Television Game of Thrones (TV) • The watch has ended

Yeah robin why don't you keep posting your theories and thoughts on the books in here, that always goes well.
I don't think I've talked about the books that much in here, have I? I have very little to offer on that front. I'm heavily interested in reading about them and do so quite frequently, and I love reading ASOIAF theories because I love the world Martin created, etc. but I've not actually read them and don't ever intend to, so I have no idea about how to guess or theorise about any of Martin's directions. Doesn't mean I can't join in with educated guesswork like the rest of the world, though?

So Cersei's ending obviously being a bit shit. What was the best death in the series? I think for me it's probably still Ned's, since back then I didn't know main characters would die in big TV shows.

I also still like the way Jaime stabs the Stark dude in the eye with a dagger in season 1. Jory or something?

Ned for starting it all off. Still unsure why Stannis was done off camera though (and the books have nothing to do with it).

Poor Jory. :(

I think mine's always been a contest of four: Ser Rodrik's beheading in season 2, Lord Commander Mormont being stabbed during the mutiny at Craster's in season 3, Shae and Tywin both being taken out by Tyrion in season 4, and Jon's death in season 5. Think they were all staged really beautifully. Shout out to Catelyn Stark's death as well, because the way it was carried out made it seem like the Freys had forgotten she was still there, so they just quietly slit her throat and shuffled her off stage.

God, do you remember that gap between seasons 5 & 6? I caught up with the show just as season 5 finished, and the first big theory I got plunged into discussing on Twitter was whether Stannis was actually still alive. I've always liked the cutaway from Stannis' death in isolation and understood the decision - I think it would have been a bit much to see Brienne kill Stannis when we still sympathised with him ever so slightly - but the endless arguments I had with people who were convinced he wasn't dead just turned me against it in the end. It's already happened after the final episode, with people convinced that Daenerys is actually still alive because Drogon took her to Volantis where she was resurrected.:lol:

Red Wedding for me. I was sat there with my jaw dropped and my head in my hands after it all kicked off.

Sept of Baelor was incredible too for the build to it and the music.

I actually really liked Jorah's death as well, especially when Drogon cuddled round him and Daenerys. :(

Theon's death was alright...

Oh yeah I thought Tommen's death was a bit of a shocker - visually it was right up there.

There really were so many great deaths in this show.

For what it's worth, considering Lena has said she didn't like it initially but came to appreciate it, I really liked Jaime's and Cersei's death scene. How we got to that point happened a little too quickly for me, but for them to essentially take each other down, and for everything that Cersei lived for - power, the Red Keep - to be what ultimately killed her, I think the note it ended on was really nicely judged.

How about worst deaths? Euron?

Ned is most shocking. I was waiting for a last second save. Or for the next episode to start and something stopped it, and was just shocked it didnt.
Hodors was the saddest, cos of the whole story behind him, why he says Hodor and his destiny.
Red Wedding was madness. I had no clue it was going to happen.
Viper vs Mountain is one where consequences are affected by your actions. Oberyn went all james bond villain and paid for it.

Favourite however was Sept of Baelor wildfire. The build up and music was just pure excellence. It was beautiful in a tragic way especially as Tommen followed straight after.

Both those deaths were dumb. feck I hated that episode.

Red Vipers death was terrific, loved that whole scene as you never really knew which way it would end. Red Wedding was obviously traumatic for non book readers and Hodors probably the most moving.

Yeah basically every S8 death was underwhelming and shit.

100% with you on Oberyn being the best death. The shock factor of this cocky fighter kissing his woman and strutting out suddenly screaming in agony whilst having his head crushed was peak game of thrones. The show punished character flaws, even if the character has good intentions.

It was very hard to watch, one of the few deaths on screen which has stayed with me afterwards.

Oberyn's was always one of my least favourite high profile deaths. Roose Bolton's death was kinda nothingy now I think about it as well. Ramsay's, too, come to think of it. I still like all three deaths, they just never come to mind when people ask what my favourite death was. Then again, I'm the kind of idiot who really loves the scene between Balon and Euron before the former gets tossed over the rope bridge, so what do I know really?

"I am the storm, brother. The first storm and the last, and you're in my way..." Lovely stuff.

So true.

Dany's death should've been a crushing emotional gut punch. Instead I was like "He's gonna stab her while kissing her......there it is."

How did Sansa know Ramsey's dogs hadn't been fed for seven days? She rode away before he said that.

Still haven't grown tired of the memes.

I thought Lena did another interview recently saying again that she didn't like Cersei's death. I still think it was a bizarre decision to try to 'humanise' Cersei in the penultimate episode after all the evil things she did. I suspected they would do a miscarriage scene which might have helped us sympathise with her (if that had been the intention) but in the end it was all very underwhelming. She was always insecure and jealous but I thought she'd go out like a crazed lioness, not a scared kitten. The whole 'you're not a monster' speech from Tyrion is staggering considering what she did to him all his life and the fact that she hired Bronn to murder him and Jaime a few weeks earlier.

I thought they tried to garner more sympathy for Cersei, from us, with the walk of shame rather than the last season.

I miss Bobby B. He was great in retrospect...

He really did keep the peace. Heck, his idea of getting rid of all Targs wasnt without reason...

Decided, although these are the two best ones, ill go with the Night King as my fav music from GoT Im sure I listen to it at least once a day

The best death was probably Rickon Stark for me, in terms of fuelling the thirst for revenge. That leads to the most satisfying death being Ramseys, getting mauled by his own dogs.

Stupid Rickon. Swerve you little twat!

Qyburn’s death was the most hilarious.

Their approach with Cersei was always a bit bizarre in that respect - they consistently loved having her do awful things but then would simultaneously use her motherhood to try and redeem her. I mean, I get that it's a show with morally grey characters who can't be defined as good or evil, but there's points which go past redemption and if you have someone as evil as she often was then being a mother isn't enough to make her seem somewhat okay.

Actually this death was fecking brilliant:
