Armagh looked very, very impressive today in winning 3rd Ulster title on the trot. Donegal d'ont look too bad either.
I must say, I think I'll jump ship & go for Armagh to collect Sam in Sept. !
I dont think Armagh looked great. I think what we saw was a young Donegal team bottle it. They needed to stretch Armagh and keep the ball while running them all over the pitch in the same way Laois played Tyrone. Donegal will do ok via the back door with maybe a quarter final or semi final on the cards for them. I can see a lot of the better teams exposing francie Bellew soon.

Replay for Cork and Kerry. I liked the way that Billy Morgan said of the Anthony Lynch sending off afterwards that he didnt want to do an Arsene Wenger but that he genuinely didnt see it.
Kerry will do cork in the replay. What happened with the umpires at the end? Square bleedin ball my hole! :D

Yeah Cork were a bit unlucky not to win. Kerry should win the replay alright. Armagh look the most likely to win the All Ireland this year although theyre clearly not as good as they used to be.

Shite match...we had chances to put it beyond ye...couple of missed frees by Bryan Sheehan...and Gooch is very sudued, which is a pity. No ball going into our forwards, as per Tipp and Waterford.

Didn't see the square ball, the Cork lads near us were overjoyed...until the umpire did his thing...very funny all the same.

The wind was crucial, although you wouldn't have thought it.

Best laugh was when Paul Galvin got a clout in the head and went down...about 10,000 corkies yelling 'Get up Galvin, you fecking Ronaldo'.

Kerry to win, hopefully, the replay.

In fairness Cork had a couple of good goal chances too. Yeah Kerry will probably win the replay alright and could win the All-Ireland as the standard this year isnt anything special compared to recent years.

didn't see the Cork/Kerry game as I was at Croker watching the Dubs easy win against Offaly, whats up in the kingdom ? I was down in Kenmare last week and there was nothing but pessimism from the Kerry folk like they knew it was over, are they a one man team right know, ie the Gooch, as when he has a mare the rest of the team have one too ?

wouldn't be too despondent though as they have an easy one in the qualifiers and once they reach the quarters Kerry will be a different animal

Its time I Chirped in and told you all to fear Westmeath. In Desmond Dolan we have the best player to grace a football pitch since Maurice Fitz.

Congrats to the Dubs. Nothing better then to see the Biffos get well and truely beaten.

In fairness to our non-Irish posters who may wander in here and not be familiar with Irish terms of endearment,

Why would non-Irish posters come here?
Was at the Leinster final yesterday, great second half from Dublin.

feckin hell it was, they actually just steam rolled past offaly, although that probably highlighted offaly's ineffectiveness more than anything.

As for the rebels, I see us getting to the semi's and no further. Good team but Kerry were no real test if we're all honest, not a shadow of their former selves.

The hurling will be another story though, 3 in a row!

this media over-hyping of the Dublin team is pissing me off

vomit-inducing comments like " a capital win will be great for the GAA" must also piss off my country cousins

if the media really want the Dubs to win why do they heap so much pressure on them ?

how can a team that started of the championship with odds of 10-1 suddenly be 2-1 favourites after only three games the first of which they were almost beaten by rank outsiders Longford ?

"On their day" this Dublin team WILL beat anybody !............ but they have an old proven achilles........CONSISTENCY !...... and without it, along with their recent "track record", it's impossible to have full confidence !.......But no doubt, they are the best team, so far.

PS
; As an Ulster man, I must say, I think Ulster has slipped a little, while there seems to be a massive swing towards Leinster !

Thats because all Ulster teams do is hand pass the fecking ball! The style is being faded out by the bigger hard hitting Munster and Leinster teams!

Jackie Healy Rae, Bomber Liston, Ogie Moran, Mikey Sheehy, Ger Power, Maurice Fitzgerald, Dick Spring, Charlie Nelligan, Jack O Shea, Mick Galwey, Paidi O Shea, Keane 16, Pat Spillane, are you listening Pat Spillane, your boys took one hell of a beating.

