Who cares what Farron feels about gays

People who care about LGBT issues?

Farron's voting record on the matter is fine but his skirting around the issue isn't a particularly good vote winner for a liberal who's naturally going to want to appeal to liberals, most of whom will be quite pro-LGBT.

Not sure he's ever been asked. You got any political journalist friends who are leaving their job in the near future?

He's been asked if homosexual sex is a sin a fair few times and hasn't been able to answer, though. Quite a lot of people in the CofE think being gay is fine, providing you are abstinent.
Balls, virtually all my ex-colleagues/contacts on the nationals are business journos. It's always about the actual act of sex with gaybashers. It's most odd.

She could just be running on a platform of improving security for horses.

Actually you're right I made a mistake the full slogan is apparently:

'Strong Stable Leadership in the national Interest'

I think yours is the only context in which it makes sense but that's quite a niche slogan.

It is strange given the hullabaloo of Brexit and the nashing of teeth that followed the result, that people would still rather vote for the party that made it possible and who refuse to slow down as we approach this apocalyptic chaos, than choose an alternative party that pethaps doesn't want to starve poor children.
To me its beyond comprehension. Last sentence is ott tbh

What do you expect them to say exactly?

Kodos: It's true, we are aliens. But what are you going to do about it? It's a two-party system. You have to vote for one of us.
Man 1: He's right, this is a two-party system.
Man 2: Well I believe I'll vote for a third-party candidate.
Kang: Go ahead, throw your vote away.

Has the advantage of being more catchy than the one they did choose as well.

At least it is refreshing that they appear to be introducing German capitalisation.

Only until the half way point and then they got bored of the title case and phoned it in (like literally I'm on my phone and I couldn't be arsed).

Perhaps if they don't believe in freedom of religion then they aren't really Liberals and should stick with Labour?

I'm sure when Farron gets sent to the Gulag they will be delighted.

Believe it or not, there is a difference between being critical of Farron's statements on homosexuality and thinking he is deserving of slavery.

Can we not criticise people when we think they get things wrong? I slated Ed Miliband over his rhetoric on immigration but I was still desperate for him to be PM.

A politician cannot hold views and then declare those views out of reach of scrutiny or else people are being intolerant. It isn't intolerant to oppose what someone thinks.

It's not about imposing views on someone or freedom of religion, it's about liberals expecting their candidates to be pro-LGBT in the modern day world, something even a lot of conservatives are fairly supportive of now. Farron's entitled to hold his own views but anyone who's scientifically minded is naturally going to be sceptical of a religious candidate, even if it's something Farron keeps to himself. It also matters partly from a practical viewpoint...if other parties successfully paint Farron as anti-LGBT it'll hurt him in the run-up to the election.

I am also critical of his views of homosexuality. I also would have no problem voting for him on the basis that this doesn't translate into his voting record.

People are saying that he isn't Liberal because he holds homophobic beliefs, but Liberalism is at it's core the world view that individuals are responsible for themselves and that the state shouldn't impose the majority view upon the individual. It is therefore an unfair criticism.

Ideological purity is not a liberal idea. It is more in line with socialism/communism, hence the tongue in cheek gulag comment.

I agree in principle with playing the ball and not the man but it's difficult in practice to separate the politician from his views even if they don't translate into discriminatory policies.

We need a "best quotes of the thread" competition, because that cracked me up

He probably just had a bad drunken gay experience.

As a known political nerd, I'm currently doing quite a bit of 'breaking the bad news' to politically minded but not politically obsessive friends who care deeply about issues but don't follow the polls. There really is no good way to say 'there is no hope'.

Is this a thing ya'll are doing, or do I just have an odd group of friends?

Let's try that again!

feck James Corbyn!

28 year old labourer from a town just outside of Liverpool.

We've not had the manifestos yet. Would May scrap the overseas aid minimum? Weird to think that would win her loads of votes.
