Gaa 2012

The problem with Brolly's point is that he seems to only place value in an All-Ireland that's won the hard way or, more specifically, by a point or two.

He said that Kerry couldn't handle it when teams went toe-to-toe (or words to that effect) with them. That's wrong. Mayo and Cork went toe-to-toe with them and were annihilated. But an annihilation on the biggest stage isn't of any merit to Brolly- you need to win in a slugfest to prove yourself.

It's a bollocks point, made by a bollocks. And Spillane made himself look like a bollocks by getting precious about it.

Exaclty. Where were the great Tyrone team the years Kerry won? They could never do back to back championships.

I have to say I don't agree. Any team that loses heavily in an All Ireland final can be an indication that they were not the second best team in Ireland.....Mayo beat Dublin in 06 in the semis but that would have been a surprise, Kilkenny beat Limerick in 2007 when Waterford were better placed to match them and Waterford themselves`caught Tipp in 08. Kilkenny won those finals by a total of 30 points. I don't think Waterford in 07 or Tipp in 08 would have succumbed to those defeats or maybe have been beaten at all.

Kerry's 3 out of 4 in the mid-2000s showed victories over Mayo by 8, Mayo again by 13 and Cork by 10. This is not simply a fact that Kerry put on a masterclass and annihilated the opposition. There has to be something missing from the opposition and I think Mayo has a mental block in Croker and Cork has has a mental block with Kerry in Croker. Tyrone lost in the QFs in both years and both teams were either lucky with the draw or sprung a surprise to beat a better team along the way.

I have heard that this Cork team wants to meet Kerry this year which indicates that they feel they are ready.

I think Brolly is right. Kerry have not won a tight final since 2000. Even in 09, there was an inevitability about the result.

Fixtures August 4/5th

All Ireland SFC Quarter Finals
Mayo v Down, Croke Park
Dublin v Laois, Croke Park

Cork v Kildare, Croke Park
Donegal v Kerry, Croke Park

I think Mayo, on paper, should have too much for Down. The Connacht final was dire but that shouldn't distract us from the fact that this Mayo team does have some good credentials. Down overachieved in 2010 and 2011 was a disappointment following the highs of the previous year. Mayo have been idle for 4 weeks and that gives Down a better chance, but I think this Mayo team is the best team out of Connacht in a decade.

Dublin, as with Donegal, have been lucky with the provincial final being only two weeks ago. Laois have improved beyond recognition and have the makings of a tough, physical team. Dublin will be massive favourites but Laois are not without a chance. Unfortunately, I can't go today but will be glued to the television.

Cork/Kildare is the toughest to call. Kildare have not shown us at all, what they are supposed to be made of. Cork haven't had to. Cork won the Munster final 5 weeks ago, but haven't had a tough match since June 10th! All things being equal, I would go with Cork and I am, but Kildare could as easily win this. I might yet change my mind. Maybe this goes to a replay?

Donegal should win. They are phenomenally different to last year in the execution of their game-plan. Last year was about containment, but McGuinness has a formidable, physical team raring to go. With no long delay since their provincial final, I think they should account for Kerry.

How Quigley get pushed around by 3 Dublin players and its ok, but when 2 Laois players tackle a Dublin players, its a free?

fecking bullshite, thats how.

That's 2 frees Laois should have scored. The game needs them to take them chances.

has Papi stopped watching or is it just poor decisions for Dublin that irk him?

Right. I'm putting the kettle on. I'll need me coffee to wind Papi properly.

O'Rourke thinks some of the Dublin frees are "odd".

I wonder if the IOC could have a look at this strange phenomenon of Dublin getting handy frees in Croker.....?

I really don't like O Gara. He's a shit Ciaran Donaghy, and he's a wanker too.

Connolly has all the talent in the world but makes some really annoying decisions/mistakes.
