To my mind, he has to go out and buy a real centre forward. It was why I thought Nunez wasn't the worst idea in the world. It's why I was hoping against hope that Spurs wouldn't finish top four and Kane might be stupid enough to join us!! We need a guy who score 20 league goals a season - something even Ronaldo won't be able to do next season and anyway, he isn't a No.9 to me
Agree. CR7 should not play as CF. For the team to challenge on top, there must be many scoring sources. Relying on single player never works out consistently in the long season.

This I can get behind. I know PL Modric wasn’t flying around making tackles or pressing like a lunatic but he was calm composed press resistant and creative. A magic player. If we can go from McT to FDJ as you said it will be a massive upgrade. the problem is if FDJ gets injured we are probably back to Fred and McT and that’s clearly not been good enough. I think Fred and FDJ next year would be enough to get us top 4 if the forwards can find a way to spark. They will have to work much harder than they have done at any other point post Fergie though. Hopefully the hunger is there.
I’d like to see Hannibal and perhaps Garner given some minutes in certain games to see if they can play there way into being back ups.

From what I read and hear, ETH likes to play many players and gives a lot of opportunities to youngsters. It’s another reason I am truly looking forward to the new season. Players like Hannibal, garner, and many other emerging now will play a big part I think.

Laird has to be an option at some point

You're going to have to keep waiting. He excels at build up play from the back, ball carrying, resisting press, dribbling, and making runs with the ball from box to box. He is capable of making the exquisite pass here and there with remarkable technique, but his primary function is not as a playmaker. He is our first ball playing midfield signing since Pogba though so that's something to be excited about, if the rumours are true of course.

You described how most people typically view a playmaker. Can receive the ball deep, keep it ticking, resist the press and find a line breaking pass.

The argument has been made here that since Frenkie is on holiday at the moment there’s really no point in reaching an agreement with Barcelona until he’s back from his holiday. For those who have much greater knowledge of the mechanics of transfer negotiations, is it normally the case that the player is physically present when representatives of the two clubs are haggling over terms?

No, Frenkie or players are represented by agents that handle all of these things and talk on their behalf. Players will no doubt be kept up to date on these things via a phone call or text but I would imagine wage package has probably already been agreed if United are actually making proposals to Barca.

When it actually gets serious ie fee agreed then that is when players are needed to be available

Hopefully we are on the brink of getting this deal over the line so we can move on to other targets. We obviously need a lot more.

It's a shame we haven't got a 25 year old Matic to partner him in midfield who in my opinion would be perfect next to him.

I'm not usually one to be a killjoy but I will caution that quite a lot of Spanish fans don't seem to be convinced that Lluis Miguelsanz is a particularly reliable source. That doesn't necessarily mean that there's nothing in this latest report; it can sometimes happen that some of the less reliable journalists pick up on stories before the more reliable ones "break" them. I'd just be careful before getting too excited about this deal being completed soon.

This is the “news” in that article:

Manchester United, meanwhile, are set for a big summer rebuild under new manager Erik ten Hag, with Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong among their main targets, and newly-rich Newcastle will also splash the cash – with Nick Pope their latest recruit.
No it says:

Manchester United are reportedly closing in on the signing on Frenkie de Jong.

Discussions with Barcelona are now said to be at an advanced stage following talks in the last few hours, according to Spanish outlet Sport.

The report adds that United will agree to pay around £69m for De Jong and hope that the midfielder can sign on the dotted line before the end of the month.

I don’t know about most people but I view a playmaker as the main creative force in a team and would expect him to be on the ball a lot and make a lot of key passes. Scholes for example. Carrick to a lesser extent. Possibly FDJ is similar-ish to Carrick.

Fdj doesn’t need a rice type player, he needs a box to box player.

I think he might setup without a true striker. Eth has done this before playing Berghuis in the centre of attack before haller arrived. Bergius was more of a winger / cam, I’m not sure who he would try in there though? Rashford/sancho/Bruno?

Sorry about that. Teaches me not rely on what shows up in tweeted articles on my iPhone.

The Spanish transfer window opens then.

EDIT: It’s actually Friday sorry. I got what date it is now mixed up
I think he can sign before then. It’s just the other way around, Barca can’t sign anyone until their window opens, but they can still sell.
