Golf 2021

I obviously motivated Brooks, back to back birdies.

And Rory hit his father on an approach.
Was wondering what you were talking about after seeing him down a birdie

His game is a mess, he's finally decided that he wants to fix his flaws so has got a new coach in but that probably has made things worse in the short-term as they break it down to build it back up again.
True.

I worked the 1997 tournament (Tiger’s first win) as the floor manager in the pro shop behind the fifth green. I fell back asswards into the yearly press corps’ shotgun tournament on Monday. There were many frost delays that week, there was a bad one on Monday AM, so the press tourney start was delayed until 100P. There were many drop outs due to flights, so for pacing issues & to give a perk to a bunch of employees who worked three weeks, they told us to grab our sticks & get to a specific tee. I actually started on this hole. Had to play off the member’s tees, but the course was set up in the same method as every tournament day, the pins were still in the same locations. Got around in 83 with an amazing caddie.

The second time was in 2003 due to a connection from where I worked at the time (played with a scion of the Firestone family who was a member). It was in early May, the course was in member condition, but still amazing, a tad damp, though. I was able to play the Par 3 course twice that day, before & after the round as well as properly warm up, yet gave up keeping score as it was a challenge off of the tips. Probably shot around 88.

That's awesome, kudos on the scores too. I mean, you seem relatively disappointed by them, but I mean without true practice.... I reckon pros scores would be a lot loftier at their first attempt if they didn't get practice days. And that's me assuming you are near or around scratch. It's a dream experience though.

Played to around a 2 during that time, got to a +0.3 as an assistant pro a couple of years later, then it all went tits up.

It’s truly a magical place, Augusta National. To have been a part of it was something else, especially getting to have out with all the African American caddies who were working at the pro shop. To see how much pride they took in Tiger’s victory & to hear their stories was special.

I hate you.

Justin is having one of the all time great rounds here.

Dude’s played the last ten holes in nine under par.

Would have been a threat to break the record were it not for the two bogeys on the front.

Remember him finishing 4th at the Open as a 17 year old amateur. Then fell away for years.

Had a shed load of top.10s and took him a while to win a major but has been very steady for a decade plus and great in the Ryder Cup (him v Mickelson a decade of so ago was superb to watch).

Am I right in remembering he pushed Garcia close a few years ago as well?

Took him to a play off, he was Spieth's closest challenger in 2015 too.

In the week running up to the Masters I always seem to think about Paul Casey as the English guy who likes it at Augusta. Rose seems to fly under the radar despite having such a great record round here.

I'd love to see Rose win this

Rahm, Rory, JT and DJ all over par he won't have many better chances

Finau looking at the hole during short putts.

Really good way to help overcome yips.

Come on Bezuidenhout! Should make the cut at least! Chuffed for the lad

Rory and Pete Cowen are both smart enough to know they don’t have to break down and rebuild Rory’s swing. Cowen is a very technical coach, but he won’t be rebuilding one of the most natural swings in golf.

It might have been the wrong phrase but McIlroy himself noted he'd worsened his swing by trying to get more speed to match Bryson while there is more long needed work on his wedges and short irons (having better control of distance and being more comfortable playing shots without a full swing) which have been poor for a while. My point was that it might get a bit worse before he gets better as they go through that process.

Yeah sorry, I didn’t intend that to come across as condescending as it read when I just re-read it.

Rory obviously needs help and that’s why he’s invited someone new onto his team for the first time in his career and Cowen is a very technical coach. So yeah, there may be a period where things look worse before they get better.

What I meant was that I reckon Cowen will be very much a sounding board for Rory and pointing to little things more than rebuilding Rory’sswing.

Seeing as DeChambeau said Augusta is a par 68 for him can we add even more onto his score please

Rose scuffling some this round.

Bryson is simply an officious twat. Love seeing the exec course humble him.

Rose certainly isn’t fond of the first seven holes at ANGC. Three over after seven today, clawed it back to even. Remains at -7.

Rose is 12 under on the last 11(x2) holes. Bonkers. Although all but 3 of that is from yesterday, just an absurd run of form that was, but great recovery today.

Without a runaway leader, Augusta is always still open going into day 3, as you can always sense a potential 63. Thomas is having a great day, Bryson's hitting the birdies today, and DJ's started well for instance... Spieth keeping steady too.

Course will firm up due to the temperature today & through the weekend. They will also limit watering it as well. We shouldn’t see such receptive conditions in the next two rounds.

Don’t see any chance someone ties the record either day.

Is this true though? It seems an insane thing to do. Rory was already long, but he was also accurate. To try to change your way of playing to compete with one guy would be idiotic. Bryson can’t, and doesn’t win every week. No golfer had ever dominated a tour by being the longest driver.

Many current professional golfers are adopting a Bryson-esque mindset. Keeping up with the Jones & all that. Spieth immediately also springs to mind (distance along with a grip change due to an injury).

There’s also a finite amount of endorsement money out there. Who wouldn’t want to appear to be pushing the envelope for more endorsements?

It’s also a bit of a dick measuring contest. All these guys are alpha mentalities in their sport.

Heard someone ask this on a podcast and I thought it was interesting, if only as a devil's advocate sort of thing: given that it's 6 & 1/2 years since McIlroy's last major, at what point/how much longer before he's not even in the pre-tournament discussion, or does who he is and his relatively good form elsewhere mean he's always going to be talked about? While it's not a perfect comparison, he's in that Federer sort of territory where he's gone so long without one but people still consider him a real contender.

Might all be getting to him that a compatriot in struggle is starting to have a Renaissance in Spieth.

He just hit a rocket half shank on 10. Tough stance, but I’ve never seen a second shot that far right.

Painful watching McIlroy at the minute 8 over par and not looking like he’ll make the cut, as for the guys question I think he is already slipping out of the talking for a major but am sure that will change in a year at the most when his game comes back again, he’s too good a player to never regain form again.

Such an unfortunate penalty on Ancer, totally opposite the Reed debacle.

He had no idea he pressed down on that little mound of sand, no way he could have felt it. Hardly any chance he saw the indentation before impact either.

6 and a half years since he won a major but was world number 1 14 months ago and was in incredible form. He hit a slump since lockdown but is always in the conversation regarding majors because on his day he’s the best or at least one of the best players in the world.

Now, what he’s done to his swing chasing distance (which was mental considering he was the best driver on tour) is worrying. If he plays for a couple of years like he has in the last 6 months, then you’ll find him discussed less and less on the weeks of majors. However, I don’t see his current form lasting too long.

A bit silly for him to have thought he would make the cut, let alone contend. Admire his willpower, but wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t play again until the PGA.

TV doesn’t do that course’s elevation change enough justice. Holes like 2, 6, 10, 11, 15, & 18 are challenging walks even for the fittest pros out there.

With DJ not even making the cut  I’m changing my pick to Bryson (24/1) good price at -1 so if anyone can make up the difference it’ll be him, not that I like him much mind.

Fitzpatrick still in there at even par but was hoping for a better showing from him can’t see him make up the difference but solid golf from the young lad, will still be rooting for him as am not bothered with most of the others.
