Greatest sporting achievement?

This quote got me thinking.

Should be an interesting topic this one. What do you think is the best sporting achievement by a team/person ever in any sport. It could be due to the fact that they were complete underdogs or completly dominated the game or something else.

If you're looking for a triumph of an underdog then John Hilton winning the men's singles at the European Table Tennis Championships is hard to beat.

Steve Redgrave winning gold medals at about 9 consecutive Olympic games.
Boris wining Wimbledon at age 17.
Roger Bannister running a mile really quickly.
Hulk Hogan beating Andre the Giant at Wrestlemania 3.
Peter Crouch getting Abbey Clancy to marry him.

Munster - 12 All Blacks - 0 (1978)

Gerry McLoughlin (Munster): "RTE didn't bother sending any cameras down to film it - they thought it was a waste of time. Nobody gave us a prayer. Some people were afraid for us. They didn't think we belonged on the same pitch."

"One hundred thousand people say they were at Thomond Park that day. Ninety thousand of them are liars. They've been at it for more than twenty-five years. Imagine lying to your grandchildren about a rugby match. I know why they do it though. What happened that day can never happen again."

Stu Wilson (New Zealand): "This match will live with me forever. How couldn't it? It was the one black spot on what was an incredible journey on that tour.

We went away wanting to win every game. We wanted to be the first All Blacks to win a Grand Slam and we wanted to be the new Invincibles.

We got our Slam but we also got a thumping from Munster."

The day Munster shook the rugby world:

Phelps' medal tally is just ridiculous. Definitely a top 5.

 What on earth! That's amazing.

Career record 700–25
Career titles 148

Roger Federer for comparison...

Career record 1058–237
Career titles 88

Absolutely no mention of Cal Ripken Jr? I know baseball isn't exactly the most global of sports...but this was his accomplishment -

He played in 2,632 consecutive games - the previous record was 2,130 games and stood for 56 years. The person in third place only played 1,307 (so Cal more than doubled his streak!!!!)

To put it into perspective - it took him from 1982 to 1998 to compile this record - 162 games a season!

Phil Taylor (darts) won over 200 titles (83 majors) (next best major winner in pdc is MVG with 12)

Record 1575 wins 200 defeats, no player has a wining record vs him

David Rudisha's 10th fastest official 800m time has only been beaten by 4 men and he also has the fastest three times in history. Between 2009 and 2011, he had a winning streak of 34 races in a row, 26 of which were finals.

Michael Dunlop winning his 27th TT this week, overtaking his late uncle Joey, must be among of the ballsiest sporting achievements ever if not outright the greatest.

The TT is unreal, to stay alive for that duration and in that race is a testamont tbh. Just an unreal achievement.

Only just found out that this is the one and only time Real Madrid lost a European cup final. Which is kind of mind blowing. Had to be Fergie in charge, of course.

Was sure I saw some sort of graphic the other day that indicated they'd lost a few. Looked it up and they have.

ECWC - Chelsea 1971

European Cup/CL - Benfica 1962, Inter 1964, Liverpool 1981.

Maybe it was that Aberdeen were the last team to bet them in a European final? That still holds. 11 out of 11 since then.

Actually, yeah, that’s it. They were the last team to beat them. Forty years ago!

Rocky Balboa lasting the incredible fifteen rounds against Apollo Creed. That's surely up there. I Remember watching it and being mind blown, all those years ago.

Michael Schumacher’s 5x consecutive WDC with one manufacturer. Probably unlikely to ever be repeated. If not for some pretty average regulations designed to kill Bridgestone’s dominance over Michelin for 1 year, it likely could have been 7x.

Mark Cavendish with his 35th stage win in the Tour de France. Greatest sprinter ever.

This thread was made before Leicester won the league, but might as well mention them because they definitely deserve it.
