won't be working properly. I'm not making excuses for him but I'm not going to judge his performances when I know he's got a torn hip.

The hallmark of a good central defender is how calm and un-flustered they seem during a game.

Harry has seemed more and more flustered as the weeks have gone by, and it's showing in his performances.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case.
United and Ole seem willing to put players ,who should ideally have a break, in uncertain situations.
But I guess from Ole's pov it shows a passion for the club or something.

Shocker, caf posters know more about our targets than the club and manager does. Anyone who actually watches the game properly could have told you that he was never a 80m player, not even close. Unfortunately, we’re run by a bunch of amateurs across the board.

He’s not worth £80m but it’s irrelevant. Even if we paid £80 for him, the performances are still bad. I watched him quite a lot at Leicester and he was way better than this. So maybe it’s tactics, or defensive partnership, or whatever. For me he’s playing well below his level and should improve.

I've said this before and got laughed at but I honestly think it's true. Evans kept Maguire good at Leicester and he needs an experienced player beside him. Not saying he is a bad player because he clearly isn't but I don't think he is a leader at the back yet.

He wont be

He wont be

I think he could become that and Ole giving him the captaincy is obviously his attempt at bringing that side of his personality out more because you badly need it. I do think you need to get another centre back though, somebody who is able to ensure everybody else in the back line is doing their job and in the right positions - I'd be looking at bringing in somebody very experienced even if it is only for a couple of years to bring the likes of Maguire on.

In terms of goals conceded were at 29, City 27, Leicester 24, Chelsea 32, Spurs 32.

We're on course to concede around 40, last season was 54. 3rd and 4th place last year conceded 39 each and got 72 and 71 points.

2017/18 season 3rd place 36 goals conceded 77 points, 4th 38 goals 75 points. High 30s-40 is typical for teams in 3rd to 4th. Under Jose's tactics for the first two season it's 28./29

Out goals scored is a huge problem and has been since 2013 under Moyes, LVG and Jose. Even with Rashford in his hot spell we're on course for 56, now he's out probably less. We miss a lot and struggle to create more, we should be scoring more and killing teams off, the clean sheets or the odd one conceded then come, not missing and getting their hopes up.

I do think Smalling should've been given a chance with Maguire and given minutes. A rotation of Maguire Lindelof and Smalling would've been better than hardly playing Jones then trying to rely on him and playing Maguire and Lindelof to death. This is on Ole for telling him he won't feature and he should take a loan.

First and foremost you need to be a good CB and I dont think he is one.
As for being a captain I don’t see it with him and never have

That's not true because Maguire's eye catching season at Leicester was before Evans joined and last season he was under par alongside Evans.

I guess Pepe is criticised the same as Maguire then?
I'm confused. Why do you ask this question in a manner that suggests that Pepe has anything to do with what I said about Kepa?

So for an 80m world record defender.

We will have to:
Give him time to develop
Give him time to exert his influence
Give him an experienced cb to partner him
Give him the armband so that he can unleash his potential
Give him time to adapt to a new club

If we had Smalling and Maguire at CB we'd have a) more pace b) be better in the air.

Incredible stupidity putting faith in Lindelof. He's better on the ball than Smalling but worse at everything else.

What has Lindelof to do with yesterday's game? Last I checked he was injured.

Forgot 80m

He's not better than a defender we give up for free on loan

You can say the same about Maguire

It's the same scenario with Pogba unfortunately. Spent 89m on him then discover we need to play him in specific positions and buy several special players upfront and 2 defensive minded midfielders all to get the best out of him. Same with Maguire now. Spent 80m on him then discovered we had to buy one more defender with specific characters to get him to play well. Crazy.

Not been at his best since we brought him back. Wouldn't be surprised if he's playing through an injury.

His problems exist even without Lindelof around.

CB's are about being good partners. All I know is Lindelof isn't the ideal partner for him and we spent £80m on him so he's going nowhere. Maybe Smalling/Maguire would be better. Personally think it would be. Smalling is quicker than both and good in the air.

Most of his mistakes look more individual ones rather than having to do with his partner for me. Yesterday for example was a pretty poor man marking in the box. Having Maldini next to him wouldn't have saved it. Yes a pacey defender will soften his pace issue but he himself does some very weird marking and individual mistakes you don't expect from an experienced PL defender.

I’m glad some on here think he’s injured too. He’s never been the most mobile but lately he’s looked really off the pace

We can sell pogback for 80ish at least.
Maguire?

Very poor defending for their first yesterday, can only hope he's not fit rather than a bit shit.

He was a disgrace last night. Prior to that, I've found him to be 'okay' which is nowhere near good enough given the outlay on him. I must admit, I'm actually worried about Maguire now; he seems very low on confidenc.

I actually thought he's playing well until they scored. Poor marking and positioning

I said months back that Maguire doesn't possess the quality to perform for a team that can finish any higher than fifth or only if very lucky fourth in the league.

With his signing at most we're solidifying our current position and in all honesty that's the best case scenario.

We're going to be lumbered with him for years to come and regret it for even longer.

It seems to me he's unfit. And yes his form is of the boil but I'm sure he'd look better in a better system and if the team would look bester in general. Mile should haven been let go and him and Maguire would make a good partnership imo. Mike's ability on the ball isn't that disastrous as it's portrayed and Maguire's is ok at best.

Don't think he is as bad as he looks now, there isn't a shred of confidence left in this squad and his looks absolutely shot.
