Pretty sure you can't approach a player to discuss personal terms without the permission from the selling club can you?
Clubs usually know whether their terms will be accepted beforehand as they'd likely have a quiet word with their agents and say this is what we're likely to offer, or the agent will say this is what we'd likely want

a) I can live without having a certain player. If somebody else sign them, so what? I used to get annoyed when I was about 10 years old, but it doesn't bother me now.
b) I just want to treat everything as though it is possible and not try to shut down any negative news. I've been here many times, and sometimes that negative news is the truth.
