His reaction says more about how toxic the arsenal crowd is than Xhaka himself. I expect he has the dressing room's backing in this.

The idea that footballers shouldn't react because they earn lots of money, to me is backward. I have worked in jobs where I got abuse. I worked in a call centre during my uni days and I got tons of abuse. Even still, it can't be compared to hundreds/thousands of people raining abuse on you, following you online to continue the abuse and threatening your loved ones. It is not comparable.

I agree- he is a human being after all. It might seem justified to the fans but constant abuse can get someone down. They are not superhuman are not immune to what goes on around them.

All this time we have been hearing how the owner should leave Arsenal because he is ruining the club or the manager is useless or they aren’t spending enough etc. I think Arsenal fans should take a deep look at themselves. They have become very toxic.
Again there is a difference between the two, I've worked in a call center as well (though admittedly in Canada
) where I was given some stick by people at times as well. That did effect me but honestly the difference between that and getting called out by fellow players while playing basketball felt vastly different. Playing basketball was something I pride myself on so to hear someone say I'm shit at it would hurt me a lot more than at the call center.Very anecdotal, I agree, but I honestly think we need some perspective when we say they shouldn't complain getting so much money, or that we would gladly take that abuse if we were earning that much. There are very extreme cases of depression in football that people should be aware of before making comments like that. Enke took his own life despite being a hero at Hannover and being the no. 1 heading into the World Cup, his wife said his depression started when he wasn't getting playing time at Barcelona and just continued after that, culminating to suicide when his young daughter passed away. Deisler retired due to depression and injuries, he didn't want to continue playing eventhough Bayern offered to continue his high paying contract. Breno burned his house because of depression after going through injuries and being criticized in the media for his performances. To quote Breno:

We honestly can't take these things lightly and the more we mock it the more footballers will continue to hide it. Fans need to realize it's just a fecking game man.
I feel the media/press are a lot to blame for the hatred towards Xhaka. He does make mistakes but he also contributes a lot. Unfortunately there are impressionable people in the stands whose opinions are based on what outlets like Talksport and what various pundits say. He not overly popular but the hate towards him would be far more measured without external influences.

Those complaining about him telling them to feck off are so precious. They were happy to boo the hell out of him but god forbid he give it back. In light of how pervasive that hard man/machismo bullshit is among football fans it's funny to see how fragile some are.

I'm not so sure. Lacazette has seemed to like a post on Instagram from Troopz, where he is holding both middle fingers up at the camera while telling Xhaka to feck off and never play for the club again. I appreciate it is something on social media and may not be exactly as it is presented, but still does not give a great impression and there may be those in the dressing room that think how he reacted was wrong.

I agree, depression means not happy and unhappy means not happy but my point is just because someone is a public figure or a celebrity, They shouldn't automatically be given a sympathy since their problem is usually not that bad to be honest.
The more sensitive ones always seem to be the fans. Hurl abuse all game but then have a hissy fit when a player responds.
The boos were all over the top. I understand his reaction. But he didn't help himself at all in this situation by leaving the pitch so slowly.

I agree, and I think fans like Troopz, amusing though he can be, almost seem to revel in the toxicity at times. If it's true that Xhaka watches AFTV (as Troopz claims,) then I think that rant is pure toxicity and won't be helpful to the team or player in any way. Xhaka reacted badly, but it's hard not to feel at least a bit of empathy for someone being so publicly scapegoated like that.

Don't blame him for having a go back though he obviously took it too far. I think it's a bit weird that footballers are just expected to eat shit from the fans, even when they've done nothing wrong.

If fans ever treat a player the same way Xhaka has been treated, I wouldn't blame for a reaction one bit. And remember this was the second consecutive time it's happened, this isn't the first time he's been booed off the pitch.
And honestly from the matches I've watched, Xhaka hasn't been nearly that bad. It's just the fans picking one player they want to hate no matter how he performs.

Agree, I'm surprised at the amount of people defending him. Sympathy? Sure, sometimes it's tough to watch a professional lose his composure from getting abused. But he's the captain ffs. Ian Wright on MOTD blasted him and says he should apologize, and so did pretty much every pundit and ex-Arsenal legend. Personally I think match going fans have the right to boo if they dont like what they see. It's not classy but it happens in pretty much every competitive sport, except maybe golf or tennis. A professional should expect that, and it's not like he was geting pelted with coins, it was just a few cheers and jeers.
Also forget Lingard.... a lot of people here actually supported that abusive fan who confronted Pogba at the last match of the season.
