Gareth Bale

I said it in the other thread but I don't see any connection between Bale and Depay, they play on opposite sides.
I've a Spurs supporting friend who swears blind that Bale is much much better on the left. He's only played consistently on the right since he went to Real. He could easily score 20 goals for us from the left in my opinion and his weaknesses are less apparent when he plays on the left. On the right he cuts in and runs into crowds where his close control or lack of is highlighted.

I just realized Di Maria and Bale are having similar seasons. Statistics say their end products have been good. If you didn't watch any games you'd think they were both having a great season.

Yep with PSG failing in the CL again, I can see them turning their attention to Di Maria who is still on 27. We won't get the ridiculous £60million we paid for him back though which is why I would be hesitant in selling him. I can see the club taking a £10million loss on him but nothing more, he is also doing well for the club on a commercial front (I think he is leading in shirt sales in the whole of the Premier league).

However if a move/swap for a guy like Veratti is on the cards, then I would be open to letting him go, a player like Veratti is something this teams sorely lacks when Carrick is injured.

If we can use Di Maria to get Veratti or Silva (or maybe even Moura) ...we should definitely go for it.

Gareth Bale is being outperformed by guys like Ronaldo, Rodriquez and Kroos while Di Maria is getting outperformed by Young and Fellaini

True. But on the flip side isn't it easier to play with world class players around you?

I agree with that. He's like a Giggsy rather than a Robben.

Plus Bale has been given a far more consistent playing time. It's also his second season at the club.

I suppose you could argue that Bale would do better at a team that was built around him rather than being in a supporting role like he is at Real, but if he is going to make it at the top level he needs to find a way to fit into a star-studded team. I'm always impressed with how Benzema has adapted at Real, he's a natural goalscorer and leading man but he sacrifices himself at times for Real and does a lot of good work to allow Ronaldo and others opportunities.

Bale should be playing on the left,to play on the right he should be better combinating with the midfield and in the control of the ball, however in the left is Cristiano.Madrid should decide 2 good years of Cristiano or bet everything with Bale.Bale is a great player but I dont see him as the leader that Madrid needs. After 2 years he hardly speaks spanish and doesnt have any influence in the dressing room.I would prefer an iberian or southamerican player to be the new leader.Anyway,Bale is 130-150 mill € or nothing. New tv deal + adidas, florentino smells the money. If not they can sign Depay, also a good option ;)

I don't like Bale. He's like a better version of Valencia. Can't get past anyone if he doesn't have space to reach top gear.

Bale would count as home-grown (in nation) for us, wouldn't he? Perhaps that could be a consideration.

Bale would have the exact same problems that Di Maria is having right now. He'd be an awful signing.

He's absolutely not the winger we need for LVG's possession system, people just want him for the name. Same reason people still think Falcao can turn it around.

Nah he is useless in tight spaces.

How are people not seeing this?

Its like they still think we're a Fergie team or that LVG is suddenly going to change his possession system. We're not, and he's not.

Who is the winger we need then? As current Caf flavour of month Depay shares the same traits.

I'm honestly not sure, Hazard or Sanchez would have been perfect.

From what I've seen on Depay, he's got a bit more about him when it comes to skill/beating a man, he's not so reliant on pure pace/power. But obviously he's not the perfect option either I guess.

What? Depay can beat a man from a standing position. Bale has to be running to go past someone, if he's not he usually just passes the ball.

If we spunk £100m on Bale, I'm convinced this club is managed by morons. What happened to developing players? Spending £160m on two Madrid cast offs (players they no longer wanted) is inexplicable. Not to mention they've both been crap for large parts of this season.

I would like either but in a comparison Bale pisses all over Depay.

He would make a huge difference for us, we would massively regret City or Chelsea signing him.

Add to that they're both players that are totally unsuited to our style of play.

Our transfer policy has been ridiculous for years though.

We don't need to spend 50 million plus on a wideman. It would be such a poor move on our part when you consider the strengthening we need in other areas. Rather spend that money on our midfield and defence and get s younger wide player in.

That's the issue right there, options of the type that most seem to think LvG wants are not so easy to obtain.

Pedro would be a good fit and Depay is also more suited.

Pedro from Barca? I would doubt they will sell him until after the ban is lifted and he's a bit weak IMO.

I've watched Depay quite a few times now and close control is not his strongest suit by a long shot, he's a pace winger like Bale, not a big dribbler who works out of tight areas regularly.

Fair more pressing matters than Bale, just get Nani back.

Nani, Young, Di Maria, and Mata are good options, throw Depay into the mix and it gets even better.

If De Gea goes get a player we really need, Modric, or Varane would come in handy.

I don't think Bale is an unrealstic signing for us at all.

I'm sure he will be a United player at some point in his career anyway.

What about Sterling? Thrives in tight spaces.

I agree. If we're going for a high pressure, dominating style of play then we need players who can operate in tight spaces, not like Bale and Di Maria. Bale would be a perfect Fergie signing, but I really don't think he'd fit Van Gaal's style whatsoever. We should be looking for the next Hazard/Sanchez who can beat a man with close control and intricate dribbling, not raw athleticism.

Sterling would be ideal.

Given his large number of offspring at such young age, he sure does.

Absolutely bang on the money.

We don't need Bale imho. I don't like him for that ridiculous price - that is such a rip off. Also, Bale does not want to come to United. He's turned us down before and I don't believe he's that into us - which means I don't want him. In fact, don't want anymore superstars, just talented solid players committed to the club.

Di Maria is good in tight spaces too, dont know what people talk about. Bale i agree, but Di Maria last year was immense in dribbling 2-3 players in tight spaces.

I'd rather splash money for Sterling as I don't see Bale as a good fit to our system. He's worth a lot of money for counter attacking team. I believe he would score some goals from distance but still, Sterling would be perfect.

Leaning toward not wanting. I think he is like Di Maria and is good at beating players on the counter attack or a fast move. With possession as the style these players don't fit.

Nani is frustrating but can beat players from a standing start and can dribble with ease in tight spaces. We could save a lot of cash.

He can play on right and cross or cut in and shoot with his left. Or he can play left and use his huge shot.

So much hate in this thread. If there's even a chance we are in for him this summer everyone here will be wanking themselves silly, and rightfully so. LVG will adjust his approach to accommodate what is one of the best young players in the world. That's what top managers do. 'Better version of Valencia', 'just stick with Nani', you guys are insane if you think those two have anything even remotely on Bale. Do people forget so quickly?

Bale and Depay are exactly the type of players we need in the wide positions. We have plenty of players who can stroke the ball outside the penalty area without being any kind of threat. Both of them are well capable of getting in behind the defense, and most importantly, they know where the goal is. Both of them also are threat from outside the box as well, right now we don't have anyone who can shoot from the outside. Sometimes you need players who can smack the ball from the outside when you are not able to break a team down. To finance both of those players, i would gladly let Di Maria move as long as we get close to what we paid for him.