No I was clearly makin a point that us Munster men are harder hitting and better to watch:D from a pure footballin perspective! I just don't enjoy the way football has gone in Ulster. If I wanted to see someone handpassing the ball all day long i'd watch handball! Nothings better in a football match then a midfielder thumping a high ball into a big full forward and a contest for possesion between the full back and the full forward! Or even a nice low and hard ball into a fast corner forward. This whole idea of handpassing it over peoples heads and not being able to kick the feckin ball annoys me more then anything! And I will say it has been very effective for Ulster teams over the past few years and i'm not saying this is the only dimension to their game either!

I will say i'm from a hurling county(and its a much better sport) but I do take a keen interest in the football championship and I do think the likes of Kerry,Dublin and even Limerick and Cork play a more appealing style of football compared to the way alot of the big Ulster teams have played recently!

Ulster had their golden era for the past few years but its about time the proper footballing counties get back in the driving seat.

I think its a pleasure to watch matches like Dublin and Kerry or the big one Dublin and Meath!Even Mayo,Galway,SLigo play proper football.

I know you'll probably disagree with me and theres no doubt that Tyrone and Armagh have been tremendous over the past few years but it has come to a point where they can't go any further and their time in the sun is up!

Bitter, very bitter - still reeling after your first round exit? And as for shouting for the Dubs against anyone..very sad.
Despite Cluxton's kung fu kick, Dublin were by far the better team..no debate there.

Have you ever seen the quality of football the likes of Fermanagh, Monaghan, Cavan, Down etc. typically play....absolutely beautiful to watch...as you might say "the way it should be played ! Alas, how much silverware have any of those teams collected in Ulster alone recently. Fermanagh are still left in the All-Ireland, and if you get a chance to watch 'em, then do !...football in it's purist form !
Footballers are getting faster & fitter, even professional like. To put it simply, if they are fitter, why not get forwards to defend as well as attack & defenders to attack as well as defend....... and that is exactly what Tyrone & Armagh have been doing in the past few years.
Yes, we all love the "catch & kick" etc., but because of the evolving process of fitness levels this will never return unless some drastic rule changes are introduced.

You have mentioned Kerry, Galway & to a lesser extent Cork !........ They have all adapted the blanket defence style in the last year or so !....... Obviously this has escaped your attention.... they are still adopting to it !

No don't get me wrong! They all play fabulous football just not the way its meant to be played:D ! And its true players are now more fit,I daresay as fit as some premiership soccer players if not alot of them! But the days of holding position and putting a good boot through the ball are gone and its all about short passing....I may have an old fashioned opinion but I don't like to see football played this way!

the hurling quarter finals this weekend. Hoprefully Cork will be too strong for Limerick. Kilkenny and Galway has the makings of a great and close match(if its anywhere near as good as last year it'll be well worth watching). Tipp and Waterford on Sunday should be very close as well.

Pessimism is the county way. If you believed everyone down here, you'd swear we were lucky to ever win anything, ever.

Something isn't right though.....mental problems methinks, just not up for it...and also we aren't getting enough ball into the forwards...and when we do, Gooch is wheeling everything....and Mike Frank should be starting....and Decky Sullivan has been marked absent. Cork did the northern thing...jesus...you'd think we'd know how to deal with that...good long early ball into Eoin Brosnan, who should be a lot further forward, or let Darren O'Sullivan stretch his legs and run them.

The Longford match will be telling.

Absolutely agree with you. Unfortuneately, if you wanna win Silverware nowaday's there is no choice. But do not blame Ulster teams, they along with Connacht have spent most of their GAA lives living in the shadows of Munster & Leinster.... 29 out of 121 All-Irelands in football speaks for itself.
Nowadays you must be ahead of the pack to succeed, and that is what Ulster teams have done in the past few years!...and can you blame them !

One consolation, due to the continual developement of the game, some one some day will come up with an effective new tactic, that will replace or negate the Blanket Defence.
As previosly posted, I think there is a slight swing back towards Leinster ! Mind you, the Dubs are looking like champs, but there is one team they would not fancy meeting, (if it is deemed !).... Armagh !
Enjoy the rest of the campaign !

