Might have something to do with the value of the euro crashing?

Fair point. I never really considered that. I don't know much about the euro apart from it being at one of its lowest but surely that means Real still put such a low buyout in his contract.

Most top names in la liga have stupid ones around 500million etc

Although why do I remember some sort of change in law about stupidly high buyout clauses being stopped. Hmmm

We'd need RvP with Falcao going. Can't just rely on Rooney and Wilson. The point is we don't want another major turnover of players.

Van Persie should be sold and replaced. We still need another four to five players, including a dynamic striker, which isn't too much of a turnover, in my opinion.

Depay is tearing up the Erdivise but so is Luuk De Jong. It is a far from an acid test.

Bale costs more of course but he also brings a hell of a lot more to the table commercially. He turns 26 in the summer and is entering the peak of his powers. If we can sign him then we should and I am sure that we will.

Austin is doing the same in the EPL this season. Last year it was Bony's and Sturridge turn and the year before that Benteke was the man. Should we just avoid buying players from the EPL because of it?

We could keep RvP as a backup to Rooney and Wilson as insurance should both get injured at the same time. If we depart with RvP then I'd be more comfortable with Hernandez returning than buying a striker to simply sit on the bench in a one striker formation with Rooney alone up front.

This transfer should have happened about 5 years ago.

Agree completely. I remember in the tunnel before 1 match he walked up to Giggs and shook his hand. At that time he was 'up and coming' and would have jumped at the chance to join us. Still, a transfer now, at his age, still is not too late....

I'm sure they talk every now and then, such as during the summer tour.

If we are going to play with one up front which seems to be the case, we don't need more than 3 players. They also can't all be big enough names to expect to start every game. Look at Bayern, they only have Lewa and Pizarro or Madrid with Benzema and Hernandez. Rooney, RvP and Wilson is more than enough providing we have enough goal threat from the attacking mid and wide positions which we definitely would if we buy Bale.

Haha! Before, it was very much Bale chasing and looking up to Giggs. Soon before he joined Madrid, I'm sure you'll remember stories of Giggs frantically trying to call Bale to convince him to sign for UTD. How the tables have turned. So, point remains, this transfer probably could and should have happed around 5 yearsaa ago.;)

Ideally, the striker would be more of a young, dynamic attacker that's happy to play up top and out wide, eventually moving into Rooney's role in the long term. That would be the hope, at least.

To me, it's all about bridging the gap between Rooney and Wilson. A forward aged between that pair would set the position up nicely, particularly with European football bringing about extra number of games.

Van Persie is old, on massive wages and plays like he doesn't give a damn. We're best getting rid and saving the predictable stress his benching will bring.

We could buy him for 100m Euros And it would be £73m.

Bid £80m and that's 110m ish euros.

Profit for Perez to save face?

If really want Bale to leave they will not worry about making a profit on him. They have lost plenty on transfers in the past.

I seem to remember us making some effort to sign him when he was at Southampton but, for some reason, we either decided not to pursue it or Bale turned us down.

Bale is very much the Lewandowski or the Fabregas of a year ago. Everyone on redcafe will get so excited about how we have such a great chance to sign them but all ends in tears eventually in the end. At the end of the day why would Real Madrid sell a player who is in the top 5 players in the world just because they are having a dip in form despite being their second best player last year when they won the Decima?
If there was one player I'd choose us to sign in the summer then it would be Bale but Mardid would be nuts to sell him....you never know in football...maybe to afford Pogba they will need to off-load Bale but he would instantly be the best player at Man Utd if somehow by fluke we got him

The overrating of this lad is insane.

Looks like the penny has finally dropped with Madrid too, good player, but never worth the kind of money he cost.

2. Jürgen Damm: 35.23 km/h
3. Antonio Valencia: 35.1 km/h
4. Aaron Lennon: 33.8 km/h
5. Cristiano Ronaldo: 33.6 km/h
6. Theo Walcott: 32.7 km/h.
7. Lionel Messi: 32.5 km/h.
8. Wayne Rooney: 31.2 km/h.
9. Frank Ribéry: 30.7 km/h.
10. Sergio Ramos: 30.6 km/h.

We've got 2 of the top 10.
Surely Di Maria should also be in there...no?
And what about A.Robben?

So Mexican club Pachuca commision a study to see who the fastest footballer is and a Pachuca player finishes 2nd. :)

He would have the exact same issues that Di Maria is having trying to fit into a possession based team.

Would be a massive flop.

I disagree. Gareth is perfect for the premier league and has proven as much already. I think with his pace and directness he'd offer us something different in a possession based team when the passing all becomes a bit tedious.

I hear Laurent Blanc had a bit of pace in his day.

To be honest, there is no clear outstanding candidate out there for this role in my view. Reus perhaps.

Hazard and Sanchez were the last great wingers on the market, disregarding Neymar which was a closed auction between two clubs. All today's options have pros and cons really, it's a toss up between them for the best option.

Bale is an outstanding candidate. A player who has scored 65 goals (and don't know who many assists) in 131 apperances in the last 3 seasons, and is not even 26 yet, is great imo. We would be stupid to miss out on him if he becomes available. Yesterday showed how bereft we are of top quality on the wings. Bale definitely solves that conundrum.

I have little doubt that he is going to light up the league when he comes back. Always was a natural successor to Giggs. Hope we get him this time, better late than never.

Bale would obviously be a great addition.

Still don't know why we didn't battle Arsenal for Sanchez's signature last year, though.

He's peffectly suited to the PL and he solves a problem we have - a distinct lack of pace going forward. Its fine playing the ball around midfield but to open teams up you need to be able to spread the ball quickly. Speed of thought and passing is one part - raw pace and genuine threat outwide is the other.

Fully agreed. After Messi the one player I would love to see here.

However, I am not sure how Bale + Fellaini + "LVG possession style" can be shoehorned into one system.

Yep agree but Bale would be an awesome addition to our team. Would lift us to another level imo.

As one of the muppets close to this transfer, I believe that we tried to sign him but he wanted to join a team playing CL football and London was probably also more exciting than Manchester.

If I'm not mistaken our first targets last summer were Hummels, Rakitic, Sanchez, Shaw and Herrera.
