The lady leader of the group was miscast big time. I didn't buy her, at all. Looks like she should work at the local bakery or something.

And I'm still having a hard time believing that pedro is 56!

I did still enjoy this episode, though.

The main heart of the story - the Ellie and Joel relationship is working. I'm buying joel and ellie becoming closer. That part has been well paced throughout the four episodes.

Yeah, I don't buy Kathleen at all. All I could see is "Rose" every time she was on screen. Weird cast for this type of role.

Glad that they kept the porn mag scene. I also really like that they kept the joke book. I think the relationship between Joel and Ellie is having to be rushed a bit, because a lot of content has to be skipped for a tv show. There is a lot more travelling time and combat that brings them together in game. It was nice to see them both have a laugh over the diarrhea joke at the end of the episode.

They've toned down a lot of the violence in the show. They skipped Joel using his old man strength to overpower a raider and kill him using that broken glass. They also didn't show him killing the raider that Ellie shot in the back. If they keep going like this, the second series is going to be a very different experience to the game. A lot of that game was about how brutal the world is.

Preview of the next episode:
Based on the preview of the next episode, it looks like they've made Sam deaf. It'll be interesting to see how that works. Unless Ellie knows sign language, she's not going to be able to have the discussion with Sam about whether the people are still 'there' when they've turned. That was one of the better conversations in the game.

Looking forward to seeing the bloater in the next episode.

Feck me I haven't watched the preview, and I know this is the discuss with spoilers thread, but sad face.

On the rest of your post, I don't watch TV generally (more movies than series) so I hadn't seen Kathleen before. I was suprised they kept the porn mag scene, but glad they did. In episode 1, Ellie tips her sexuality (well, I thought she did simply because I knew from the second game) and wondered how that scene would play out... Exposing my ignorance but would a lesbian be interested in penises or more specifically, how they fit?

Despite only replaying 1 a couple of weeks ago, is there a bloater in the Henry Sam segment? When the concrete was moving, I did wonder if there was gonna be a bloater there - or worse, RK, which would take a massive shock out of 2 away.

I apologise. They show a preview at the end of each episode, so I figured everybody saw it. I put my thoughts on that in spoiler tags.

I know she's been in a lot more things, but I mostly know her from Two and a Half Men. That is all I could see when she was on screen. I don't think she has the personality to pull off a leader of this type of group. They could have gotten a better actress to do it.

I think I must have missed Ellie doing that in the first episode. I always figured that she just wanted to make a joke and make Joel feel a bit uncomfortable.

There isn't a bloater in their section during the game, but they show one during the preview. I assume the concrete moving is the bloater. Kathleen wanting to ignore that for now and search for Henry is an interesting choice...

 I'm gonna stop reading your spoilers now!! Your last sentence is interesting, they do address this in the podcast I think about her motivations versus Tommy's her lieutenant's.

Jokes aside:

In the first episode, towards the end, Tess asks Ellie if anyone is going to come after her, specifically 'mom, dad, boyfriend?' Ellie rolls her eyes at the boyfriend line. I read too much into it, didn't I? But I had wondered how they'd handle the sticky pages scene based on that.

Been a huge toning down of the darker stuff for sure. Have to say when Joel didn't break Roberts arm in the first episode I had a friend text me and say they were going to make the show milder. I told him "feck off this is hbo they don't do mild."
By the end of EP3 I was texting him admitting he got it right. I think they want a more sympathetic Joel maybe.

I think Joel not overpowering the raider is fine if I'm honest, he's a bit older in the show than the game iirc and he's a more believable mid 50's dude here than the stone cold killing machine of the game.

Its a milder telling but still a pretty good one.

I have seen Melanie Lynskey in a lot of roles and I didnt think of Rose once. She has played a pretty wide range of characters and i thought she was great in this one.
However I do get it that it is what you felt, its a tricky thing with casting.

Decent episode. This, apart from the car ambush scene, & the Bill/Frank episode last week haven’t really stuck to the source material. I wonder if this Kathleen character will have links to David? Are they related by chance?

Nice to see Henry & Sam make an appearance at the end there.

I thought it might get more violent as we got further into it. After episode 4, I've changed my mind on that. I assume it'll stay this way. I am slightly disappointed about that. People are dying off screen or their deaths are far milder than I would expect from this IP.

