If we get this through and nobody else, I’d still be happy with this summer. We haven’t had a ball player of his calibre in midfield since Carrick retired, and it’s telling in how we struggle to build play and maintain sustained pressure, this is a massive step in the right direction.

Name dropped him in the Rice thread a year back as someone we need rather than a destroyer/ballwinner btw, glad our coaching staff agreed, rather than prioritizing Caf favorites Rice, Neves, Phillips, Bissouma.

Eh? When was he ever a holding mid? He seems to thrive further up the pitch and his defensive qualities are probably his weakest.
If were you, I would investigate a bit further before you state that. At Ajax he was. his defensive strengths are fantastic. At Barcelona he was set in attacking because Busquets was on his position.

Romano as well as many others are reporting £55 million (€63 million) base fee with £13 million (€15 million) in add ons so £68 million as a maximum fee which is around €78 million, Barca wanted €85 million (£73 million) plus add ons at the start so we’ve managed to bring them £18 million (€20 million) down by the looks of it which could be the difference between a couple more signings coming in or not.
That's what he's saying now.

Say what?
Loose Matic, Pogba Greenwood etc and only being in De Jong?

Vd. Beek - - De Jong - - Eriksen

Hahahah people's obsession with Van de Beek is so funny. He couldn't even make it in a relegation team in Everton. He'll never make it in our team, totally average player, time for him to get back to Netherlands.

Hahahaha you do realise he started every game until he was injured hahahahaha?

De Jong does well against the press. Pogba doesn't. Only time Pogba is at peak form is when he has someone carry the water. Kante, Matic, various DM types at Juventus.

Pogba at Juventus had Pirlo AND Vidal to cover running and defensive duties. Even in France, he has Kante AND another midfielder (Matuidi @ World cup) to do the work for him...

Matic and Pogba played a minimal role in the team last year. You’d think ETH would get something out of VdB, so it’s McFred, De Jong, VdB, Bruno, then you can also integrate Hannibal into the 1st team, that’s sufficient for a top 4 race. Amad/Elanga/Sancho can all play on the right.

We’ve signed the wrong type of player for far too long, I’m prepared to be patient instead of getting signings for the sake of signing, fat lot of good it did us.

If the reports about the fees are correct this has been pretty good negotiating by our standards.

Knowing there was a deadline for Barca of the end of June helps as the whole way through the worst case scenario would be knowing the rest of the transfer budget remaining with weeks of the transfer window yet to go.

I agree with this sentiment. There's an obsession with pure defensive ball winners on this site, but our biggest problem for years has been control over the game, especially with the ball.
