It's because it's the job of the defence and the keeper to stop the ball entering their net. So even if the defensive midfielder has a fantastic game. He is powerless if the defence and keeper can't do their job. Which is to keep at bay wingers and strikers.
Not much point in having them then is there. Because, as you say, no matter how well they play, it won't make a difference.

It should be pretty obvious that Hargreaves is better from the fact that Capello, SAF, Sven put Hargreaves in the team ahead of Carrick in every big game. After all what do great managers know compared to caftards

If a defender is caught out of position leaving a player through on goal is it not the job of the nearest player, for example Micahel Carrick, to fill in for that player and try to prevent the striker from scoring?

It is their job ot help out in that instance. Do you seriously believe that if Alex Ferguson saw one of his midfielders not contributing defensively he would stand by and allow it to continue saying it's okay, it's not in their job description? It is the job of the nearest player to fill in in that scenario. The same way it was the job of Wayne Rooney and Anderson to defend the Portsmouth counter attack two weeks ago.
It was a good display, but not on the level of the best Anderson/Carrick displays of this season in my opinion.
Not sure how anyone can argue for Hargreaves being better than Carrick this season to be honest. Although i'm not sure what we are debating anymore.

This thread has degenerated into The Chief vs The World in some of mad spackerfest about Hargreaves. The whole point of this thread got lost ages ago.
I happen to think the truth is somewhere in between the opinion of the majority of the contributors to this thread and poor old Rubber-man's mad ramblings. I really do think Hargreaves is United quality but he just hasn't shown it in enough games this season. I definitely think he adds something to the squad we missed from midfield last season (i.e. pace and aggression)
But yeah, Carrick has clearly been better. Much better.
What irritates me, though, is that taking the season as a whole, Hargreaves has been no worse than Anderson. Two or three very good displays and a fair bit of dross. Anderson may just have been that bit better when on form but not a whole not better and never for any longer than 60 minutes. But caftards are falling over themselves to blow smoke up his arse whilst almost all of them are constantly ripping the piss out of Hargreaves.
Obviously, the age thing is a huge factor in favour of Anderson but based on performances alone Carrick > Hargreaves = Anderson. Although you would never guess this from reading about them on the caf.
