Gary Hooper

He scored five on the last day of the season in a meaningless game against a Hearts side who have a Scottish cup final against their arch rivals to focus on next week instead.

Good striker who might be decent for a bottom half team, but for Man United? Nah.

Seems to have a good scoring record for Celtic. Not somebody that I'd like to see United going for, but could do it for a team in the lower half of the league.

He did well for Scunthorpe when they were in the Championship IIRC. Can't think he'd be above a Wigan/QPR/Norwich level.

fecking no. Not good enough for the Premier League, and until the last game of the season he was run very close for top goalscorer by Dundee United's Jon Daly who is an atrocious player.

I remember the same things being said about Henrik Larsson in here.

He apparently wasn't good enough for Utd because he played in a "shit" league.

Jon Daly isn't the best player by any stretch of the imagination but he's hardly atrocious, scored a couple of good goals this season.

On the matter of Hooper though, i think some of you are being a bit harsh, he would do well for a club like Swansea considering the style of football they play. He's an outright finisher and if they had him they would probably 'snatch' a lot more games.

Aye, good finisher but one-dimensional and that's clear even in the SPL. More Boyd than Jelavic.

He offers much more in link-up play than Boyd did. He's 6th in the league for assists this season and does loads of good work out wide and down the channels. Not, at the moment anyway, a top drawer striker, but a good player none the less.

Scottish league might be rubbish. But he would be worth a gamble for a midtable team in the PL. It worked out well for Everton.

Depends though...Henrik Larson was proven in the international stage with Sweden and did well for celtic in the champions league. He also scored record numbers of goals. You could tell he was something else in a shite league.

I think its pretty hit and miss and as the OP says, buying him (not us of course) would be nothing more than a punt.

Who knows if he's more Jelavic or Liam Miller? (Different players but you get the point)

Larsson's ability should not be compared to someone like Hooper though. It's a massive insult to him. Larsson was a much better all-round player, who scored more goals, and the league was even a tad better back then as well.

Yes he's neater and tidier than Boyd ever was, but as a ballpark measure of quality he's not much different. The fact Samaras gets so much gametime at Celtic Park despite scoring about 5 goals per season is testament to both Hooper and Stokes' inability to carry out much of the effective, back-to-goal work that Samaras is good at.

Meh. I think he's a much better all round footballer than Boyd ever was, and has more potential. He's got a bit of pace and touch to go with the natural poaching instinct that he shares with Boyd. But...

Sorry Hooper is king up in scotland atm but would be mid table level at best in the premier league.

this is pretty much right, which is why Southampton are after him and why I think (and hope) he should stay put. He'll get the chance of CL football with us next year, and, realistically, for a few years after. He can score a barrowload of goals with us for the next couple of seasons and move when he's at his peak if he wants to. He's 24, so has plenty of time.

My point, which seems to be missed, is that there is an opinion in England that anybody who plays in Scotland is not good enough for Utd.

Having seen Larsson play at Parkhead several times throughout his career, I am fully aware of the kind of player he was.

I don't think it's an outlandish thing to claim that the SPL is at its lowest since quite a long time ago. For someone to be good enough to play for United has to be outstanding in that league.

I see where you're coming from. As someone who watches the SPL though, I can confirm that the majority of players aren't top class ones who would make it in the Premier League. There are certainly no strikers at the moment who would make it here to be honest.

Larsson was one of a kind in a way. He could've quite easily moved onto bigger and better things than Celtic before he actually did, but chose to stay on for a while longer.

Larsson was exceptional, no question, but still not good enough for some of the "experts" in here. His talent, commitment and professionalism was a lesson for all. Money seems to be the key nowadays and I fear staunchly loyal players, the likes of G. Neville, Scholes and Giggs are a thing of the past.

I don't intend to labour the point, but simply saying a player isn't good enough because of where he plays is a nonsense.

That said, I would be disappointed if Utd were to be aiming at bringing in players of Hooper's calibre to compete with Brewsters Millions next door.

Larsson played at a time when the SPL wasn't too bad and the two Glasgow clubs had a bit fo money. I'd love to have taken Brian Laudrup from Rangers as another example but I wouldn't take a player from Rangers right now.

I do have difficulty with some of the names currently playing in Scotland, in particular, recognising them!
