this "he didn't want to join us!" BS is going to linger forever. Already tired of it, but hey, that shite generates clicks.

I don't see why not so long as pay/insurance and such can get sorted.

It bugs me we aren't hearing anything about such trigger mechanisms.

Seems to me Barca can essentially wait until they absolutely 100% have to register players which is likely a month away or so.

De Jong is obviously in no rush. With his past and future earnings at stake priority 1 urgency is protecting that.

The worst part to me is there's an obvious solution: tie future instalments to Barça honouring their dues with FDJ. Essentially, use them as escrow.

That not being put in place tells me Barça really expect to get concessions off FDJ or us to spend more overall (in fee, wages or structure) to get it done quicker.

We are the only ones in a rush here.

I don't think we are the only ones in a rush.
We can just walk away to talk with ETH 2nd choice if ETH agree to do so.
And God knows any other clubs can help Barce to offload FDJ this summer. If Barce cannot sell FDJ and refuse to pay cut, then all new signings cannot be registered. It is a huge disaster for their finance and on pitch performance. Just imagine, you keep a one who will not play 100% for you and stock a lot who cannot play. But, you need to to pay them a lot of money.

It'll stick around forever now, even if he joins. It'll be a stick used to beat him with. People have set their stall out as being against this transfer and they won't be swayed

This transfer is absurd to be honest, have we not learnt from past mistakes? We shouldn’t be signing players who don’t wanna join - and in this case he really, really doesn’t.

These are the steaming hot fresh takes I come here for. I cannot believe nobody has thought of this yet.

According to the respectable Spanish publication "Sport" when Barca told De Jong that they've accepted a bid from United, he opened his buttcheeks and farted "no" in D Minor

Frenkie is a unique and a Special One and worth every penny then. A quiet fart would be a C minor. The loud one is C Major.

I don't think there's anything wrong with having to work hard to convince a player to join us - that is not really the issue for me.

The key issue is, does the player not want to join for footballing, personal or financial reasons?

'Personal reasons' worries me. We have seen when players' families are not happy, it is generally reflected in their performances and commitment (see Cavani, ADM)

'Financial reasons' worries me. We shouldn't be throwing well-above market-rate salaries at players to get them to join. This is a recipe for disaster and breeds resentment and disharmony in the squad and/or creates issues with the wage structure.

'Footballing reasons' doesn't worry me so much, in fact, I'd be pleased if FDJs reason for not wanting us to come is he thinks he's more likely to win trophies and play in bigger competitions at Barcelona. That shows his motivations for playing football are in-line with what I would want in my squad,. I don't want players who will willingly join a weaker side, playing in lesser competitions, just because the money was good!

If that's the reason and ETH can sell FDJ on his vision, his goals and make him believe he can achieve his footballing goals at OT, then there's absolutely nothing wrong with that at all - it should be encouraged!

Are there not other midfielders available we could sign that might even be better than FDJ?
This transfer is a mess with the loose ends to tie up between Barca and FDJ.
I’ve always thought about that but I’m struggling to think of a player that can do what de Jong can. De Jong would be the perfect midfielder for our new style of play and he can pretty much do everything… he can create from deep, good at tackling. This signing along with martinez and eriksen will transform the way we play completely.

Would it? Or is it just a tweet to prompt twitter interaction on someones page!

Doesn't matter what he tweets he'll get interaction.

But yes, I'd imagine if he was not part of the tour it could be gauged as a strong indicator that Barca are indeed trying to force him out, but FDJ doesn't want to leave minus his money.

This post is absurd. It’s like you literally haven’t read this thread in the last few pages. Painfully obvious what is going on and yet people still refuse to understand.

Just had a quick nose in the Barca online shop.

FDJ shirt still available (21).

Kessie, Raphinha and Christensen shirts shown as available, but no numbers for them yet.

Not according to reliable UK journalists
Thats the problem... you're listening to reliable UK journos.

We all know those that need to be listened too are the unreliable, shite spouting Spanish sources. They're the only ones who know the real truth!

I read a lot that Barcelona have to sell De Jong to register new players to their La Liga Squad (Kessie, Raphina and Christiensen).

If they fail to do that, those 3 players would still be on their payroll but just not able to take part in La Liga, right ?

What is to stop them from removing De Jong from their La Liga Squad to insert those 3 players in?

Is there a clause in the contract that the player is free to go to leave on a Free if they do not register him to that?
La Liga.

You are not understanding the mechanism. For Barcelona to register new players for La Liga they need to comply with certain financial requirements.

They need FDJ out to do so and, only then, will the newbs get registered.

Problem is this isn't required until the end of July so we basically miss out on him having a proper preseason because we deal with absolute feckwits.

If we do get him he going to have one hell of a point to prove. He's been flung behind the bed like a soggy sock.

To be fair, it could've been:

1) Frenkie informs Ten Hag he has no interest in playing in Europa League and loves Barca
2) Barca needs to sell to realize their plans and encourages United to submit a bid
3) Barca uses the bid as an excuse to push Frenkie out the door
4) Frenkie reluctantly accepts he has to 'downgrade' while there's a chance
If that were true we would have a massive problem: our manager being an imbecile.

Fantastic post and personally I think you could argue a case for all 3 as reasons for him not wanting to join us.

Financial reasons (Barca monies due)
Personal reasons - No doubt happy in Sunny spain along with his partner having bought a new home as recent as April for €5m
Football reasons - Poor structure, changing managers often causing an extended period of being unsuccessful.

I agree with most of what you say, however if the financial reason is FDJ posturing/holding his ground until Barca pay him his deferred wages. Then I have no issue.

Barca are at no risk of us pulling out.

FDJ though... could be Winston Bogarde all over again

Ya man.

I understand he needs to make certain stance to get his money from Barca and he should. But this definitely gonna stick and doesn't bode well for his new club. If he does come, there will be huge (avoidable) pressure on him put in world class performances. Otherwise the media and fans gonna have a field day and that can't be good for anybody.

I really like him as a player and would love for him to join us but it shouldn't be a happen at all cost scenario where we end up over-paying for an unhappy player coming into a new league.

Id wish we could just move on. We get our name drag into this unnecessary saga when we should be optimistic with new manager and new management. Are there seriously no other targets that we can get at the 65-85 mill price? Feck Lever FC. Really, feck them for getting us into this.
