Gary Neville's last season - "I was embarrassed every day"

Fellaini is not on 300k per week nor has he held the club to ransom, hes still useful to have around which is a lot more than can be said for Mr Rooney.

Rooney isn't the great player he once was, hell he's maybe not even a good player anymore. But lets be honest he's still more useful than Fellaini, more than double the goals and ten times the number of assists compared to Fellaini from less appearances this season.

The situations Fellaini is useful in is very, very limited.

The title is a little unfair on Gary. I think he said that he was embarrassed when he was coming in and just training for those three weeks before he retired. He obviously was meant to be a positive influence around the players but felt embarrassed that he couldn't contribute in the place it most mattered. On the pitch. He retired. The end. Not sure he was talking about the season, and I'm not sure what he did wrong.

Great pro who lived the ultimate fan's dream.

Towards the end of his career he convinced Scholes out of retirement and Neville to continue playing despite both deciding on finishing their careers, Neville had to tell Fergie he was done before he believed it. Fergie became incredibly reliant on the old guard towards the end, its not just about loyalty but familiarity. The man was on his seventies, it's not surprising.

Don't agree with your slant on it Ivaldo. This is the same guy who had basically binned Rooney the same season after all the service he had given. He was right to tempt Scholes and we should have wrapped up that league that season. He got the most out of the players he had at his disposal a bit like Jose with Blind Darmain and Rojo just now.

Rooney wasn't part of his old guard. He would've played them until they fell apart. He became cautious in his old age and relied heavily on what had served him so well throughout his career.

I never realised that SAF was so tall.

Rooney is not part of the class of 92 but he is very much part of the old guard.

You think Fergie viewed Rooney the same as Scholes, Neville and Giggs?

Don't just forward this to Rooney, Fellaini, etc. Just forward this to every players in the club so they know once their performance dropped; it doesn't matter what they had done for the club or what the board and manager say, they should just retire/leave thr club.

I think Fergie knew Rooney was an integral part of his team for the last 7-8 year and at that time was more valuable than any the named guys. But Fergie was ruthless and if he thought you offered nothing then you were gone.

Convincing Scholes out of retirement was a good decision. He was still a great player and it gave the whole club a lift when it was announced. Our performances improved with his return. Not quite enough to win the league that season, but he did help us to the title the following season.

I think Sir Alex may well have known Gaz was finished, certainly after West Brom, but wanted him to stay on for other reasons... his leadership, influence on the younger players and personality around the club. It would explain why he asked him to delay announcing his retirement and continue coming in even though he clearly wasn't going to play.

Remember watching those games with Dad and we talked about Neville. It was clear he was a spent force, and he was keeping a better player out of the team. Kind of shows how, towards the end of his managerial career Fergie become over reliant on his old core of players. I can't imagine Fergie wouldve had much job the seasons after he retired either.
Agreed. I knew he was done I think SAF was the only person who didn't want to see it. Maybe his Dad from what we heard on the interview.

He continued playing him. Neville basically had to remove himself from the picture.

Gary Neville's reading of the game and his understanding of tactics is impressive. He needs to get off his ass and go back into management. He needs to shake off what happened in Valencia, he was at the wrong place at the wrong time and never given enough of a chance. He could yet become a very good manager. I am surprised that Jose hasn't offered him a role at United. Nicky Butt is part of the set up, and a job was offered to Giggs, I believe Neville is the best out of the lot.

He really should give coaching another go, he has tremendous potential.
