Gareth Bale retires | Begins his golf career next month

George best was the best player arguably for Man Utd, and won world player of the year
Bale was not the best player at Madrid and hasn’t won world player of the year ?

he wasted his career with an alcohol problem and seems he couldn’t handle the celebrity status, bale choose to be a bit part player

I didn't say otherwise. Best was phenomenal, no doubt. My point was related to you claiming Bale's status is diminished to due him falling away relativity young. I simply pointed out that Best was essentially finished at 28 and asked if that diminished his achievements. I don't think it does, and it looks like you don't either, in which case you have to concede that the same is true for Bale.

And Bale hardly choose to be a bit part player. Injuries took away his phenomenal physical attributes, which is why he became a bit part player. When his game time became limited he pushed for a move several times, including after scoring two goals in a champion league final (one of them arguably the best ever goal in a final). Oh and Bale has plenty of achievements, despite never winning world player of the year.

I’m not sure he’s ever been top3?
Best has a sense of romance about him like a lot of players of yesteryears
And like I said he was a central part of Man Utd, bale was not a central part of Real Madrid. Bale and zidane didn’t work out, he should have left but stayed on his monster contract.

do you think he’s the best ever British player? Because if not we both agree and mainly disagreeing over why he’s not

Rated him higher than Walcott when they were 17 year olds at Soton and then Walcott was getting all the attention for joining Arse and being picked for the world cup. Would have been a natural for us at right wing. I wonder if Fergie ever wanted him.

Gareth Bale should be considered one of the greatest players to ever play the game. Players held in much higher esteem haven't accomplished half of what he has for his club(s), or scored as many big goals, including his former manager...

Only players to win the PFA Player of the year award twice since it’s conception in 1973

Mo Salah
Kevin De Bruyne
Gareth Bale
C Ronaldo
Thierry Henry
Alan Shearer
Mark Hughes

Not a bad group of names to be amongst

Anyone underrating him at his best needs to wobble their head quite substantially

Surprised he’s right handed

Who under rated him? His peak was great but it really wasn’t long in the grand scheme of things and before anyone says anything, he did not peak at spurs. That’s like saying Ronaldo peaked at United.

Is he any good at it? I mean, if he keeps at it, is he good enough to make a 2nd career out of it? Or is he just an enthusiastic amateur who's pretty good for a club player?

Apparently he plays off 2, which whilst decent is nothing special in the scheme of things. I played off 2 when I was 17 y/o (which then was more difficult to get to before the new h'cap changes) and was fairly average amongst peers at County level, let alone National/International.

He better wear a Real Madrid full kit while playing professional golf. He owes them that.

where did he get all that time to practice golf, what with being a topflight footballer and all, hmmmm

How many hours a week mandatory training do you think footballers have?
I assure you, calling it a part time job hours wise is being phenomenally generous

His left hand/arm is doing all the work.
Dabbled a bit in golf when I was younger, and if I'm not mistaken Bale is playing as if he's right-handed. Maybe it's more common to be left-footed/right-handed than I thought, my dad is the same.

A lot of professionals are left handed but set up like this, same goes the other way. your lead arm should be the strongest. Bales a 2 handicap and has a very nice swing so his right hand probably isnt doing anything other than gripping the club.

Theres pictures of him signing contracts with his right hand, so I guess its a bit of a moot point.

Plenty of people are right handed and left footed, he's probably just that?

Has anything like this ever happened before? A professional sports person changing sports?

A few have done it in American sports. The most unbelievable is Bo Jackson, who managed to be an All Star in the MLB (baseball) in 1989 followed by doing the same in the NFL (American football) in 1990.

Which is basically like being named in team of the year for cricket one year and being in the FIFA World XI the next.

Not to the same level but 2 footballers who played in the premier league, quit to become boxers. Curtis Woodhouse and Leon Mackenzie. Became British champions.
