Let's see if he'll take him off for the 3rd time after getting a yellow card in the 1st half.

He’s an animal. If there was an award for the amount of graft someone has done on the pitch over the last 2 years he surely gets it. Get someone mobile in beside who can take it on under pressure and pass through the lines then we are looking good with Fred going box to box supplying Bruno and doing the running for him.

Of course he will. Serious underrating of Fred by people on here.

There's a reason he's benching Fabinho! maybe you just don't understand why.

He's not benching Fabinho, Casemiro is.

Fabinho could easily play in midfield with Casemiro, he's keeping him on the bench.

They're not playing both sitting midfielders against Venezuela and Paraguay, mate.

I like Fred plenty, I'm glad he's getting games for Brazil, but saying he's being preferred to Fabinho just isn't really true.

Fred has had a better season than Fabinho so he’s starting for Brazil. I don’t get why people can’t just accept hes one of our most reliable players. Yeah there’s a mistake in him but his workrate and effectiveness can’t be understated. Playing him with McT/Matic/Pogba and he’s pretty much left running the midfield/fighting the battle alone and he is also Bruno’s main supply line through the middle. Put someone more compatible in there beside him and I think he can go up another gear

Fabinho is hardly a sitting CDM is he? go watch him play or Monaco in a 4-4-2 he's a great all round player. Used to play RB too.

If their manager thought he'd be better than Fred in midfield he'd play him, mate

That would imply Fred is being picked for his attacking qualities. Seems a little unlikely tbh.

Not for his attacking qualities, just for his pressing and workrate. They've already got Casemiro to sit back and cover, they don't need Fabinho doing the same thing.

He’s got more goals and assists than Fabinho. It’s only 3 assists and a goal but add that to the work rate and he’s a decent all round bet. I think he’s sent Rashford through one on one at least 5 times last season and he missed them all. He can definitely assist.

He’s definitely being picked for his pressing and work-rate. At the end of the day it’s all about winning the ball back. Which is something that Fabinho is absolutely fantastic at. So keeping him on the bench is impressive. Certainly goes against the woeful impression of Fred you’d get from reading about him on here.

Fabinho comes on in the 85th minute to replace Fred... to play alongside Casemiro :wenger:

Fabinho just came on in 85th min for Fred. Who said Fabinho can’t play next to Casemiro? :)

Winning side late in game in 'bringing on extra holding midfielder' shocker.
Needing another CDM against Venezuela when 2-0 up? they're just giving Fred a rest ;)

Neither of the two are exactly regulars for Brazil. Fred’s playing for the first time in three years and they’ve about 25 caps between them.

C'mon lads, give me a break.

They're different types of players, Fred isn't playing in Fabinho's place regardless of who's being subbed for who in the 85th fecking minute!

That’s exactly the point why it’s impressive. Fred benched a midfielder who has more 25 caps than him for 3 games in a row.

I don’t think you’ve understood that correctly. About 25 caps between them.

Ok understood but why is it relevant to the fact Fred is now the regular one? Fred is starting over Fabinho for 3x in less than 2 weeks.

I thought he and Neymar worked nicely together, although having Neymar in front of you probably makes it look easy.
he’s the perfect foil for neymar. he does all his defensive work and covers the right back so neymar doesn’t have to track back.

he does exactly the same for rashford.

the guy defends midfield and left wing at the same time, it’s exactly why he’s so important to teams.

is he the most skilful, the best passer or scorer? no. but he’s a vital water carrier that all teams need.

One good pass that leading to easy tap in goal. Casemiro looked class, Fred looked passenger.

This was against Venezuela that had 12 players out, due to tested positive for COVID-19 a day before thegame.

One would think people would be happy our players are doing well for their NTs. It's not like we had the pleasure of watching too many of them in the Euros so far.

Happy for Fred, good to see our players do well for their NT's. That should always be the case at United.

I am not sure whether Fred has had a better season than Fabinho, I think not tbh. Fabinho was even collosal when moved out of position to play CB. He really dominated us vs Liverpool the last match, where he played with Thiago and Wijnaldum as single Holding midfielder. Think he's class.

Fred - Casemiro offer more different qualities than Fabinho-Casemiro though. I'd say Fabinho is better than both.

oh come on. Not on the Caf!

im not a big fan of Fred - but I’m delighted he’s playing for Brazil.

unless it’s an older player - where playing internationally can affect their club form. It can only be good for the player and the club. We should want our players to be the best they can be. Playing internationally clearly helps.

i have to seriously question anyone who thinks differently.

This. Strange people - these caftards.

I’m delighted for him, as a person. I’m sure it’s a big honour for him to pull on the Brazil shirt. Plus being picked ahead of a world class player like Fabinho is a real show of faith.

I’d be lying if I said I was happy though. I’d be much happier it he was lying in a hammock on a beach having a well earned rest. He’s got a good case for being the hardest working player at the club last season and badly needs a break.

Really happy for Fred. Seems like a great guy and works so hard for us, it's hard not to be a fan (although some find it very easy), he's a really valuable player for us.

He deserves this and he must feel great playing for Brazil.

As frustrating as Fred has been for us, it’s because he’s been shoehorned to play as a DM for us (due to squad/depth restrictions) when his Brazil showings showcase us that he’s not meant for that kind of a role.

imo his best position is with a DM behind him so that he can press high and break up play without there being too much worry of him being passed around or dribbled past due to the extra layer of protection between him and the defense

Yep, and it's a similar situation with McTominay, who is at his best when he can drive forward with the ball. He can't do that in the pivot.

Both are massively underappreciated and denigrated for doing a job that really shouldn't be theirs. That they did it last season, helping us to recover from a bad start and ultimately finish 2nd is something that they'll never get credit for, even though they should.

Tbf to him, I think this was his first call up to the NT since 2018, so he should be relatively fresher than most at the Copa America.

Agree on the rest of the post though.

Yep. It’s no surprise both looked at their best in seasons past when Matic was able to play more regularly and provide that cushion for them/Fred.

Fred was never a DM, José converted him and he still plays there for us because we have no one better to fill in. It’s why often times the McFred pivot, our midfield is combative hence why the many draws. They lack progressive passing from deep to Bruno&co. Both are ball winners. They don’t hold their positions well because it’s not their natural position; rather they are best when they aggressively get out at the opposition to harass them/win the ball.

This is why if we can bring in a high end starting caliber DM (Rice or whoever), it would allow Fred to play to his strengths rather than being given the onus of playing deep and holding. It’s why even if hypothetically speaking Pogba walks after next season you wouldn’t even need a replacement with a DM(Rice/etc) since he’d allow Fred to play more naturally with Bruno up ahead of them both. In the meantime if a DM was secured, it would give great depth since it’d allow Pogba to play there as well and start.

...wholeheartedly agree. As per the reasons mentioned, most people (including myself at times) don’t seem to realize Fred/Scott are doing jobs that they’re not suited to and yet the coaching staff and team was still able to get to a 2nd place finish. Imagine the squad potential if someone actually suited to sit deep were brought in. Yea we get frustrated at times at the McFred duo but if everyone could just take a big step back to see the full picture, you could only applaud them for their efforts really.
