Television Game of Thrones (TV) • The watch has ended

No. Don't. It's stupid.

There should be three levels:

1. Not watched since the episode aired in the US - these people should stay out
2. Watched the latest episdoe but want to avoid speculation/trailers - these people should be able to openly discuss
3. Watched and want to discuss speculation/spoilers - these people should be able to discuss in spoilers tags

For some moronic reason, this thread is now for:
  • Category 1 to enter but not read anything because it's all in spoiler tags
  • Category 2 to avoid beause EVERYTHING is in spoiler tags so you can't open anything
  • Category 3 to have a free-for-all
That leaves me fecked because I've always followed the rules and kept myself in category 2.

For the last 8 years, I've watched GoT but avoided spoilers/trailers/etc. But now, I can't participate in this thread anymore because it's impossible to know what I'm able to read or not.

The thread is ruined. It's almost impossible to discuss any episode without getting trailer/book speculation spoiling everything.
Spoiler tags for episodes that have been aired are gone. Spoilers now should only be for future speculation and trailers.

It's not just that because D&D have written some cracking lines of their own and shown that they are excellent writers, they just seem like they've stopped caring. They've created some great scenes from scratch. Tywin and Arya scenes in Harrenhall for starters, which weren't in the books. Same goes for Catelyn talking about Jon when he was a sick baby and wishing he was dead, the whole Ramsay "rescuing" Theon, the Hound with his chickens and it goes on and on. There's even a few lines that D&D rewrote that are better or snapier than what we get in the books. A good example is when Tyrion talks to Tywin regarding Jaime. in the show it goes something like "we have our differences, Jaime and I. He's braver, I'm better looking" whereas Martin just makes a height joke.

Martin is still King, but D&D have never been hacks. I just think that they don't care. That and the first two episodes this season were written by the same guy who wrote Eastwatch - arguably the worst episode of the show since The Bad Poosy one. Which was written by two useless bastards called Daniel Weiss and David Beni......shit.

My point still stands dammit!
Hehe.

I get that the dialogue isn't as strong as in previous seasons, but I'm struggling to see how it could be. The strength in Martin's writing largely comes from political intrigue, and as we're all but done with that now, the final season was always going to be weaker. If we wanted that level maintained we could almost do with another season. It's all about the final battle now and that's ok; we spent 7 years leading up to it. Still some decent lines in this episode though. Tormund made me giggle, as did The Hounds line about chucking Beric over the wall.

Good they were utterly stupid and left regular watchers like myself feeling like Melisandre (royally fecked).
I agree I complained on the day that they were enacted. Mostly because I stayed away from the thread until I watched it not knowing that they had been enacted. I agree though that it was rough on people who don't want to read theories so wouldn't touch spoiler tags. For me as long as the theory isn't based on an actual leak I don't mind reading them.

Can promise you it doesn’t happen. You’ll be pleasantly surprised I think.

So many exciting things to come. Next week is fecking incredible but this week was an excellent episode, reminding us all of the characters original traits and where they started.
Unless you already watched it, you cannot promise anything

Johns gonna have to kill Dany isn’t he :( She’s gonna get mad with rage that he bent the knee and went back on his promise while he attempts to become the rightful king. He’ll probably try convince her to rule with him, but i can see her going crazy in the end, especially if he turns one of her dragons against her. While she tries to exert her authority over him and the entire kingdom he’ll have to kill her to end it.

At the end of it all John will denounce his right to the throne and take back his place of lord commander at the wall and, as a guess, instead of handing down his claim to the throne to Sansa he’ll disband it back to the seven separate kindoms for them all to live happy ever after for a few hundred years.

I think Jon is going to have to kill Dany. She’ll go a bit too far.
You been reading my material? :smirk:

I loved the second episode. So much foreshadowing and most of all what I felt was setting things up for some serious heartbreak to come.. I. E. People who either love or respect one another being ripped away from each other by death. By the time the show is done we might be done with it too.

