@Sviken I know the likes of Whitwell and Stone has insisted even now that he was a panic buy, but that doesn’t bear out in reality. They were just completely out of the loop on that one, as was the Madrid’s press. The timeline we are given is that Casemiro thought about leaving as early as last Christmas, and decided he wanted to leave after the CL final. His team told him to go on holiday and according to Fred’s account, Cas already phoned him up asking about life at United. Now, I don’t doubt that they have a personal relationship before, but you don’t ring someone out of the blue asking about their place of work. What we can surmise is that his team must have put the words out to some teams who can afford him, but insisted on secrecy since he could have yet stayed. In August 10 after the Super Cup he finally made up his mind and 9 days later he was a Utd player. The match against Brentford was August 13, and we all know the story about how he was watching it live and told his team to prompt us to speed up. So either our transfer folks became incredibly good at closing deal to finalize a transfer of that magnitude in mere days (and everything has to be signed off by the Glazers), or we have been in contact all summer and just sped things up once it became clear. No other club was linked with him, no one heard about it until everything was pretty much done, all the ITKs were bamboozled. There were no drawn out process playing out in the press, no last minute gazump.

And Fred actually said he ‘found out(about the transfer) well before they announced it’, then continued into details about the chat. It clearly wasn’t a ‘hey, how are you doing?’, it was ‘I’m getting an offer, sell me this club’.

Just need to copy and paste this on every freaking posts questioning Casemiro buy.

He would improve this team a lot, his press resistance and ways to split the lines is outstanding. Brilliant player if we want to add a player to help out with possession.
There was an instance where he drove up the pitch from damn near on his own penalty area, straight through Fred and another one of our players and progressed the ball over the halfway line leaving our midifield players as spectators.

Imagine that kind of ball progression into threatining areas with the security of Casemiro behind him. He'd have license to this kind of damage at will in this team.

I still want him at United.

Casemiro on his decision to leave Real Madrid

After his speech, Casemiro then took part in a press conference with the media and he discussed a number of aspects of his transfer in more detail. This included an explanation of why he has decided to leave, and the fact that this wasn’t something that happened just in the past week. As the player stated: “After the Champions League final I spoke with my agent and we had the sense that my time here was coming towards an end. My agent told me to go on holiday and relax and then we spoke again after a month and I still had this feeling that my cycle here was coming to an end. When the news came out then the transfer went quickly, but we’d already had these conversations. It was very difficult to speak about this with the president, but I think being honest is one of my great values. I was always honest in these conversations.”

If the options of signing midfielder and striker in the summer are the followings:

A) Sign FDJ but can only spend 20m max on striker.
B) Sign Osimhen/Kane but can only sign 0 transfer fees of midfielder.

Which options would you pick?
FdJ is a great addition without a doubt, Osimhen is a ?, Kane getting old. So definitely FdJ.

FDJ is a hell of a player, Im just not comfortable signing someone who clearly didnt want to play for us. Those days have to be gone. If his Missus has a big say in his career then you also dont want that hanging over you again after the first damp cold Manchester winter she suffers.

I would prefer Palhinha TBH already established in the Prem, ideal cover and partner for Casemiro, Portuguese so fits right in with half the team, would be a darn sight cheaper and would actually want to come, as opposed to FDJ who is now getting his playing time at Barca, and didn't exactly jump through hoops to get here even when he wasn't getting minutes and Barca were treating him like dirt.

Get Palhinha and use the money we save elsewhere, another mid or towards Osimhen

EXTREMELY different sort of player. Palhinha is a tackling machine, I don't think that's what EtH is looking for. And if he is I'd rather he buys Rice Rice baby.

Yeah Rice will be more expensive and is supposedly already Chelsea bound, obviously ETH knows what he wants, right now we have cover and adaptability in the attacking arears of midfield, even more with Diallo and Hannibal, even if it could be improved, if Casemiro is not playing we got no quality in defensive mid, TBH I have yet to see anything that impresses me with FDJ

I think the decision rests very much with where Mrs de Jong prefers to live.

I don't know why people keep saying that. I don't doubt that family plays an important part in decision making. But you're here claiming that a football player doesn't have any strong opinions about his own career but he simply goes wherever his GF wants to live, like he's some kind of pet? What are you even basing this stuff on? Jayzus.

He is brilliant but doesn't really want to play here. To me that means it is dead in the water even if we could sign him.

