VAR - Love or Hate?

They should just put monkeys in the VAR room who click agree with referee on every decision. Such a half hearted and stupid implementation.

100% this.
At the moment, VAR is showing refs up to be biased and blind to the obvious.
What are the video refs seeing that the rest of us aren’t?
Are they wearing ref tinted spectacles?
These decisions are negatively affecting the honest outcome of a fair fight.

I mainly watch la liga games and think VAR works very well, there. The odd slow descison but 99.9% it's great.

I genuinely believe it's not even mainly being used to get correct descisions in the premier league though. That is the only rational explanation.

It's like WWE?

It's always seemed to work perfectly fine in other leagues. It's only in English football the application of it seems to be abysmal.

Zaha shoved two hands into De Bruyne, running across where the ball was going, just took him out. I knew the second Anthony Taylor didn't give it, that VAR wouldn't give it either. They won't go against their mates, VAR is just a fancy offside detector. Nothing more.

The VAR officials should be recently retired refs the current lot have decided never to overrule each other, Mike Riley needs sacking

I’m not a fan. Never wanted it. I want football to be judged there and then at human level, right or wrong. Sometimes the human error makes the great talking points which is a part of why football is so great. Illogical as it may sound as you should want it to be as fair as possible but that’s just my feeling on it.

The worst case for me this season was the penalty Liverpool conceded against Napoli. The replays showed that it was a dive but as there was contact made after the dive then it can’t be deemed as a clear and obvious error from the ref. So the dive was therefore irrelevant. Utterly ridiculous. I know you can say “feck the scousers” and think it’s hilarious but one day that will be a big decision against us and it makes it ten times worse than the ref being conned by a dive.

what’s odd is that we still have the controversial talking points of wrongly allowed goals and decisions even with the VAR in place. Which makes it worse as I understood it when it was a ref making a split second call but just makes it a farce when the technology isn’t getting it right. Throw in the goals disallowed because someone’s toe is offside and I’m afraid it justifies me resenting it more than I thought I would.

If you consider the "foul" that VAR disallowed Villa's goal for... It makes it even more baffling how it doesn't give penalties for even more blatant fouls.

They must not be showing us some of the angles. The only other options are stupidity or corruption.

Wow just seen the incidents today..utter rubbish once again.

Evans didn’t get fouled at all for Leicester.

That Villa disallowed one was very dubious too and If they hadn’t won I think much more would be made of it

VAR will always be inconsistent as it’ll be different refs reviewing incidents

And especially since it obviously applies a different standard for defensive fouls and offensive ones. I mean, letting the Alderweireld and Zaha tackles go unpunished while punishing the tiiiiiiniest of touches on Evans when the referee has let all three instances go just shows a massive difference in standards as far as defending/attacking teams go.

Its completely fecked up. Use it like in the rest of Europe or dont use it at all.
At this moment I almost dont even care which option of those two even if I think most arguments favor VAR.
But then use it full stop.
Whats happening now is so stupid. It makes things worse for the referees who where supposed to be helped by the system.

It would depend on what the ref saw, I would suspect Moss didn’t see any contact on Evens, which there clearly was, so an obvious mistake is corrected as for the pens, the VAR officials need to grow some balls

Haha that Watford one was a stone wall pen.

And the Wolves one being disallowed is just so so petty. For someone being 1/2mm offside in the buildup when no one even had any hint there was anything wrong with it. Proof that you can’t celebrate any goal nowadays incase of that situation

I said it a couple of months ago and it's only been strengthened since then but it's clearly a case of sabotage by the Premier League as well as a blatant pal's act between the refs. I watch lots of European football and not once have I ever seen this much nonsense with VAR. The sooner the players, coaches, fans and even the media start calling it what it is the better.

That "clear and obvious" rule is the biggest piece of sh*t I've ever heard in my life.

The way I see it, the FA will need around 3 seasons to realise the referees are boycotting the big brother? It's pretty obvious, why aren't teams against the officials on this?

It's exactly the same as the ex-refs they wheel out on BT Sport for "analysis" of key decisions. I've never once heard them say a fecking thing other than "my mate on the pitch is right", no matter how obviously he's fecked it up.

Not a spine between them.

Yeah, I thought that was a penalty. And more or less exactly what VAR should be overturning. It's a pretty poor decision from Taylor that's being supported really?

Everything is subjective except where they can draw lines that might be wrong anyway.

Having said that, someone will say KDB decision isn't stonewall - where I don't suppose it is quite 100 % either - but in the spirit of the game, KDB should get to the ball unimpeded, which he doesn't, so it's a pen for me.

Similar, the Burnley goal is correctly disallowed, but you've got Sean Dyche spinning it differently. So what's the point? You might as well just let the ref cock it up.

The ''overall'' apart from offsides is not any different but there is a load of faffing about & even more bullshit.

Just seen the Tottenham/Watford pen decision.

that is an absolute stone wall pen on Deulofeu, how can they not give that? These refs are an absolute joke. Make their minds up how they feel like it rather than sticking to the rules, pathetic.

the Alli one he clearly knocks on with his arm also, that shouldn’t be given either. Madness.

If used correctly it will work. Unfortunately the referees are more interested in protecting themselves rather than admitting mistakes happen.

The only reason it should be used is to get the right decision in the end and that isn’t happening.

Despite often slagging them off, I used to have a begrudging respect for most refs... As the job is hard and the calls they have to make are often difficult.

This VAR has managed to ruin that though... Now they're just arrogant twats.

They were arrogant twats all along, we just couldn't know for sure. Now we do.
Is there a way FIFA/UEFA could just come in and impose generic guidelines on the VAR use to everyone ? How come every country does whatever they want ?

Thanks the lord for VAR. To be fair, I think that our goal should have been revoked too, and Liverpool's one definitely was the right call.

To be honest I genuinely didn't see a massive contact on Origi...

I agree, would have been pathetic to disallow u tied goal because such a minimal contact. Not all contact is a foul ffs.

I hated that wait

The Liverpool handball was clear-cut.

Regarding our goal, under a better VAR system the ref would have been invited to take a look at it again himself and make his own mind up. Under the PL's system it was always very unlikely to be overruled though.

Why was it not used when Henderson smashed one of our players in the face? I thought that was the point of VAR , so players can’t get away with shit like that. One day we will have a game what is refereed correctly but until then it hasn’t been used totally horrendous today. At least when they’ve gone to it they’ve used it well.

Honest question, how far back can VAR go? You can get a foul not given a minute before but if playing against City you won't see the ball again. They then score. Can VAR be used for that?

Very pleased with it today but that of course is totally biased. It has been nothing short of terrible all season. Really should suspend it until people know what they’re doing with it.

posters on here so fickle. Both were goals, if you’re splitting hairs for the handball how do you ignore Lindelof use of hands on body?
