GARY CAHILL has been told to expect a bid from Manchester United after the World Cup.

The Bolton defender was watched closely last season by Sir Alex Ferguson and now United are preparing a £15million bid.

Sources close to the Old Trafford boss have indicated to the former Aston Villa star that he will make the long-awaited approach within a few weeks.

Cahill, 24, was virtually ruled out of contention for the England World Cup squad when he suffered an injury caused by a blood clot in his arm last autumn.

He recovered in time to help Bolton to top-flight safety but boss Owen Coyle made it clear that he would not stand in the way of him leaving.

United need English players to help comply with the Premier League’s new ruling which states that clubs must have eight home-grown players in their squad from next season. (News of the World)

We won't get another defender unless Vidic leaves United.
 
Seems a bit strange to spend £10m on Smalling and then another £15m on Cahill given they're quite similar in style.

Obviously rubbish.
 
This is bullshit. The other transfer related thread has Sir Alex once again saying there is no value, £15million for Cahill certainly doesnt represent value in my mind. Also, do we need more english players to fill the quota? I thought we had enough
 
United have been linked with him on and off now for a while, though obviously that means nothing. It'd be interesting to see if the like of Everton move for him, even Spurs if they don't get Kjaer.

Also interesting, I recall him saying he'd consider declaring for the Republic of Ireland if he didn't make the England World Cup squad (or maybe I'm completely making that up), but it'd be interesting to see what way that one pans out.
 
With Rio being perma-crocked it would be a good move. I go to the Reebok to watch Bolton a few times a season and this lad is a really good player.

Well Tevez was not exactly a regular in his last season and Owen might be old but he's still good and expereienced and 9 goals was a good return. I don't really think Cahill is a patch on Vidic. Another reason this rumor should be just that. :nervous:

Manchester United are set to splash £15m on Bolton’s highly-rated defender Gary Cahill.

Sir Alex Ferguson is becoming increasingly worried over his first choice defensive partnership of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

Ferdinand, who played only 19 times last season for United because of leg and back problems, also missed the World Cup because of a knee ligament injury suffered in the first training session in South Africa.

And there are fears the England captain might not be ready for a comeback until late September.

Meanwhile Vidic, who formed Europe’s best defensive partnership with Ferdinand in 2007 and 2008, has yet to settle a new Old Trafford deal amid speculation that he could leave United.

Real Madrid have constantly been tracking the Serb and he’s been touted as one of Jose Mourinho’s targets for the Bernabeu to strengthen the Galacticos at the back.

United have Jonny Evans and newcomer Chris Smalling as back up but Cahill, 24, has now emerged as a front runner to add to Fergie’s defensive stock.

Cahill is already tipped as a beneficiary from England’s World Cup debacle with John Terry, Ledley King, Jamie Carragher and Matthew Upson all failing to impress. Cahill was in one Fabio Capello squad last summer against Kazakhstan but has yet to win a full cap.

The Sheffield-born, former Aston Villa defender has previously been linked with Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs.

It is likely Cahill will feature when the Italian names his squad for next month’s friendly against Hungary and the European Championship qualifier with Bulgaria in September.

Wanderers chief Owen Coyle certainly believes Cahill is good enough, saying: “He is the best centre-half in England. He is the complete package. I recommended him to be part of the World Cup squad.

“The disappointment for me was that he wasn’t in the initial 30-man squad. If he had been, they would have seen him and I know he would have been selected.”

Cahill admitted: “Being realistic, if a big team wanted me to come and play for them, then you have got to look at it. It may be a right decision for both sides.

“I’m not saying for one minute I want to leave Bolton. I have loved my time here and the club has done brilliantly for me.”

Well he's 24, a pretty good age for a centreback.

If you break 15million down into lets say 5 years, that averages out at 3million per year. Buying Cahill will add more pressure on Evans though, I can't see us buying him unless Rio trully is fecked. Considering Vidics and Evans injury issues last season, it might not be such a bad idea...

Not unless the staff think that Rio's injuries are carear threatening. Besides, Wes isn't getting any younger, Neville (emergency CB) is also pretty much retiring.

If an injury hits Vidic and Brown. Then we're left with Evans and O'Shea. We don't want a repeat of last seasons crisis of having to use Carrick/Fletcher.

Cahill makes sense imo.

For all we know Rio may be beyond repair.

Vidic, Evans, Cahill, Smalling, O'Shea + Brown. I don't think that's too many, especially as O'Shea and Brown are mainly used as full backs.

Beyond repair, AND kept out of the 25-men squad completely?

There are obviously questions marks over Ferdinand, but we can't stock up on tons of centerhalves just in case our worst fears are confirmed. I'm no longer even sure he is out until November, although he's obviously not fit at the moment.

I'm sure they could make room easily enough. We're all expecting 1 or 2 to go out on loan.

I was rather hoping that if we cleared some space, it would be for a striker or a midfielder, not another cover for the backline. We've got, I think, a squad of 25 now (plus players who are beyond that quota, such as Macheda and co) and I think Diouf is the only one of the 25 who is likely to go on loan. Welbeck, for instance, is not one of the 25 anyway.

As for Rio, I've heard nothing. But you've got today's Telegraph saying he'll miss the start of the season, but nothing like being out until November. And apparently Rio's got a twitter account and he hasn't mentioned anything about such a long layoff injury, although he did say he was going to the start of pre season training today but was not going to actually train.
 
people are putting a lot of trust into Smalling, as yet practically untried CB

Cahill would make sense to me, young, English, good potential.

Unfortunately i cant see Rio's injury problems going away anytime soon
 
Yeah. I rate him. But atm I don't think we have space for another CB. And don't think he'd move right now to sit on the bench especially since he is on the verge of England.

Indeed. I still hope we go for him though. Having him and Evan as back up to the now oft injured Rio and Vidic would be good. I don't trust Brown as a CB anymore and Smalling is way too unproven.

Yep. Shambolic offer if true.

He's spent that long out of the transfer market it's like he's lost all concept of economic value.

I wonder if he goes to the supermarket and offers 50p for a fillet steak. Idiot.

Reported to be in the region of £6m which is just ridiculous. It's like a token offer from Wenger to make it look like they are trying to sign players.
