With Nani looking like he is on his way out and Young and Valencia completely pathetic, a young Zaha with a grand total of 0 Premier League games under his belt is surely not enough to bolster our weakest area? (If our midfield had a season like our wings just had we'd be lucky to get a champions league spot).

So who out there is available and would actually work on our wings? In order to effectively play in our system you'd think he'd have to be a classic winger who gets wide and put a cross in rather than looking to come inside.

Bale is obviously top of the list. Anyone else worth a punt? They seem to be a dying breed these days?

The classic winger is dead in modern day football, with the 4-3-3 and the likes becoming common, things like inverted wingers or wing forwards are more in practice these days.

Ben Arfa might be worth a punt for £10 mil. Was quality last season.

James Rodriguez surely one of the hottest properties in Europe right now, though he's hardly a classic winger.

We need a reverse left false winger to play on the right and cut in and out, whilst hugging the touchline in his arms.

Yeah, he is more of a 10 playing out wide right as false winger. But a pretty good talent.

In terms of available options if we can't get muppet dreams like Bale/Ronaldo (who aren't exactly out and out wingers these days either) there is Isco too and Erik Lamela and Draxler maybe?

Then there is Viktor Fischer who looks a talent at Ajax, Cuadrado at Fiorentina and Bruma who is coming up at Sporting. Haven't seen that much of Bruma but Viktor Fischer is impressive and Cuadrado has been pretty good this season.

Other options that might be available for right price are Alexis Sanchez, Angel Di Maria, Tom Ince and Nicolas Gaitan. If we are really desperate then Robben too. :p

Classic wingers are a specie who is in danger of being extinct. Hard to see anyone except Bale and Ronaldo (who still can play as a winger). Alexis Sanchez of Barca can probably do some job there, although he has been playing as wide forward.

Nani is a very good winger. So the fact he hasn't been used as much, suggests SAF thinks we've got enough in that area. I think it would be hard to find better than Nani and so don't think we'll really be looking to do so. I think SAF would rather give the game time to Zaha.

Clearly. As I see it, we really need Eden Hazard or Lucas Moura, no holds barred. Or if they're unavailable, Ashley Young could be a cheaper option.

(Oh, wait, I forgot we have Buttner for that role)

How has the likes of Dmitri Payet, Pablo Piatti and Yarmolenko been this season?

yarmolenko and Gaitan would be the outside bets for new wingers.

I know people don't like him because of his antics but he does seem a class player that we don't have alot of, is comfortable on the wig or the hole

We wont sign anyone on the wings or midfield. Fergie already bought Zaha and Welbeck will be played there. Rooney will become a deep forward / attacking mid. If Fergie buys its another striker.

Doesn't Konoplyanka play on the left too ?

SAF to buy one LB, one CB and Striker. CAF to erupt.

This thread will have a noticeable lack of options compared to the midfield thread. Personally, i only see a marquee signing as progress. Wingers struggling at other clubs will be similar to the building job we currently have on our hands.

Not too long ago we had wingers on both flanks performing with a similar productivity of goals created to what Bale has this season. The platform from the midfield needs to be better, so that the wingers can concentrate on creating without having to worry about mopping up.

Good god no. He makes Nani look like Denis Irwin. Don't want that sort of consistency anywhere near our club. Christ, I don't want Nani's consistency at the club.

If we keep Nani, Bale is off the table. If we get rid of him, we might be making a move for him. Not sure two wingers is enough, especially with none of them playing well.

40million and Nani for Bale

Make it happen Frogie!!!

How has Adam Johnson played this season just out of curiosity?

I always felt he was harshly treated at City. Usually played pretty well when given the chance

I hope we get Isco assuming Bale isn't an option. I'd still rather just keep Nani though.

Having watched Isco, I do think he could play in our system. He stays out wide quite a bit and he links up well with the full-backs. The only issue with him is his pace. If we want to get back to those slick, quick counter attacks, then perhaps we need to keep adding pace to our attack.

He's fecking woeful.

At Sunderland he's been fecking woeful.

He's an over-rated hightlight real player that doesn't work for his team, doesn't contribute but has a flash of brilliance every now and again. There was a reason City didn't play him, and thats the same reason he's being found out at Sunderland.

Di Maria.

I think he's class.

Johnson has been completely woeful this season. When has he hit even ? Had like 2/3 good games.

We already have enough 'average' wingers with the likes of Young and to some extent Valencia. We was headed in the right direction last year bidding for Hazard and Lucas, if we were to sign a winger now id want us to buy somebody with world class potential. We have a big squad it's about time we bought some real class to add to the first 11 (in midfield and wing areas)