I agree. It’s a ridiculous idea based on one Instagram post last summer, just cos she said she loves Barcelona. Frenkie never had any intention to leave Barcelona because he wants to play for Barcelona, not Manchester United. Simple.

I think most people on here see this way too black and white. "He doesn't want to come because he and/or his girlfriend like Barcelona too much", "he never wanted to join us" blah blah blah.

Maybe it is true, maybe it's not.

I think we should look at some of the facts before hypothesising he doesn't want to come because XYZ:
  1. We chased him for most of the summer. I don't think we'd have spent so much time chasing him without him being just a little open to joining us.
  2. He was/is due a substantial amount of deferred wages. Many of Barca's players agreed to defer most of their wages during Covid, with these coming as a loylty bonus later on. If he had changed clubs, he would not be due the loyalty bonus.
  3. He loves Barca, Xavi likes him and therefore he was happy to stay. This doesn't mean he didn't want to join us.
  4. Barca wanted to sell for financial reasons.
In the end, the transfer didn't happen, but I'm quite sure there were many factors deciding this outcome.

I think he would be the perfect fit for us and I still think there is a chance we buy him in the summer, as Barca are still in financial trouble and he is one of their most sellable assets.

Not even remotely the profile of midfielder we're looking for.

Agree. It is such a dumb and ridiculous thing that somehow became a fact here on Redcaf.

Frenkie is Dutch. Barcelona holds a special place in the heart of many Dutch football fans. The idea is that Barcelona is made by Cruijff and Barcelona does get special mention in our media. A lot of Dutch players have played for Barcelona and Barcelona is seen as a Spanish Ajax. Frenkie grew up watching Xavi, Iniesta and Messi dominating but as a midfielder himself he looked at Iniesta and Xavi. Barcelona was winning everything at that time with football, if you like that type of football, that was great and of a very high level. Barcelona became Frenkie his dreamclub (mentioned in interviews) and its understandable that he didnt want to leave for Manchester United that just came of a season where Manchester United was the most laughed at club in Europe.

Frenkie still is receiving (and owed) a lot of money, lives in a nice city, won his place in the team back and is likely going to win the title. You cant even claim he made a horrible decision to stay at Barcelona.

If we merge this FdJ thread with last years will we beat the record?

seems fair as the debate is still doing the same rounds

I'll have you know that Barcelona would be nothing without Irishman and former Man United player, Patrick O'Connell:

FdJ might be more receptive to the move this summer but get a feeling Barca may be reluctant to let him go.

Assuming the fee is similar to what was agreed last summer, I'd prefer getting him over Bellingham

Ten Hag hopes sampling the Old Trafford feel-good factor as United beat Barcelona will help persuade De Jong to join

I suspect the situation will be reversed to last summer, when he didn't want to leave and Barca wanted to cash in. FDJ will probably look at United as a much more appealing prospect. Not just because of United's progress but because the Premier League is the place to be at the moment. La Liga really is in the doldrums, with very little quality outside the big two.

However I'd be amazed if Barca let him go. Xavi changed formation mid-season from a 4-3-3 to a 4-2-2-2 to accommodate both Busquets and De Jong, and that's become their default formation. In essence, they've rebuilt their midfield around De Jong. Since Busquets is going this summer, they're already in the market for one deep midfielder, so there's little chance they'll let both of them leave when their preferred formation requires two. Money talks of course but I suspect he'll cost too much to be worth it.

Yeah unfortunately doesn't seem likely. But would be a dream pairing.

I have a feeling Barca still want Silva and vice versa. A sale of FDJ would help facilitate that

I remember when the season started everybody was laughing at him because he would not get a start there and Busquets, Pedri and Gavi was the preferred pairing.

However with the injuries to Dembele and Fati looking a shadow of his former self, Xavi realized that it’s Better to accommodate DeJong and have better control and defensive stability in the side.

if they are in a position like last season where they will have to sell to buy new players. I believe outside of him maybe Fati or Torres could fetch some cash or players team could go for.

Lewa, Rafinha, Gavi, Pedri and Aroujo seems to be untouchable in their side. So I believe if we can persuade him, we have a good chance.

This year Barcelona, in principle, will ask for more money. I guess about €100M minimum. The economic situation of the club is different and Xavi considers FDJ non-transferable.

The Spanish league has players of great quality, some are young players.
And good teams and coaches.
The way of playing in Spain with many fouls, waste of time may seem that football is worse than it is.

A Casemiro and De Jong midfield pivot is just mouthwatering, absolutely elite.
