I'm absolutely FULLY aware of their financial woes.

Again, you know the square root of sweet FA and what has or has not been agreed on June 30th. None of us do.

For Laporta to come out with such a strong statement suggests there is room for him to perhaps stay, albeit on a pay cut. Previously there was none.

Exactly there's simply no guarantees with any transfer. You control the variables which you can control i.e buying an incredibly talented player, who has experience at the biggest of stages and with whom the manager already has a great relationship.
Maximising the probability of success.

Big names have failed here, mediocre have failed here, young up and coming starts have failer here, supposedly talented under the radar signings have also failed at Man Utd.
Does that mean we should make no signings at all then? Because everyone has failed.

Do you not think if thats the case we'd have bailed on the transfer already?
We wouldn't continue with something that we knew we'd have no chance of completing, theres been many times in the past where we've briefed that we've ended interest in a player.

I love how people treat Laportas word as gospel and that all the problems Barca have are now suddenly gone and they'll be free to sign all these players they want with no further issues.

It was good while it lasted. I was afraid this would turn into Fabregas all over again and it looks like it.

First of all. A lot of the financial information is public record (including the 'levers' they activated on June 30th) and you are free to look that up yourself :)

Secondly here is a quote from Laporta saying a very similar thing about De Jong in May:

We've bought plenty of incredible talents of late, I think for me personally its more about attitude and showing you want to be here right now to get the club moving in the right direction. Alarm bells ring for me when a player is so staunchly vocal in staying put.

The whole narrative of him working with a former manager should if anything entice him to speak openly about that prospect, he hasn't.

No doubt you'll say he want to stay professional etc etc, but players these days don't show loyalty. We see it with so many players openly talking up other clubs, FDJ is doing the opposite.

Could be Ronaldo wants to leave because we lost out on FDJ. If Frenkie doesn't come and we fail to lure a midfielder of a similar level, Ten Hag will be scratching his head with McFred.

Explain how we are similar? Do we need economic levers? Do we need players to take pay cuts?

We aren’t the same and if we was we definitely wouldn’t be trying to get Raphinha and Lewandosoki. :lol:

Well the meeting only happened on June 30th, 48 hours ago. Barely been a peep out of Laporta in recent weeks over this transfer, seems quite brash to come out with this suddenly does he not?

FDJ has been talking up how happy he is staying is going on months now, quotes back in February!

Barca's issues are far from over, I wouldn't be naiive enough to think otherwise.

I love how folks ignore all the alarm bells going off right in front of them about this transfer.

If it happens I reckon it'll be against the players wishes and we won't get the best FDJ some folks think we will.

Soooo you think he should say he's happy to join United and reunite with Ten Hag, and he's excited at the prospect of working with his old manager again?
If the move breaks down and he doesn't leave, he's going to have a lot of upset people to deal with if he was talking up the prospect of leaving and how happy he is to be reuniting with ETH! Lots of players will say they're happy where they are but will move if offered. A sensible player will always say they're happy where they are and not looking to move, because if the move fails to materialise, then theres no burnt bridges and they can always turn round and say i never wanted to go!

Hang on, so you seem to think that Laporta is going to give updates on the transfer daily and tell everyone that things are going well etc? Clubs very rarely, if ever comment on ongoing transfers. It's usually left to the "sources" that reporters have to spread the info to the masses. Whether someone believes it or not is their choice. And what meeting are you on about? Are you saying the past 2 months have been imaginary? Are you saying that everything has been done in the past 2 days?

And as i said above, FDJ will always say he's happy and doesn't want to move, even if he did! No responsible, professional player will disrespect the club thats currently paying his wages! If a transfer doesn't materialise, he still has to play for his current club and join the other guys daily. If you're spouting off about how much you want to move and how much you want to join someone else, it's not going to bode well for you when you're stuck there for another season is it??

If you think more players should act like Pogba you seriously need to get a grip of yourself.
 
The Manchester are reporting United have "been dealt a major blow" with the attempt to sign Frenkie De Jong.

I think this could go either way. As I have said before dealing with Barcelona is a complete nightmare. My fear is that something has come to light to change the circumstances.

This is worse than the last transfer windows we have had.

They're just reporting on the comments and taking them at face value.
 
2 alternatives here, either there's substance in these rumours or it's complete made up BS. If there's actually been negotiations that's been dragging on this long then the club is an asbolute fecking shambles. You want a player like this without CL then simply pay up and stop negotiating half the window like clueless imbeciles.

Fergie told the media we wouldn't enter into a contract with Real Madrid over Ronaldo back in 2009, and look what happened! If you look at whats been said tonight, it looks like Laporta is building up to blaming financial restrictions for him losing his best players

Folks need to feckin engage their brains a tad here... a player can easily send out a statement akin to the below

"Of course I worked well with ETH previously at Ajax and if that happened again in the future I would be happy, but I am happy here too and there is no need to move anywhere right now as I play for the biggest / best club in the world"... yada yada.

It's perfectly acceptable that a former player compliments our current manager etc etc
 
What an absolute joke. If it's true that we've been led up the garden path by Barca only to be hung out to dry, then who can really blame Ronaldo for wanting out? It would be typical United. A fecking laughing stock. The most important transfer window of our recent history and we are looking like rank amateurs.

He's simply said he's happy and does not want to leave emphatically time and time again.

Bury your head in the sand if you like.

If the deal happens my gut is it won't work out or it simply doesn't happen.

Either way I think its a bad move.
