French Open 2012

Yeah fluked would be the word?

Did he or did he not look like a deer in headlights after 10 or whatever consecutive game wins by djokovic? Rain saved him. He faced a different djokovic today and had time to recharge his mental state.

Don't doubt the amazing effort by Djokovic, but Nadal will always be king of clay in normal conditions. Djokovic will really push him close for the next few years to come and might win 1 or 2.

I can say the samething about nadal. He definitely wasn't playing at his best in the 3rd set. Stop being bitter. Djokovic win in the third set was largely because of the rain, so you know in the perfect condition nadal would've won anyway

What a timely break for nadal yesterday.

If the rain hadn't been coming down in the first place and making the balls wet, chances are this match wouldn't have even gone in to a fourth set.

Nadal deserved it, but tougher challenges are yet to come for him if/when he faces Djokovic at Wimbledon/US Open.

Absolutely gutted. This was a completely new and different match today, one that Novak had to start with a massive disadvantage.

He suddenly looked much sharper in yesterday's last game, but that was of course just one game, so it might have been a blip.

Perfect conditions? I dunno about that, rain actually slows a clay court. i'd say slow long gritty rallies are not perfect for djokovic either, so conditions were not perfect for both?

Djokovic lost the second set and was broken in the third set, perfect start for nadal aft er the break. I'd say novak' rain delay was more destroying, since he basically entered the zone and was toying with nadal.

How could it have been a blip considering what happened in the matches against Seppi and Tsonga?!

I never understand the reactions on here. Everything has to be taken to the extreme. Nadal was the better player over the course of the final and he's the best player of all time on clay. Djokovic didn't choke or bottle anything, he just couldn't keep a lid on Nadal for long enough.

And as for the delay, the only reason he was in the position he was was because Nadal outplayed him in the first couple of sets. There's no point moaning about the swing in momentum being crucial as you have no idea what would have happened if they'd come back on ten minutes later.

To be fair, Djokovic still isn't at complete ease on this surface. But I do think he'll win it in the next two years. People forget this is his first French open final. Hell probably win Wimbledon too. He'll have too much for Federer and Nadal there.

You're right, in the end Nadal played the better tournament, near perfect actually, and surely deserves the title. I like Nadal very much so I don't have a problem with him winning it. But as a Djokovic fan I obviously would have wanted to see him come back from those two sets down and winning the fifth. Anyways, looking forward to Wimbledon now.

Glad this grandslam is over. My least favorite of the surfaces. Time to move to the quicker surfaces where imo you get the most exciting tennis.

Yeah, it's next to impossible to beat Nadal on clay, so giving him a two set head-start is going to be arguably the toughest test on the tour. I still think if he'd gotten him into a fifth set he'd have been able to take Nadal.

If your worst day is you being the best player in the world and the runner up in the French to the greatest clay court player of all time then life isn't all that bad.

It's not the rain slowing down the courts, as Nadal would actually be happy with that. It's the wet conditions that causes the balls to get heavier meaning Nadal does not get as much topspin on his shots which in turn means the ball isn't jumping as much and is landing right in the hitting zone for more attacking players. It's why Almagro troubled him and one of the reasons why Soderling beat him.

No doubt the rain delay was more beneficial to Nadal, but then we're only saying that because he won. If he'd still lost, no one would really care.

I don't get the level of fanboyism in tennis. I guess the croatians have a valid reason to support Djokovic. But what are you'll going to do when these guys retire?

Well one would think the Croatians would hate Novak considering he's Serbian. :smirk:

Delighted for Rafa. Greatest clay courter of them all.

Noone has answered my question yet. Is this the first time that 2 players have played each other in 4 consecutive GS finals. Can't think of any recent examples. Level of consistency between these two is phenomenal.

He's a worthy favourite for sure. The draw will be absolutely fascinating. I think there are a number of players - Tsonga, Berdych and Raonic top the list - who will give Murray and Federer plenty to think about if they're in the same quarter. I'll be surprised if we have the top four in the semis but I expect Nadal to face Djokovic again in the Final.

Delighted for Rafa. He played some of the best clay court tennis of his career this tournament.

How could anyone who tennis regularly can call Djokovic a choker is beyond me.

That's because he doesn't watch any tennis regurarly. he's a part of the pack of wankers who tune in for the semis/final every other GS and then start pouring out their idiotic comments.

I was at the match yesterday and here are my feelings:

First I want to send out a big feck YOU!!!!! to the organizers of the tournament for fecking me out of a lot of money and time and a great experience. Even if you don't count the fact that they don't have a roof at the centre court, how the feck are you unable to install some fecking floodlights?

After the 2nd rain delay when they said that play would continue at 8pm, it was barely raining anymore and it had stopped completely by 8:15pm and it didn't rain anymore after that. Do you think that the tournament director comes out to inform everybody thorough the speakers that the match will continue tomorrow? No, they announce it by writing a text on the fecking scoreboard like utter cnuts!!!

I would also like to send out a big feck YOU!!! to the majority of the crowd who don't deserve to watch a spectacle like this. I've never seen such a big collection of pompous, twatish, pretentious cocks at such a scale in my entire life. Is this really the norm with tennis crowds? If it is, I'll stick with attending football and basketball.

Credit to both players, they put out a fantastic show yesterday while playing in harsh conditions. As a Novak fan I really enjoyed the 8 games in a row that he won. He at least he instilled some hope for us in the match when it all looked lost when he was broken immediately in the 3rd.

Sorry for swearing so much, it was just the easiest way to explain how pissed off I am right now.

Personally, I love Wimbledon. More players come to the fore on the faster surfaces I feel (grass, hard court) and that's why earlier I used to only pay attention to the other three GS's and usually completely ignore the French. The likes of Del Potro, Tsonga and Berdych will be a lot more effective on those surfaces. Not to mention Federer who will, it seems, now rely more on power and hitting winners earlier in the rallies like to tried against Djokovic. And if his serve gets back to his best, he has a great chance IMO but it hasn't been so for a long time.

Del Potro is one of my favourite players but although he's getting better I don't think he's in love with the grass.

Roger has lost to Berdych and Tsonga here in recent years and I can't see why that trend won't continue.

 you really did let off some steam here.

Unbelievable isn't it. I've never seen another sportsman show the mental strength that Djokovic has in the last couple of years.

Easy there, it's just been last year and this year mostly. Before that, everyone knew his reputation as quitter.

And honestly for all the talk about rain and ifs and buts, yada yada yada. If the sun had been out yesterday, the match would have been over in 3 sets anyways:p

Please shut up.

Please shut up.

 Not exactly sure what your point's meant to be. If we're bringing up ifs and buts about the weather yesterday, yada yada yada. I can say on a dry, sunny day on Chartrier, Nadal wins in 3. If you disagree, okay  And before Djokovic's amazing last year, he was known as a whinner and quitter on the ATP. This time in 2010, you wouldn't list him as one of the mentally tough players

Djoko isn't a choker right now. He definitely was a bit mentally "weak" pre 2011.
