Would actually be hilarious if he digs his heels in, refuses to be sold to anyone, and Barca are stuck in a position where they can't meet the wage cap or register all their new signings.

They must think that if he leaves there's some sort of loophole where they don't have to pay his missing wages. I can't think of what else it could be now.
He was on the losing end of the Europa League final against us. Maybe he never let it go.

I think this weekend we need to have a positive outcome or move on. I don’t think Barca’s money woes will end soon, so whether de Jong wants to come here or not, he won’t be forgoing his deferred salary - so this will drag on regardless.

Need to get our own house in order for start of season, badly need another midfield so need Plan B.

as long as you are happy with a tielemans / Neves midfield at 85m sure. Only players we have been linked to, possibly sangare but we have not been linked to him in any meaningful way bar a few fans, so I don’t think we will see it. Could we buy those two? Yeah but if you think either of those deals gets done fast you are beyond optimistic

Literally every sports journalist is reporting that De Jong has no intention of joining us.
So why the feck haven’t moved on? This is the most bizarre transfer saga ever.
Thats literally not true. English tier 1 journalist have said he doesn’t want to leave without settling deferred wages and Spanish journalists are not mentioning the deferred wages when they mention he doesn’t want to leave because they are Barca mouthpiece and cant risk upsetting Barca board.

If you are referencing the Sport article, then they have mentioned below things in last week.

1. He is open to move to United
2. He prefers United over Chelsea
3. He doesn’t want to join United at any cost

Either you're King Recency Bias, or it's your first summer on the forum.
How can any other transfer be worse than this one?
- Took ages to agree a fee with Barcelona
- Player kept saying he doesn't want to leave
- We agree a fee with Barcelona but apparently he doesn't want to leave
- Barcelona is now basically bullying him into joining us and he's still not here.
If he rejects us this is hands down the worse saga and will be the most embarrassing one too.

So something I've wondered for a while but never really got the chance to bring up - here seems like a good place to ask.
What ever happened to it being illegal to "tap-up" players?

Didn't Chelsea or some other club get fined for it years ago?
What makes tapping up different to what happens with players nowadays (establish that the player wants to come and even have the personal terms agreed before negotiating with the player's club)?

Clubs only speak to agents so no one bothers to complain anymore because it's impossible to prove.

theuy do as has been pointed out, it seems his contract pays more of his wage in the final years, with no provision for recovering the deferred wages if he is sold. If this was the case , it was an absolute masterstroke by barcas lawyers. The only way he gets that money is by telling barca to pay up or he stays. This is what all the bluster is over.

Hmm getting on that plane rather suggests that Xavi wont freeze him out. He's not staying put. He's not going. It's just a clusterfek for the club.

Some older Sagas took much longer like Tevez and Berbatov, Sancho took over a year to complete. Sneijder took around a decade and he still didn't sign.

The Fabregas one was almost this exact scenario, except there was zero chance Fabregas actually wanted to come, and they refused to sell too!
It was the peak of the Moyes & Woodward embarrassment era.

We are so fecked if all we're relying on is frenkies relationship with ETH to not feck him over

And? Ducker, Ornstein and Stone are absolutely reliable and they haven’t mentioned anything like that. Should we just believe negative ? Its quite clear what the hold up is and we have increased upfront money as well.

tbh they are reliable....but from our end. I doubt they have the scoop on what FDJ been saying

Some players you right for until the last second, or the next window if needed. Sancho was one, Frenkie is another. They're dream signings for positions of need. We got Sancho eventually, better late then never. Frenkie should be viewed as the same. He's a unique player, like Modrić in a lot of ways. Absolutely vital for ten hag to reach the top level. Sure there are always alternatives, but they are nothing more than place holders until we actually get Frenkie. Like I said - he's the dream signing for midfield for Ten Hag (and many fans like myself). If there was 1 midfielder i could sign, having free pick at any, he'd be right at the top of the list (along with tchouameni to be the dream partnership). Basically, you dont give up on those players. You go til you get them if they are realistic.

Thats fair enough I just hope we have a contingency plan if this ends up going south.

We’ve been poor in midfield for years and have just lost Pogba and Matic we should be signing 2 regardless in my opinion.

I get that but player refusal is absolutely bollocks story. No way our entire machinery will be involved in a deal if player has told us that he would rather die than join us. FDJ agent have said that he wants to stay to press because they are in middle of battle with Barca for deferred wage payment. Its in their interest to keep saying that. Ducker and co will report what conversation United and FDJ team had which wont be there with Barca journalist. Not a single Spanish journalist is reporting about deferred payments. Its mostly that he wants to stay which FDJ team has repeatedly told them

This is unprecedented situation and normal press briefing should not be taken as gospel. Its quite clear why Spanish and English journalist have different version and why FDJ team will feed stories of his intention to stay

Wow. If his lawyers didn't put it in writing that those increased wages were deferred wages, then he needs better lawyers.
Without knowing the intricacies around the deal, I speak here as an accountant. Any sort of clause converting the deferred wages into a “loan owed to FDJ” couldn’t work and it would defeat the intent of the restructure which was to “save wages in line with the La liga approved wage bill ratio to income” (something along those La liga lines.

From an accounting and legal standpoint, if such a clause existed whereby those wages were still owed to FDJ for, as an example, the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Barca would have needed to account for those wages - ie there would not have been a reduction in their wage bill.

Instead, they “deferred” it in such a manner that his earnings in year 1 and 2 were much less, only for his years 3-6 earnings being increased from his original base plus the “deferred earnings” from years 1 & 2. i.e. FDJ will actually only legally be due those wages over the next 4 years if his contract.

What Barca are doing by trying to sell him and not pay him those deferred wages is obviously against the spirit/intent of the agreement. FDJ (& others), helped them out when they were in a tough spot & now they’re trying to stab him in the back.

I know they owe Messi and Pique money as well but I’m not sure what those payments were for/or how they structured those agreements. Messi’s we’re loyalty bonuses or something, iirc.

Barca aren't going to pay his wages owed upfront as then others will come forward and demand the same surely?

This could legitimately be dead in the water me thinks.

I'll never cease to be surprised by how willing our fans are to be miserable.

We have an opportunity to sign a player who is absolutely perfect for the way we want our team to play. A game changer, someone we wouldn't even have considered as a possibility 6 months ago.

Because this hasn't gone smoothly we have 31,000 posts of mainly bitching and moaning from a group of people all too desperate to find something to be unhappy about, and to hate the club for.

An embarrassment to this club, and yourselves.

It’s not a master stroke by Barca - they are the one’s now saddled with a contract they want to get out of.
