Granit Xhaka

Do not sign, we have Hererra already, what would the point of this be?
Because they are totally different players? Because Xhaka is a defensive type midfielder that we sorely needs when Carrick is out while Herrera is more of an attacking one?

IMHO, he is not ready for the next step and should stay for another season and get CL football. One of his weaknesses for me has been his mental strenghts. There was a time where he believed his own hype and wasnt even a guaranteed starter for Switzerland. He also had a tough time at his current club with some interviews that were very arrogant and stupid. Whilst not playing well, he had to sit on the bench and there were rumours that he should be sold. Maybe that was the lesson he needed but I feel that he should stay put, establish himself as one of the best midfielders in Germany and then move on

While I don't agree that he isn't ready, I think it would be beneficial for him to stay one more season. He's extremely ambitious and he knows that he's talented, it's the sort of arrogance all great players have. His own aspiration wasn't the same as Gladbach's, when he first joined. They thought they were fighting against relegation, while he wanted to play for the European places. The important thing is that he has steadily improved since then and although there were difficulties along the way, he's probably their most important player nowadays.

I disagree. He was rather disrespectful and had the attitude "I'm better than anyone so play me" despite not doing too well. It was surely good for his development to start from the bottom again and it's showing this season. I just fear that the same will happen at the next club so it wouldnt harm to establish himself and continue to work with Favre

Impressive performance yet again vs Werder Bremen.

In terms of statistics :

130+ passes.
90 % completion rate.
4 tackles won.
6 dribbles won.

Not going to lie I havent a clue who he is.

Edit, just looked on whoscored and he seems to be a very good player.

I'm really surprised more people don't remember him from our 2011-12 Champions League matches against Basel. I thought him pretty much bossing that midfield at 19 wasn't that easy to forget. Given our midfield issues back then, I was more interested in him than Shaqiri, who just seems like an typical early bloomer. Haven't watched him much recently, but his development sounds quite promising.

And when he has achieved that then all of Europe would be after his signature. Needless to say, we don't usually win those battles.

While I agree that it would not do him harm to play one more season at Gladbach, its hard to argue that he is not one of the best midfielders in Germany. He is the most influential player at the third best team in Germany. That should speak for itself.

(According to Kicker, his average rating is on level with Xabi. As far as I can see, only one CM player is rated above him.)

I always thought it was 'Shaka'

Anyway, I'd love us to get Xhaka. I think we should get him aswell as Gundogan/Schneiderlin. Midfield options and strength in depth are vital for teams that play the way Van Gaal wants us to play. Besides that, Xhaka is a very exciting talent!

If we don't sign him this year, what are the chances of him still being available next summer?

I think it would be better of his development to stay put for another year, but by then he could be on the radar of all the big clubs.

Tricky

Apparently he already is on Bayern's and Atletico's radar, which in my opinion makes it important that we test Gladbach's resolve not wanting to sell him.

Excellent against City today. Clever, creative and defensively solid. The goal would never have happened without his early work linking play. Slower than Schneiderlin, but much better on the ball and 2 years younger. Not sure we chose right. Xhaka-Schweinsteiger would be truly bossing games for us with the amount of possession we have.

I was just about to write that we should go for him in the summer. I see him as the Carrick/Schweinsteiger replacement, very good playmaker and good defensively too.

I think that with Schneiderlin being meh on the ball we might look for a truly world-class playmaker next to him like Gundogan.

I never thought Schneiderlin was coming here to be a playmaker, he was more of the defensive beast next to a player who can dictate like Carrick and Schweini.

Much the same as his Bayern side with Schweini and Van Bommel.

Gundogan would be exciting i agree, more of a running playmaker which we lack right now, someone who could push forward with the ball and link up.

I'm just not sure LvG wants that, or he just expects his two CM's to hold their positions and distribute from there while letting the front 4 do their thing.

If we're going to have 2 CMs sit, though, play this style of football and still be a team that gets 80+ points a year and breezes through our CL group, we may well need 2 very good passers as those CMs.

If what we're asking our CMs to do is sit deep and hit passes, then Xhaka looks a great fit. I'm just saying that Schneiderlin being involved so little in our buildup play makes me think the other CM will have to take on most of the burden, as Schweinsteiger has done.

I like Xhaka but I'd much rather we address the other weakness spots in the squad before we look at signing him.

That would be annoying if true, I was hoping we would go in for him.

Would be depressing, exactly we we and they need

I'm still not sure if he's great or an unreliable idiot. Would be in theory an excellent fit for Arsenal if he stops getting himself sent off.

Hopefully not true. Then again I still think he's off to City or Munich.

Don't see it happening. Unless he's given up on Wilshere which I doubt Wenger has.

Is he actually good? All I've seen of him are Gfycat posts and stats about how frequently he gets red carded.

Is he actually that great or has improved that much? I know some rate him on here, but i havent watched him in ages. He was highly rated at Basel and in his youth days, but just watched him a few times in the last few years and didnt realy look for him/notice him.

First half of the season, he sabotaged himself and his team with his red cards, but he's in my eyes their most important player. I think he's brilliant and he's getting better in recent months again. Not that he was average during the first part of the season, just not as good as last season and he's returning to that form. He's a natural leader and very ambitious.

I'd love to have a leader in central midfield again, who is prone to being sent off.
