Gary Neville's last season - "I was embarrassed every day"

Great interview. I remember his last season, he was a shambles. I remember when he first broke in to the team and he was an absolutely incredible RB in his prime so it was really quite sad to see him in that last year. That said, I still remember being really shocked when he announced his retirement in the middle of the season. I've got a lot of respect for him for knowing when to call it a day.

Which is why very few do that. I mean, no one retired in the middle of the season once realising they are no longer good enough.

Gary Neville did.

But Rooney isnt finished, despite people apparently wanting to think he is. Good enough to be starting/getting so many games for us anymore? No, but he has a few years left in him if he looks after himself but he has to drop down to a smaller club if he wants to get any significant game time.

Edit. Totally wrong thread...

He'd had injuries for years before that last ill advised season.

But most players would have stubborn carried on, or had an appalling spell elsewhere, just to eek the final money out.

I wonder if Nev considered a final pay day in America. It's commendable that he stepped down when he did, I think many would have prolonged it.

As he says though, how nice is it to know that you retired at the right time. No second thoughts, no doubts about whether you made the right decision. He knew he was done.

It was there for everyone to see at the end, really.

Great servant, as they say - but in his case it seems an appropriate term. A player who went beyond what you’d think was his natural limits, which is rare and much to be appreciated. Any team can use a player like him - and we certainly could these days.

"at half-time I sat the toilet on my own thinking ‘I want this to end’."

I'd like to think most people sit on the toilet on their own.

Will never forget the WBA game, he was a shambles. How we won that game remains a mystery.
  I genuinely think about that game as the biggest mugging ever. They missed a penalty on top of that stone waller being denied.

Some of Darmian's performances over last two years were worse than his and he is still playing.

Great watch! I watched this earlier from the other thread. Definitely a must watch.

It's actually amazing how long of a career he had, playing at the intensity level he played at. His legs must have been done by then. He gave his all every time he plays!

What an absolute fecking legend. Players like Gary and Paddy are my favourites, ones that really get, and bleed for the club.

I remember the mecheda game well. Neville should have been sent off and Ashley Young looked like Messi skinning him all game.

What makes it an obsession? Do you we not have a player in a similar state? Wayne Rooney's name can't be mentioned without it being called an obsession

Now you are reading Rooney's mind? How about the fact that it never crossed his mind that he is declining? All he might think is that he is still a great player in a different way. It's up to the people who watch and manage him to make that call. I think what makes great players great is the fact that they never lose faith in themselves. Even if they turn absolute garbage, in their mind they still think they are doing well.

I remember that west brom game . The caf went mental. just goes to show how these match day threads can get nasty even to legends like Gary. He did the right thing in the end. Massive respect to him.

Comparing Rooney to Gary Neville is quite ridiculous. Rooney has been poor but he's still a Premier League level player, capable of assists and goals and occassionally influencing a game (the FA cup final springs to mind). He just isnt the player he was. Gary Neville's injures finished him to the point where he wasnt up to the pace of the game and his timing was absolutely shot. It was a shame to see him that way.

The sad thing is he was probably playing his best ever football when the injury occured.

Aye, he was amazing that season. His crosses had become Becks-esque, no idea how that happened.

This is not a Wayne Rooney thread but any player in his position that thinks that they are still great must be absolutely delusional and needs their head checking. No player is that blind not see that it is a decline and not a dip in form. Neville recognised that did the right thing. Respect to the guy.

And maybe we would have won the league in 2012 with a better midfield. And maybe we'd have done better in the Champions League.

I'm sure Fergie would agree you should always look to improve and be the best. We did very well, but could have done better.
Our return in those years domestically and in Europe was only bettered by Barcelona, maybe the greatest side of all time. I really can't see how any change in strategy would have put us ahead of the once in a lifetime monster they were back then.

I have and will always have the utmost respect for Gary Neville. He is probably the most dedicated Utd player ever. I have so many great memories of him showing his passion for Utd.

Did he returned his salary back?

Ah man I miss Fergie.
The 70s and 80s were so rough, even for us in the Caribbean, the Liverpool supporters gave us so much stick. Thank God for Fergie and thank God for Gary Neville for his passion and his utter joy whenever we bested pool. Its like he represented all of us long time sufferers.

Did he returned his salary back?

Did he steal your chocolate or something? Your posts about Neville bros or any of our previous youngsters are just tedious to read and you repeat in every thread.

No, and nor should he have. Have some respect for what he did for the club.

Hey im just asking a question here

So he still took his salary despite admitting he was a passenger. Good lord what a legend. He probably hate scousers too. Not that he overstayed with them. He did that with us and thats embarrassing (his words not mine)

WUMing hard. Gary is a legend even if he did get the salaray that he was contractually obligated to have, a contract the club signed off on.

I never said he wasnt a legend. However its embarrassing that a legend goes on taking money out of the club despite being useless to them. Even gaz agree with that

Which game was this?

Can someone forward this to rooney.

What should we forward exactly? That its ok to get a salary despite not being good enough anymore to do the job as long as you admit to that afterwards?

He retired when he realised he couldn't do it anymore. So he stopped getting a salary from the club.

That's the whole point of the story.
