Gary Neville - Pundit

I'll tell you one thing and I'm not ashamed to say it, my estimation of Gary Neville as a pundit has fecking plummeted.

His fecking coach turned into a pumpkin, he-he.

Yeah that's how I see it. People can think he's completely wrong, criticise his view etc, but he's not someone who'll call for a manager to be sacked rightly or wrongly.

It's a strange rule and I think it's a bit cowardly .. why is he okay with criticizing players or asking them to be dropped / sold but not okay with asking managers to be removed?

That’s a good point you make. Neville has scorned the owners and the players of Utd plenty of times, despite being a player himself as well as an owner of a club himself. If managers are so fecking taboo to him, then surely players and owners are too?

This man once said he was delighted Lukaku left the club and called Joel Glazer a bottle merchant a few months ago… but the manager? Oh feck no that’s akin to walking into a synagogue in an SS outfit.

The bizarre thing about it, if he's outright stating he will never call for a managerial change, is that this is pretty much an admission that he sees the manager as irrelevance to our success. If it makes no difference whatsoever then in Neville's mind whoever the manager is must surely be one of the least important people at the football club.

Very few of the top pundits, United or otherwise, have come out and said that Ole should be sacked. All that will do will lead to headlines that they fear could lead to even more pressure put on Ole. Most have walked upto the line and said that the performances are not good enough and that something has to change.

End of the day though, its upto Woodward and Richard Arnold to propose the replacement of Ole. They must know that what they are seeing right now is good enough. I would hope they are not waiting on word from Gary Neville.

You guys are all overthinking it and I don’t understand why you care/putting so much energy into Neville.

I think he understands the importance of a manager.
As a former manager himself, i just don't think he wants the headlines written that say "Neville calls for Ole to be fired". Same goes for any other manager.

Then what's the point of him? For someone paid big money to be the highest paid football pundit probably in the world to be afraid of expressing an opinion is fairly ridiculous.

Yeah players often become punching bags in these scenarios, where commitment and desire will be questioned when there’s clear tactical and structural issues which is affecting performance and leading to confidence plummeting.

His managerial stance isn’t because of his connection to Ole which some comments here suggest, it’s always been his stance w he FB commentating on managers.

He's in the wrong career. I'm sorry but he's basically saying "anyone can do anything they want, who am I to judge it". Your career literally exists for this. Just stop going on TV if you're afraid to give an opinion.

His logic is utterly flawed. The 3-0 win against Spurs is apparently evidence that our staff can coach, but according to Neville they just don’t do it enough and hence performances like against Everton, Villa etc. He would make an excellent politician.

He's firmly Ole in

He's firmly Ole out

The quotes very, very, very obviously show that Neville's opinion of Ole is that he's finished as Manchester United manager. But Nevilles's wrestling against his own personal principles to avoid calling it out.

These are the same principles that stopped him from calling for the Moyes, LvG and Mourinho sackings in the past. Not to mention the Nuno, Smith, Bruce, Farke, Xisco and Jones sackings this season.
'There are people saying this is the worst moment of my punditry career,' Neville told Sportsmail this week.

'They say I am not being honest. But I am not paid on TV to sack managers and I ain't doing it.

'I know the impact of Gary Neville saying a Man United manager should be sacked.

'For the pundits who have said it then "Well done" but it's not my style.

'When I see another pundit calling for any sacking, I cringe. My stomach turns.

'My line is crossed with that.

Reading between the lines I agree with you. He wont say all this if he believes Ole is competent deep down

Exactly.

If Neville was 'Ole in', he'd be saying positive things about Solskjaer. Instead, he's explaining the personal principles that have stopped him from ever saying a club should fire a manager during all his years at Sky. That explanation only needs saying if his underlying opinion is that Ole should actually be sacked!

I find it weird.
It's okay to say a player (also a human being) is not good enough and should be binned but to say the same for a manager is sacrilege.
This same "principled" man went on TV to call Pogba a disgrace.
He's fooling himself.
It is also guite clear he doesn't think Ole is good enough.

