Glory hunters

I have lived in Australia for the past twenty years so have not seen United in that time. I accept that I am not as loyal as those that go to games.
When I left school in 1973 I thought it was impossible that I would leave England because united were so important. I went home and away that season even though we got relegated. The following year I also went home and away despite playing in the old second division and continued for a few years. The only success was 1977 Cup Final (stopped Scousers getting the treble!) I am not saying this because I am wonderful. Far from it - United were the best supported team at the time and have been ever since regardless of results. i think the only times we didn't top the attendances were when the ground was being developed.
My point is - when people see my in a United I am labelled a glory hunter because United are successful at the moment. Arsenal are now possibly the second most popular side Australia. I see many more Arsenal fans now than I did five years ago. Why are they immune from the glory hunting tag? Liverpool used to be clear as the second most popular side in Australia. Most of them started supporting during the seventies and eighties but they are not glory hunters?
Why does this term only apply to us?

Good point.

I was in a pub in Dublin once and it was the year after we won the first championship after 26 years. Some arsehole was giving it loads to a six year old who could only love united because that is the way it is.

He had a longballpool shirt on and was such a scumbag.

I often wonder who still supports their team. I bet it is that six year old child. There is nothing plastic about having a united addiction. It starts young and you just cant get rid.

No that United have won nothing this season, nobody should be labeled a glory hunter. We are now supporting an "also ran club" according to Scouse logic. Glory Glory Man United.

If Arse dominate the league for some years to come, build a new ground and fill it every week, their supporters will too get that GH label

It's called jealousy at the end of the day

Not that it will happen ;) <img src="graemlins/devil.gif" border="0" alt="[Devil]" />

Anyway...i live in Malaysia...where there aren't many EPL league matches shown here during the 80's and early 90's. It's only during the mid 90's that the EPL scene here hotted up.
I started supporting United in 92...btw i was 12 then. I didnt play much footie just got interested as a spectator. I used to watch with my dad before that and he was mainly the influence on my interest in football...that time we get mostly Liverpool matches over here...but that time i didnt support any team.(Dunno why...i wasnt even reaching puberty yet...probably didnt bother). Then came a day when i saw United play...forgot which match but they stuck on my mind for some reason ( possibly because they looked good..?) hence decided to support them to this day...well...does that make me a Glory Hunter...cos i decided to support them BEFORE i checked them out and knew they were successful and all that. <img src="graemlins/nervous.gif" border="0" alt="[Nervous]" />

The thing is that if you have started supporting Utd from the age of 4 or 6 no one can call you a glory hunter,
I personally take no offence when ppl call me a sunshine boy, fuch em, ive supported Utd since i was 4 yrs old.

Actually i have :p I was present @ one of Man Utd's finest hours :D

When did you start supporting Liverpool btw? Was it in the 80's when they were the glory team and the bandwagon was going strong?
Why dont you support your local team?

My local team play in Div in one of Irelands regional leagues so i never really went out & bought the shirt. You should support Cardiff, shame on you.

I told you ive allready been to a Utd match.
I witnessed
Paul Ince playing his first ever decent match for Utd.
Dion Dublin making his first team debut.
A Clayton Blackmore special from 30 yards.
Ryan Giggs on full flow.
Bryan Robson dictating a midfield and lifting one of the finest trophys that exist in football,

yes Davo you guessed it,
It was the "Penneys challenge cup final"

When did you start supporting Pool btw? I started supporting Utd when i was 4, Utf played magiv football. My Da has allways been an ABU and tried to "scouse" me but despite all the trophys their football didnt do it for me.

I clearly have misread you...I wasn't aware that you were such a regular match goer..apologies.. ;)

When I was 5, about 79ish

Murt. Don't waste your breath.

Everyone knows that United were the best supported team in Britain after they were relegated.

But it's conveniently forgotten by those who jump on to the "United fans are gloryhunters" bandwagon.

You do have more than your fair share of gloryfans tho don't you?

There are obviously circumstances etc etc but this is still fair comment

I have never claimed to be a regular match goer,
I had sprogs young and emigrated from Ireland when i was 20, day tripping to Old Trafford has been way off the agenda.
Now that im finally finishing in Uni its starting to look good, im planning on treating the young fella to a day trip in a yr or two.
When i move back to Ireland it'll be easier too,
You have no sprogs and you live a car drive from Unfilled, and its hardly hard to get tickets when the place is half empty, how come your not a season ticket holder?

