Television Game of Thrones (TV) • The watch has ended

Would love more character assassinations here. All the remaining good guys turning evil. Gilly and Sam at the nerd library plotting how to burn down the entire Westeros.

I'm rewatching episodes 4 and 5 before the finale.

Knowing about what comes next, Daenerys' character development is so much more obvious.

"They should know who to blame when the sky falls down on them."

The turn in her characterisation is really clear to see.

“mercy is our strength”

“mercy is our strength”

She developed after uttering that line.

She lost her trust in Tyrion and Viserys, her best friend died, her child died, her most loyal advisor died, half her army died, her love forsook her, and her attempts to earn the love of the Westerosi were ultimately futile.

If you're going to go back in time, you'd might as well go all the way and say that being a Queen is out of character for a scared little girl sold to Khal Drogo.

It's the same episode

That's literally hours before she murdered everyone

Behave

I'm not falling for your obvious WUM
You're trying to argue the case of rationality for a mad woman.

Your sister knows how to use her enemies' weaknesses against them.
That's what she thinks our mercy is: weakness.
- I beg you, my queen-- - But she's wrong.
Mercy is our strength.
Our mercy towards future generations who will never again be held hostage by a tyrant.
She's ripping out the Lannister influence "root and stem" in order to show "mercy towards future generations who will never again be held hostage by a tyrant." She's mad enough to believe that she won't be a tyrant herself, and that she's making the rational choice to killi in order to achieve that.

Again, mass murderers throughout history have done similar things in order to start their empires from scratch.

It's psychopathy, not logic.

Preparing for the finale by watching the South Park GoT trilogy now - seems appropriate for this season...

Dante&Dante
The Jeffrey Dahmer character in that movie made no sense. He kept doing illogical things.

I'm not arguing rationality, which is what so many seem to be demanding. I'm agreeing with the irrationality of the character.

You can repel pretty much any counter-argument with that logic though.

I don't believe that she is totally irrational. If anything she's shown multiple times that this is not the case. She's gone against her own judgements multiple times for the 'good of the people' and literally a few scenes after saying "Mercy is our strength" she massacres everybody. That's not down to anything other than lazy storytelling/rushed writing.

You're bending the narrative to agree with your own point.

It will be shit again
Some will get angry
The rest will get angry at the angries
All will argue for weeks, using graphs and foreshadowing clips, how a throne made from iron can/cannot bear the weight of a 30 tonne dragon

How about Thanos showing mercy to the living beings of the universe by killing half of them?

It was clearly defined that his intention from the start was to wipe out half of the universe though. Not exactly the same thing.

Her goal was to rule and from the start, we've also heard numerous times that she's not going to be like her father etc.

She's been warned off being like her father numerous times by Varys, Selmy, Jorah and Tyrion (despite initially wanting to be brutal on several occasions). The first 3 are dead and her faith in Tyrion is all but lost. All that Daenerys has left to lean on are her baser instincts.

Daenerys' true freefall into madness starts in 08x04 with Jorah's funeral, John being lauded for winning the war while she gets ignored, and then John spurning her. There's about 2 hours' worth of story-telling (including Missandei's death) before the razing of King's Landing. That's the length of a feature film.

It's the fact that she chooses the better option that makes me question her level of 'madness'. It also shows that she is capable of rational thought no?

She has the rationality to curb her impulses and follow 'wiser' individuals. It's the inconsistency that I don't like and to just cover it up by saying "Yeah well, shes mad..." doesn't sit well with me and is rushed/poor writing as I previously said.

For what its worth, I'm not arguing against her actually going mad (I also thought it was headed that way, It was confirmed to me the moment you saw her face when Jon told her who he really was) I just question the sudden onset and ferocity of it.

The way I see it is that we've had almost 70ish hours of her trying to get what she wanted and in some degree maintaining some level of integrity. I don't really believe anyone she had previously sentenced to death etc was 'innocent' but that's not the debate here. For them to just pull the rug out from underneath that so suddenly, I understand to a degree but I do not agree.

Enjoy the last episode anyway, I'm off to watch it now :)

There's nothing wrong with not liking it. I'm not going to tell you you're wrong for having an opinion.

My only argument is that the narrative is fully formed, not that it's perfect.

If I disagree with people who are wrong, I'll inevitably wind them up. That doesn't mean I should avoid arguing for correctness.

Nothing I've said is beyond the pale.

The echo-chamber amongst certian internet fans makes it difficult for them to escape the cult-like thinking of everything being either the best ever or the worst ever. That becomes an issue for them when they ignore the obvious. And seeing as this is an discussion forum, those obvious miscomprehensions make for debate.

Fair enough, it's almost there. Just slightly undercooked.

anyone else looking forward to the post-game meltdown in here more than the finale?