It would have been a good principle if Neville at least thought couple of times before talking shit about players. They are also humans.

Yet hes quite happy to sack mangers within months of starting at Salford. A case of do as I say, not as I do. Biggest hypocrite and prick on the TV

When talking about Salford, he basically admitted to being at best blinkered or at worst, dishonest.
Disregard the man. Tbh, people who make their judgment on what a pundit says are pretty dim imo. Their opinions really shouldn't matter. Use your own eyes.

People who fume and rage over another persons opinion on football are a bit silly. It's clear he thinks Ole's finished and he's got his own reasons which he's stated as to why he's not putting that out there publicly.

He's tacitly said Solskjaer is unlikely to turn it around and Poch should be hired from my reading.

Completely unrelated because he has 2 different roles.

How so? How can he pontificate to the public and his TV cronies one thing, only to do the opposite when he is in charge?
Bit like a bloke spouting to an AA meeting about the demon drink and dont do it and when the meetings over goes and has a skinfull in the boozer next door.

Sure Gary Neville the pundit probably hates Gary Neville the club owner. I wonder what Gary Neville the pundit thinks of Gary Neville the player. Gary Neville the pundit is so quick to judge players while the latter had said that he felt stealing a year's worth of salary by staying at United when he should have retired. All of these versions of Gary Neville probably think that Gary Neville the manager is clueless with Gary Neville the pundit spending time showing why by tapping on his IPAD. Gary Neville the owner would probably sack him but Gary Neville the pundit would probably protect him.

"You might think that... but Gary Neville couldn't possibly comment*

(* the budding politician following in the style of Francis Urquhart :))

You don't know what hypocrite means.

It's his responsibility to hire and sack managers under his employ.

It's not his responsibility to hire or sack managers employed by other people.

It's the difference between scolding you're own kids at home for being naughty versus scolding a stranger's kids in public for doing the same thing. That's their business and this is yours.

Gary Neville is a minority shareholder in Salford. Minority shareholders don’t make those decisions.

They can, depends on their level of influence. Isn’t Salford Lim + project 92 anyway so you’d assume GNev, if anyone, will have the most say given his ties to Lim?

He has openly admitted to sacking managers. One in particular, too early.

Yup.

"Neville is not only a football pundit. He is a businessman who owns hotels, a new university and a football club, Salford City of League Two. He has sacked a number of managers in his time.

'Absolutely 100 per cent I have,' he countered.
'That's my job. My club. That's not my job with Manchester United.
'Look if I was in charge of the football club [United] I would certainly have to make different decisions than what you hear on TV over the last 11 years.
'However I am not willing to say that on TV.'
So does that make him dishonest?
'No,' he fires back.
'It doesn't. I just won't go there. I'm on the fence for the first time!"

Everything should make sense (that he is not Ole in but won't call a manager out) had he not sat on his high horse and mocking those who criticized Ole because "remember 1999". His recent comments felt like he's trying to be in a more neutral stance because he had been taking the Ole situation way too personally and he's now trying not to be controversial in the eyes of fans. But as with his previous comments, you can always find something that contradict the other. Definitely not the one who speaks his mind, they're all calculated but that's fair, need to keep them SkySports bosses happy. I won't see him as a voice of reason for that reason though.

I don't believe that he is not Ole in. He is. He even brought up events in the past that has no correlation to Ole's current job to defend him. When you want to judge someone's character, do it during a desperate time, that's their true characters being shown. Him and Ole, they're mates after all. Neutral stance by Gary Neville. Nothing new, can't be blamed for anything by anyone. Souless punditry. I just find it kind of funny when he used Ole's status as a legend to defend him when all the things went wrong. That's the type of arguments your average caf posters can come up with easily. You don't need a pundit on live television to tell you to respect Ole for what he's done to the club. But it's irrelevant because most people that want Ole gone, are the ones that also want Ole to stop ruining his legacy even further. But then again Gary Neville didn't know his limits either, became Valencia manager and failed horribly. And guess how he got the job? the power of mates.