It was perhaps the best match of the year i thought. When they met in Munster Waterford were understrengh and missed a lot of chances which wasnt so much the case yesteday(apart from Flynn only coming on as a sub). Waterford from 5-15 are very strong, the full back line to me doesnt seem the strongest, i bet ye'd love to have a player like Sherlock who cant get in the Cork team, and we'd love to have a couple of yere forwards. It has the makings of a great match but on the evidence of Waterfords games against Tipp and Galway and Corks last 2 games then id make Waterford very marginal favourites.
Cork probably produced arguably their worst performance in the Championship since 2002. Limerick were quite dirty at times. But Cork will surely improve. Kilkenny were brilliant in the first half although scored one very soft goal and Gallway missed a few good goal chances. Too easy for Clare. Should be 2 good semis, with Kilkenny to win narrowly and Cork and Waterford too close to call, i wouldnt be surprised to see it go to a replay.

Yeah I'd have to agree it was a cracker.Tipp missed their fair share of chances though but we always looked the better team.

You can never really make a Waterford team marginal favorites because to be honest you never really know which team is going to turn up but I must say I have been waiting for an All Ireland final all my life!My father was at the match the last time we won one back in 59 and i'd love more then anything to sample an All Ireland final with my own county involved!I've followed Waterford year in year out for a very long time now and I feel our time is now.....hopefully!

That air of confidence is finally in the team which may helf us overcome our Croke Park hodoo.

You travelling to the match?

I probably won't be going. I was at the games against Clare and Tipp. If Cork don't win the All Ireland then i would like to see Waterford win it as because you say they havent won it for such a long time. If Kilkenny win it then they go 1 behind Cork. It has the makings of a cracker. The Munster final in 2004 was one of the best game sof hurling i can remember and Waterford did very well to win considering Mullane got sent off early in the second half. If Waterford were stronger in the full back line and golakeeeping department since 2002 then i do theink yed have won at least 1 All Ireland.

Following from todays football games Longford and Galway both fell by the wayside. Kerry disposed of Longford with a Brosnan hattrick of goals and looked impressive. Galway were beaten by the 1 point. That means the Dubs will take on Westmeath while Kerry play Armagh in the quarter finals. Kerry Armagh should be a cracker.

Kerry / Armagh is sure to be a very interesting game, since their listless display in losing the Munster final a lot of people have been writing Kerry off but I wouldn't be so sure, a wounded Kerry could turn out to be very formidable, they still have top notch players and a pedigree second to none but will need to play to their utmost capability to see off the enormous threat that Armagh will pose, if Kerry beat the northerners they will become overnight favourites to win Sam

Yeah definitely agree with that. Armagh are probably the most physically strong side left in the championship. I fancy kerry here because they owe Armagh one.

I'm only sorry I didn't put money on Kerry for todays game, superb performance by them and as I've earlier said beating Armagh will make them championship favourites, best display in the championship by any team this year

Im happy someone stood up to Armagh and dismissed them as much physically as with footballing class. For me its the end of the blanket defense tactics.

you're probably right, no Northerners in the last four, who'd have thought that , it can only be good for the game that pure football finally wins out against brute force

Great game between Cork and Waterford on Sunday. Cork once again showed their resolve in coming from behind. Hopefully the 3 in a row now. Hard luck to Waterford. The Cork footballers were fortunate to win but at least they got there.

can you summarise it all for me: Cork made it to the All Ireland Hurling final?
who do they play? what's the latest on the football?

I looked at the sports pages on the examiner but couldn't find a decent summary of where we're at now.

Cork beat Waterford by 1-16 to 1-15. They play the winners of Kilkenny and Clare who play next Sunday. The final is on the 3rd of September.

In the football last weekend(quater finals) Kerry beat Armagh by 3-15 to 1-13 and they now play Cork after Cork beat Donegal by 1-11 to 1-10. This weekend Dublin play Westmeath on Saturday and Mayo play Laois on Sunday in the remaining quarter finals with the winners playing each other. Cork play Kerry on the 20th and the second semi final is on the 27th. The final is on the 17th of September.
