We should just end negotiations after Laportas comments, explain the same to De Jong. Put the ball back in Barcas court if they want to reopen negotiations. Our appeal has weakened further in the last 24 hours with Ronaldo now wanting to leave. We dont want to chase this player and not get him as that means the price for lesser talented targets will inevitably increase now.

What a try hard post, ''please promote me, please promote me''.
Weird flex given he is already a full member.

Good luck with your promotion though, posts like this will nail it every time.

If he takes a pay cut to stay, I'm guessing his wages are going to be drastically lowered. How much do they have to slash from his wages?

Are these economic levers really that good for them short term that they can apparently spend 60m on Raphinha, and register 2 more players as well as keep FdJ AND renew Dembele??

They reported he would have to take a pay cut to come here didn't they?
That's a slightly different situation as Nike reportedly pay a portion of his wages which they obviously wouldn't if he came over to an Adidas team.

But again, we've done the same thing and said Ronaldo isn't for sale and we expect him to stay. People are still convinced that he's going though

My opinion is we shouldn't reach for the top players yet and build up to that with a great coach, which hopefully we've got and in time get the top echelon players when we're approaching a force again. Otherwise it's a adm vicious circle we're going to be in. With our new manager left with no chance.
A club like Newcastle will be doing a similar thing.

What i dont understand is why we had all our eggs in one player's basket again as if we had not learnt our lessons from previous transfer windows.

Nothing De Jong has ever said publicly has ever indicated anything other than he wanted to stay.

And if we were not sure of his intentions, sorting personal terms in advance as other clubs (Liverpool) do would give a clear indicator where things are headed. But there has been zero news of any approach on that score which, if true, is hard to understand.

Some of us have been questioning this for weeks. Even if we were confident of landing him, you can never be sure in football. So the whole thing seems pretty crazy really.

Say what you like about Manchester United but they are world-class at briefing. Probably the best there is. Not a chance this has gone bad without them sending a brief or two out.

"Listen guys, we know you're all reeling over a lot of things and you're now being told that Ronaldo wants out, but we just thought we'd let you know that after 4 weeks of negotiation, it seems we've been tricked by those pesky Spaniards and de Jong is no longer joining either. Just thought we'd let you know. PS please spread positivity about the club on social media, buy some merchandise and get applying for tickets to see our new look team in action next year"

Now you're just being silly.

Truly shocked to see the negative Nancy’s out in force.

But the thing is what difference is a brief tonight or tomorrow going to make to a brief in a week? All we have to say is that we're moving on to alternative targets. We don't have to give any reason as to why. It wouldn't really be an issue as the journos would fill in the rest of it anyway.

As I said before though, if there was anything at all in them comments we'd have heard something from the regulars pretty damn quick as they'd be all over it. The fact we haven't is quite telling to be fair!

People seem to think the window opens as soon as the season ends. We've been working on this for 2 months, if it was dead I'm sure we'd know by now

Yeah, I’m not sweating it. He’ll come or he won’t. Barely posted in this thread in ages. If it isn’t him, we’ll get someone else. The season will roll around regardless, and we have a great coach. The world won’t end.

I had a beer with Joel Cantona once. He was telling me stories from back in the day, namely how close we were to signing Zidane. Eric wanted him, spoke to him, he’d agreed to come, and Martin Edwards vetoed it. Apparently Eric couldn’t start Martin and it was one of the reasons he became disillusioned.

Having seen how we tend to operate, I think we'll try to get the likes of Malacia and potentially another over the line ASAP, or get stories of other targets out to generate positivity, before we admit defeat here. Seems we're already in PR overdrive tonight over the Ronaldo stuff.

Would be gutted if this falls through. Been my dream midfield signing with no chance of it for a while, got to the point where I felt like we're close... so hopefully this talk is just bullshit.

It's good PR to say we've been led a merry dance over our primary target, the same night the news breaks that our player of the season wants out?

If you can't even concede this point, when it is so obvious, then I'm done with this conversation and will have you down as a club shill.
Ronaldo takes the brunt of the negativity and spotlight, what better time to have this news absorbed by a bigger story.

Because I don't agree with you I'm automatically wrong. Don't be so arrogant

To be fair though, signing Malacia isn't going to impress very many people is it? "Sorry guys, we can't get de Jong but hey we've signed Malacia!" Most will be like... who?

I just don't see anything here to say we're going to admit defeat? A few comments that you'd expect a club president to make, silence from those who are apparently in the know about things, some saying things are as they were... seems to me like nothing has changed

Not overly arsed about this one tbh, whilst I trust what EtH knows and wants I've never been overly impressed with him for all the fuss.

The only way I believe there is a real issue here would be if we start to get briefings from United about "excessive demands" or extortionate agent fees...if we see those stories being leaked to English media....then it's time to panic.

That's absolutely not how it will go down and you know it. Look at the fallout already to Laporte's comments along with the Ronaldo news. It's not arrogance, it's just too damn obvious.

Christ.

Do you think FdJ cares if Barca and Nike pay his wage or just MUFC? You're just trying to argue every point when it is obvious you are wrong.
The situation is that only United is interested in him so chances are he's taking a paycut, whether he comes here or stays there.

Stop trying to pass off your opinion as fact

Can you prove that. No.

The 'fallout'

No one of note has said a word about it

Barca have negotiated a fixed fee over the last month and a bit and now posters freaking out that this is dead....how do you people live your lives? Laporta has been in the thick of negotiations and is likely the one to have agreed the fixed fee and you just take him at face value?

Where is the BBC/Tele article saying this deal has collapsed? Where are any of the reports saying Barca pulled out because Frenkie lowered his wages? You lot seek out the worst possible position and then hammer it home as gospel and then anything contrary to that....as in the BBC saying barca agreed a fixed fee.... is just thrown aside for a doomer narrative.

I feel like every reputable news outlet would have a story up by now if the worst case scenario was happening. A lot of these reputable sources have said it’s close to happening and they would need to put out a story quick to say why it’s suddenly off, or risk losing credibility. This was like early this evening right? I don’t see any broadsheet exclusive articles just before midnight like they usually do.

All I can see from this Laporta piece is ‘WE DON’T WANT TO SELL OUR BEST PLAYERS! but our finances are totally fecked so who knows’

Which has basically been their stance throughout the entire saga. I don’t think it would have got to this point if FDJ was adamant at staying.

Exactly as I've been saying.

Tonight's comments are exactly what you expect your club president to say. Fans would be furious if he was to roll over and admit he's going. They want to appear to be strong and doing all they can to keep their best players. They know the truth is much different

You may be right, nobody knows. But if you believe that then just carry on in blissful knowledge that all is well.

Exactly! So to go full circle, how is taking a paycut a problem for him staying at Barca, as you implied? It isn't, not in our case. Because we know he wants to stay anyway, so it's no deal breaker for FdJ.

A paycut isn't enough. They need him out.
