German Football 20/21

The moment Mönchengladbach pay more attention to Sancho, boom, there's more space for Reus and Brandt.

Half time can't come soon enough for them. They need to go with a diamond shape to congest that midfield and counter with Hoffmann and Pléa.

It's strange because it shouldn't have taken long to figure out which Gladbach player actually scored the goal, and he's the one quite clearly being onside.
The only thing I could imagine is that maybe they were checking too whether the other player was interfering with play or not?
Yeah maybe, although it took me a few takes to make sure
Haaland is ruthless.

Dortmund are looking more confident going forward, whilst Mönchengladbach are the exact opposite. They're more tentative in their pressing and are giving the Dortmund players enough time and space to build up their attacks. Sancho is at the centre of most Dortmund attacks at the moment, and why not? Mönchengladbach are unable to contain him. No one's able to get close to him, and him roaming from one side to another in his free role is a huge issue.
He's also a very intelligent player. So natural. Watching Cavani the other night and watching this kid is a joy. They're always moving about into positions that defenders hate. You don'tknow where they are until it's too late

So Mönchengladbach are playing a flat 4-4-2 at the moment, which is making their situation worse. The midfield is giving up more space, and they're stuck in this in-between, no-man's-land situation where they aren't really pressing but also aren't compact. Zakaria on the right side of the midfield is barely doing a thing.

M'Gladbach are playing 352 and Zakaria is playing in the centre of a back three.

That's how they started, but after going 2-1 down, they changed their shape to a more conventional 4-4-2 to cover the gaps in between the full and centre backs whilst plugging the gaps with Neuhaus and Kramer. It hasn't worked out that well, though, as Mönchengladbach struggled to play out of the back for the most part.

This is BMG just after going down 2-1:

Pléa's off screen on the right side of the image as the highest player for Mönchengladbach.

I wonder how many matches Burki will continue to cost Dortmund until they realise he isn't good enough.

That's where I've seen him play a number of times. Doesn't look as comfortable as when he's DM but I'm not arguing with Rose

Haha good decision. He's a scary guy.

Oh, right. Cant say I noticed. Fair enough.

Mönchengladbach are looking much better now. They're more compact in the midfield and aren't as stretched as they were in the first half. That diamond/4-2-2-2 shape is helping them big time.

Absolutely amazing revovery run by Bellingham. That was actually a tackle
So young but already ready to take on so much responsibilty, such a great young player.

Roman Burkis ability to make decent shots look unstoppable is truly world class
That was a difficult situation though. You can't anticipate much, since the ball is going past half a dozen player and might deflect off of any of them; but once the ball's past all of them, it's too late to respond given the speed of the ball. Bürki did the second which is why he ended up not diving at all, but go any earlier and you end up looking like an idiot if the ball comes off Gladbach's #8's butt straight into where Bürki was standing.

Two teams who are great at attacking, but awful at defending.
City will have a field day against this Gladbach back line.

Dortmund have struggled to break down Mönchengladbach in the 2nd half ever since they made their 4-4-2 more compact and tight. Whilst Mönchengladbach themselves have struggled to build up attacks, at least they're not giving any space to Dortmund. The long switches from one flank to another are helping them, but they need someone who can take on the opposition and drag them out of their shape via a dribble.

It's in these situations where they miss someone like Hakimi or Witsel, someone who can either make those consistent runs beyond the defensive line or someone who can not only play consistent, defence-piercing passes but also enter the box as an added threat.

Yup, game over. Dortmund haven't been able to do much in the final third, and that goal will surely have killed off the game.

Rose's adjustments have shifted the balance of the game.

Isn't it about time Dortmund appointed a proper manager..........? ;)

Thuram Jr.
4-2

So three Dortmund players seem to try to set up a block for the four Gladbach players (just to the right of spot in the overhead shot), but somehow Thuram manages to walk right through the middle of them without help from team mates screening off Dortmund players. I guess Dortmund have some practising to do on how to set up blocks like that in these situations - or just do something else entirely. Cause once Thuram is through the block, obviously he's gonna have a free header if the ball comes to him.

Will be Gladbach's first win over Dortmund since 6 years. They lost their last 11 matches.
