Since I am at home with the flu, I have far too much time to explain why I think Bale to United could be a good idea.
If it is not possible to get hold of Sancho this transfer window, and Solskjær wants to go for a temporary solution, then I think Bale is interesting. It is under the condition that Real pays AT LEAST half of his salary and that it is otherwise a loan agreement that minimizes the risk for Manchester United. Like Alexis Sanchez to Inter.
Just because we have been unlucky/incompetent with some older/injured players like Sanchez, Schweinsteiger, Falcao, etc., we cannot only buy players under the age of 25. At least from an outside perspective, it seems that Solskjær has introduced a much stricter regime when it comes to checking whether the players actually want to be here, something the club obviously lacked before. If Solskjær talks to Bale (and manager for Wales, Giggs) and is convinced that he is motivated, then this transfer has a very high potential. An example from this season is Perisic to Bayern. He was seen by most United fans as too old or a boring signing when Mourinho wanted him, but he played the semi-final in the CL for Bayern this season, and I dare say that he contributed a at least something to Bayern winning the cup. Zlatan was not too bad for United either, even though he may soon receive his pension.
As we all know, we do not have any good options behind Greenwood on the right wing. We can not enter a season where the club will fight for a place in the top 4 and CL, with a 19-year-old striker as the only real alternative in that position. By the way, I love Juan Mata, but unfortunately it he is a little bit to slow on the wing for him to be the first choice. Lingard and Peirera, do I need to say anything about these two? Daniel James is also far too unpolished, and I do not remember him having a good match on the right. He thrives best on the left.
Finally, it can be mentioned that there are quite a few examples of players who have left Real Madrid and done well above average. James Rodriguez to Everton is the latest example of that, although it is too early to say when it comes to him. But otherwise Ozil, Sneijder, Robben and Higuain can all be mentioned. Di Maria too, he just did not want to be in Manchester (cf. above that the club is now better at identifying whether players want to be here or not).
I think Bale has looked lively for Wales now in the Nations League, and it is only two seasons ago he single-handedly changed the CL final with two goals that I am one hundred percent sure that neither Andreas Pereira nor Jesse Lingard can do in their dreams. It is possible I am naive, but is it possible for a player like Bale to be so much worse in two seasons? We have to keep in mind that much of what comes from the press in Madrid is not exactly nuanced when it comes to players who are out in the cold.
