Does this show really deserve having the joint* highest ever rating on IMDb? I know it's good but is it THAT good? The best show of all time?

I really want to start a new series but I'm not really into this genre (never got that into LOTR either). Could be swayed if this is as good as people say!

I was skeptical at first too as I'm not into LOTR or that type of stuff either but I really like this, it really is great.
 
I hope it turns out that Daenerys wasn't flown to safety by Drogon but had actually just ingested vast quantities of acid -- the season ends with the camera focusing in on a mental ward and Daenerys just saying "But I'm the mother of Dragons, damnit".

It's the best thing I've seen on TV & it's amazing, particularly when watched without knowing what's going to happen.

Me neither mate, GoT is different. Not sure it deserves to be the top rated show on iMDB, for me nothing touches The Wire :p

Don't put too much stock into IMDB ratings. A lot of really poor stuff receives high ratings, a lot of great movies/shows receive poor ratings. The voting system on there hasn't really been reliable in the last 5-10 years. It's now grossly inflated and massively prejudiced.

It's pretty good. I'm not a LOTR fan either and I really enjoy this.

For sure. Big bang theory is rated like 8.5, and I'm not exaggerating when I say I genuinely can't think of a worse show that I've seen.
 
Game of Thrones and Lord of The Rings are very different beasts. They have as much in common with Shakespeare's works as they do with each other.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand has a rating of 8.7 despite being utterly useless. That's .1 off Deadwood.

TV ratings are generally inflated -- an 8 for a TV show is probably the equivalent of a 6.5-7 for a film. Mainly because fans of TV shows are generally more blind/less sceptical of what they watch; more brand loyalty.
 
They both have swords and kings and magic. Other than that, there's very little they share in common. Certainly not in terms of storyline or character motivations.
 
Cheers for all the replies! Will definitely be starting soon. Just finished off Sons of Anarchy, will watch GoT after charging through the first two seasons of Peaky Blinders. This'll be my summer show!
 
Just figured out how to plug my headphones into my TV so I can watch this on Sky Atlantic without waking others up. I'm a genius. Or not.
