Good defender, would rather us go all in for Varane though.

He rather recently signed a 5 year deal, I highly doubt he'll be up for a move. If he is, Mourinho will move mountains to get him.
I'd really want Godin. He's an excellent defender. If we are signing a CB, it really should be him.

Varane isn't a realistic target IMO. No way Real would let him go, and he wouldn't push for a move himself either.

I've never been impressed with Varane. I know he is thought of as the next big thing but I have never been impressed with his performances when I have seen him play. Its also difficult to judge the defensive work when Real go out and dominate other teams so much.

He had a very good first year with Madrid. Fergie was quite right to have pursued him when he did.

He might not want to move, at least in January, but it would be worth making him a big offer to test him I think as our CB injury plague is showing no signs of easing up.

Haven't seen much of him, but from what I hear, he would suit us. At 28 (nearly 29), he'd probably be able to three top years, although I do think his buy out clause is too much for someone his age. Having said that, we need a world class, consistent defender, and if this guy fits the bill, I guess he'd be worth it.

£28m definitely is not a "steal" but he's to kind of player we should be looking for. Strong in the air and a vocal leader. Not sure about his ability on the ball but he can't be any worse than a rusty Smalling or nervous Evans.

Not sure how credible the link is but if he's available, I would think LvG would make an attempt. He himself isn't scheduled to stay more than 3 years at the moment so it would make sense to buy an experienced player who could take us to the next level in the coming year.

Would be a fantastic signing, £28 million is an awful lot of money for a soon to be 29yo.

£28million is a steal if we end up winning the title within the next few years.

If at the very least it guarantees us a top 4 finish every season then its still money well spent. And let's be honest, we're desperate at the back.

Bang on.

RVP :)

At the end of the day if he can bring stability to this utter clusterfeck of a defence it's money well spent.
RVP was Premiership proven, don't get me wrong I would still take Godin, it's not my money at the end of the day.

It's not ideal with his age and the price but there really aren't that many obvious options unless Dortmund start letting people go. We desperately need a centre back so I'd go for it.

todays market prices
+
shortage of CBs generally
+
our shambles of a defence at present
=
no brainer

Clubs regularly pay big fees for players with huge potential that might become top class over the next few years, so I don't see a big difference in paying a big fee for an already top class player that we could get a few good years from.