[Insert joke about your reading material]

It certainly the theory that makes most sense. It fits the Azor Ahai/Prince That Was Promised prophecy the neatest. Cersei, up until now has been the heir apparent to the mad king (her son too), but the show has gone to great lengths to paint Dany as losing her marbles in recent episodes - something we are told happens with half of Targs.

At this stage there's been so much foreshadowing and false dawns that anything can happen.

So where was the ice king in the final scene?

Has he gone to King's Landing because he feels his homies can take care of Winterfell?

I love how subtext is now just spoken as accompanying dialogue, makes it much easier to follow what is happening:
Bran: "I am the memory of the world and he wants to kill me"
Fat Sam: "Ah that's what like death actually is: the death of memory"
Jon Snow: "Enter Jon Snow stage left"
I thought that was a really jarring moment of dialogue. It felt so forced

He's probably hanging back with the Dragon I'd imagine.

Why follow an army slower than Mata when he has a dragon? That's not very efficient. If he wants to take over the entire known world before winter is over he needs to get a move on. Following those zombies every step of the way is pointless.

really enjoyed that episode. It felt very necessarily before the battle to come. Brienne getting knighted, almost shed a little tear in that scene.

Great episode to setup the big battle next week

Really enjoyable episode, proper calm before the storm feel.

I got major pre-Helm’s Deep vibes as well, the whole thing made me nervous for next week

This could be the biggest thing they do in their entire life/career and you think they don't care how they finish it?

I was just on You Tube and there was a video saying leaked scenes episode 3 so it might be wise steering clear.

I only saw the title and hot tailed it out of there so I don't know how true they were being but I'd rather not take the risk. They Spoiled the Arya v Brienne fight scene last season for me so I'm being careful.

Agreed. Built the tension very nicely.

Not at all, but I think after nine years they're burning out and want to move onto other projects. Pulling that out of my arse obviously but the writing has gone downhill.

I almost shed a year as well, except there was no almost about it. The dog thought United had lost again.

May also be pressure from HBO, they have to satisfy a new audience since the show went super mainstream, the budget has gone up the last two seasons but the number of episodes has gone down - there are a lot of characters and a lot of stories they’ve needed to get through in the 9 episodes we’ve seen since the beginning of season 7 so it’s no surprise some of it has felt rushed compared to before.

Of course if it was their decision to cut the usual number of episodes down then I’d say they deserve criticism for that but somehow I imagine that decision was made by those that fund the show, not wrote it.

Can't remember, do we ever know what happened to uncle Benjen? Why didn't he became a "slave" to the night king and retained his own free will?

These two episodes could have been condensed in half a episode imo. Time is running out and the plot isn't progressing.

So Hermione, I mean Arya. Body double or legit? I need to know for a friend.

Really enjoyed that episode. Can't wait for next week. They filled the battle a few miles up the road from my house and there were there for months so should be epic.

The montage with the music was a clear reference to a similar-ish scene in RoTK

It reminded me of the scene where Pippin is singing and Faramir charges Osgiliath. Also the whole episode had that pre Helm's Deep vibe, although here they had 300 characters to show instead of 5 or 6 in the lotr film.

Yeah, I posted the video. The director has also said he took inspiration from LoTR too.

Clearly one for whores, brothels and battles then? The best parts of the entire show are the relationships and little additions.
No, I thought the dialogs were just pointless and badly written. Even the Mountain's "quote of the episode" you could see miles away.

My most favourite is how D×D have neutered all the most interesting relationships; relationships previously fraught with tension, begrudged affection and character.
Arya and the Hound
Jamie and Brienne
Jamie and Cersei
Dany and the rock man
Ice King and Bran
Ice King and Entropy
How can you not adore the introduction of such lovey dovey reunion moments that would grace the most mawkish Hannah Montana denouments. D-D have single handedly eradicated trauma from the world and I thank them.

Tolstoy speaks of art as a reflection of shared experience, emotional infection and a source of comfort for traumatic experience. But DD are better because they are like feck that make it all cool as feck and then high five the audience.