Maybe you have a nice big wall @ home which you paint every week and watch it dry for 90 minutes with a 15 minute piss break ;)
Why did you start supporting Pool in 79 btw? was it all the silverware

Of course it is. That's because we've had more than our fair share of success. Liverpool achieved the same level during the 80s. That's why there are Cockney scousers etc. in the same way as there are Cockney reds. And scousers in Australia.

It goes with success.

What isn't fair comment is that the minute you say you're a United fan, some moron will call you a gloryhunter.

Why don't you follow a welsh team?

Oh I see, glory-hunting is in your blood

I dunno really...I won't deny that the fact that Liverpool were successful and therefore received a fair deal of coverage had an affect..

Its a different game tho now ain't it. You're clearly going to have more gloryhunters than we had due to mass coverage etc

I'm not having a go but it does strike me as a bit weird that you've never been to OT considering the fact that you cite yourself as decent fan - make the effort you lazy gloryhunter... ;)

I dont see why it bothers ppl, i started suporting utd in 1980 and if anyone are glory fans its all the Liverpool fans who are older than 15 who wernt born and bread in stanley park.

Does it bother people tho?

Its used as a wind up by non Man Utd fans and seems to work..

The worst are certain local fans of the your own club

Must be

Unlike yourself who opted for the famous Man Utd because you were born in a different continent..

;)

imo you can be a glory hunter even if the team you support isn't successful in terms of trophies because success is relative. For example your local club is in the third division and you choose to support a prem club, this is still glory hunting.
I can never get my head round why people dont support their local club though.

If i cite meself as a decent its because ive been a loyal fan for as long as possible,
Its not down to laziness, just that circumstances have made it literally impossible,
but its only a matter of time

and your the glory hunter btw, did you look at the top of the table and choose who ever was their ;)
I tried that once with the scottish league, 6 yrs old i got the paper and rangers were on top, i proudly went and told me Da that im a Rangers fan.
The Celtic shirt arrived within a week ;)

Its been impossible to ever go to OT? on one occasion?

Really?

Its a big fuss about nothing the gloryfan debate..

If you stick with one club through thick and thin from a young age who cares? Kids are always going to be influenced by success, coverage etc..

I'll still laugh tho when the camera pans around OT and centres on a huge group of chinese fans complete with cameras and Megastore bags..

;)

Surely the true sign of a Glory hunting fan is one that switches their support to the successful team of the moment.

If Davo for example started following LFC when they were successful and still did through the barren years he is not a glory hunter.

I am pleased that his faithfulness is paying off.

MU will always have more gloryhunters than anyone else as their name reaches more people who will never have the chance to visit OT in all corners of the world.

As a sprog my father was (and still is) a die hard ABU so he was never going to approve of me going there.
From when i got older from 16 or so i was allways too broke, i started Uni in Ireland @ 17 and had an income of £40 quid plus the bus fare.
20 i left Ireland, had a sprog, learned a new language, juggled counteless jobs and courses,
Any time or money i have had spare has went to going home for a few weeks in the summer. So i has in all honesty been next to impossible.
But im just about to finish Uni and then have a 40 hr week for the fist time ever. Then ill have a chance.

Ill agree with you that the glory fan debate means nothing to me, if youve supported a team since childhood no one can say anything to you.

That there are often large groups of chinese fans to be seen at big Man Utd matches - with camera's and megastore bags..

I've no problem with this, it simply conforms to the Man Utd fan stereotype and is amusing..

Well if your talking about Chinese from mainland china there is some truth but even then its not all of them...those who live in the cities like Beijing are different...And there are Chinese everywhere in the world...England, Ireland, Canada, the States, Down under, Malaysia included that are pretty much like you and Davo...so the camera and bags dont work unless it works for you guys as well
I'm an ethnic Chinese Malaysian citizen if your wondering.

Just the same old thing. We get fans from the Far East and it's all about sterotypes etc.

I'm not talking about the background of it etc

Its simply amusing as it conforms to a stereotype...just as I'm sure you'd find it funny if you saw a group of permed blokes with moustaches at a Liverpool game..

Well sensitivity on my part
I mistook your comments Davo

No not really, but the exchange rate make it difficult. Previously when I went over there the exchange rate was 1=3.5 now it's 1=6.5

Are you sure they are Chinese and not Japanese?