Yeah, Joel is 51/52 in the first game. In the show, he says he's 56. I do agree that he's more believable in the show. Complaining about his aching knees and back

It probably helps if you've seen her in more shows. I don't watch many tv shows. The only show I've seen her in is Two and a Half Men. I can't help but see Rose in her, but I guess that's a me problem. I'm hoping that changes in the next episode!

her breakout role was in Heavenly creatures, based on a true story. Melanie plays a teenage girl who murders her own mother so of course I have known her since that role. Casting is a bugger, whenever I see Russel Crowe these days all I see is Russel Crowe even though he has been a pretty good actor for a long time.

I saw her in Yellowjackets and didn’t really watch Two and a Half Men because I like comedy.

I hope they are not going to continue to shy away from violence.

I’d say that was the episode that followed the game closer than any other so far (almost scene for scene at times) and probably the one I enjoyed the least, though it was still great. So yeah, I don’t get how people can complain about them changing things up cause it keeps things so fresh.

Bella Ramsey had a seriously tough role with Ellie and she’s nailed it.

Its a tricky juggling act, the game is basically going from one shit fight to the next but it also told a great story. However we were the ones doing the fighting. For TV it would end up a bit like John Wick 3 if they followed the game closely. I do hope they can capture the horror of the violence a bit more as it progresses

Got to say that I didn't really enjoy that episode too much. The Joel and Ellie stuff was brilliant but other than that it seemed more like a set up episode for what's to come in the next one. That's a dangerous thing to do after the tender episode last week. Didn't help that it was short episode again as well. Not bad by any means because the Joel/Ellie stuff is the key thing to the entire show but it felt like the weakest episode yet.

Also don't like Kathleen at all. She's just a bland character so far? So her brother died at the hands of FEDRA, her son dies and she shoots a doctor. She has a handful of lines that tell us absolutely nothing about her and we're supposed to take her seriously as the mid-season antagonistic? Nah, sorry. Not for me.

But this is the problem; that teaser for the next episode looks like it's going to be fecking awesome so everything I've said mighy be proven to be utter bollocks.

One final thing; say it with me...

He. Ain't. Even. Hurt.

fecking say it, Pedro. I know your Joel is a no nonsense guy but ffs at least say the famous fecking line.

Weakest episode so far but I still liked it ! Dad jokes were cute, especially diarrhea one haha.

This whole segment in the game was long, they are going through it in the show very fast.

Annoyed they took out the "He ain't even hurt" line tbh.

Listening to the podcast - the beardy lieutenant with Kathleen is the voice actor for Tommy!

Them aging Joel a bit in this series to me implies they will not have as much of a time gap between the series 1 HBO content and the content hinted at for seasons 2 & 3 - namely the content from within the Last of us 2 game. TV shows hate having a large passage of time between seasons - and it wouldn't surprise me if they go for more of a cliff-hangar ending to season one and then barrel into the events of the second game in pretty quick order.

I feel this is why they are mellowing out the violence of Joel and aging him up in preparation for us to ....well I won't go into spoiler mode.

What a great episode 4 was. Bella definitely sold me on being Ellie now. It was cute seeing her tell the jokes. Loved everything about this. Even why the troops were out on the street with a hard on to kill. That moment with Ellie was actually more rough than the game. Good thing Joel is a cold mfer. Can't wait for the next episode. Henry and Sam!

My fave part of the game tonight. Excited. Hope its a slight improvement on last week.

Yeah probably the best segment in the game and they absolutely nailed it. The changes worked really well and I’m glad they kept how Henry and Sam actually died. 10/10.

Edit: actually second best after winter

Haven't watched the episode yet but im so glad you said this. It was my biggest worry after the Bill episode.

So happy they nailed it, best of the season for me but it's been a hell of a high quality season.
Looking forward to Left Behind, Winter and the finale. I do think its weird we got 2 episode here and only getting one on Winter though. But I can't complain too much, compared to my expectations this has been phenomenal.

I initially thought they’d gone too far in ramping everything up to 11 - making Henry a fugitive with a troubled past, making Sam deaf and with Lieukemia etc - but in the end the fact they kept the ending pretty much identical really worked in contrast. Another case of knowing how to adapt to the medium.

What type of infected was that in the car with Ellie then killed Kathleen?

Also, terrible actress choice for Kathleen.

Good episode though. This is great.

Clicker kid.

Nah, she was a good choice when you find out she only leads because her brother used to. She's a housewife thrust into a position she doesn't understand and focuses too much on one thing. She was out of her depth and the actress showed that perfectly.

Tremendous episode.

I actually thought the sniper scene was done much better in this than the actual game. Looked way better in the dark and more suspenseful. The big warzone that occurred between the rebels and infected after that scene was brilliant. The bloater looked excellent. I’m glad they kept it close to the source material in terms of both Sam & Henry’s deaths.
