It is obvious that the posters moaning on here, nitpicking and dissecting one-two-three misplaced passes mostly exclusively watch only Manchester United games and rarely have any exposure to football outside of that. It is same in Bruno Fernandes thread at times. They have this uninformed opinion/perception that the players from other teams, the ones who are highly regarded, do not put a foot wrong in a match. Like I said it is largely because they never actually watch any other player actually play and merely rely highlight reels, general public opinion and articles to form their opinions. So, to them, a performance spanning over 90 minutes still leaves a lot to desire even if there are only a couple of moments of vulnerability shown in an otherwise impressive display. They do not understand that it literally happens to every player if they play a full 90 min game and are on the ball as much as a midfielder is.

You hear complains about Fred misplacing the pass when Manchester United players were being pressed by a team as good as Leipzig while trying to play out from the back. One of his misplaced passes happened because AWB passed the ball to him inside when he never should have. And these things happen with every player in every top team during every game if the team is being pressed well.

It is pointless arguing with them because they seem to have this feeling that they're striving for perfection in United players whereas rest of us settling for mediocrity.
Good summary. Yesterday was a very good performance from him. It’s crazy to think that the player who couldn’t set a foot right under Mourinho has delivered to such displays against two Teams who played the CL semifinals a couple of months ago.

In a Pep team he'd only be expected to pass it 5 yards sideways and he could easily manage that.

No, in the DM role he'd be expected to be the glue that keeps his ball playing defenders from having to defend. We've seen what City were like after Fernandinho's heroics in DM 2 seasons ago where he kept them from looking as vulnerable as they really were.

He still needs to clean up his game a tad more but I totally dismissed him as a failed transfer and he's totally proved me wrong. Fair fecks Fred, certainly a big game player and a very useful player to have in our squad.

Just don't let him shoot.

I am having constant ‘debates’ with a mate about Fred who uses him as a reason to defend Pogba.

‘Pogba isn’t performing because Fred is crap’. ‘Pogba would be much better if Fred was a world class midfielder’.

you get the picture.

The more he plays, particularly with McTominay, the more I see how integral he is. He is just a bundle of energy, which comes with it it’s own problems BUT his stats are great. He can protect a defence but can also bring the ball to transition between defence and attack as well as passing the ball out of defence. He also seems to know when to just get rid and not mess about.

Really like him.

Excellent game last night. Crazy improvement in general in the last year or so.

The keeper made an extremely good save to deny Fred. We can't have all ball playing midfield. It's like Van Aerle in the Dutch team of yester years. Someone has got to do the hard work. Fred does it.

Fred's never going to be "world class" but he's so vital for team balance, if we win a few trophies in the next few years (big if) he'll probably go down as a bit of a cult hero. Since the start of last season he's been one of our most consistent performers, in the summer I said I wasn't against the idea of selling one of McTominay or Fred but now I think we'd be daft to sell either, they both have value to us as players and they'll be important to the team over the coming seasons.

Hes been really good for a year, the problem is a lot of fans are fixated on G/A stats. They forget that teams need balance.

He's possibly the one guy that I'm not convinced we have adequate cover for or that it would be very noticeable if he's missing. If we go a 4-2-2-2, we can chop and change with at least 1 top quality option for each block (martial/rashford/cavani/Greenwood for attack, Bruno/Pogba/VdB for CAM, Telles/Shaw, Maguire/Tuanzebe/Lindelof)... Williams has to show he can compete with Wan Bissaka too of course, but at holding midfield, we really should be using 2 of Fred, McTominay or Matic. Only concern is I'm not sure McTominay and Matic can go together or if both need to pair with Fred. Van de Beek started off as a defensive mid for Ajax though, and his skill set would work fine there when needed, so maybe he's the guy to rotate with Fred next to Matic or McTominay, but in general it's crazy the turn around for Fred. Really struggled at first but turned into such an excellent ball winning midfielder who can play it into the more attacking players, but also himself being very good on the ball and pretty press resistant.

Has to start against Arsenal, and then rest him vs Istanbul.

We have to watch the game later without ball watching to see how individual players do.
The more I watch the more I am impressed with Fred.

He is like a less good version of Kante. Which is really good, as Kante before his legs started to go was like having an extra midfielder.

Not as solid on the ball as Kante, who still is very press resistant. Henderson with more expansive (if less solid) on the ball game too not a bad comparison.

Debatable. I think he's doing everything Kante ever did personally, he just came with a bigger price tag.

That's strange since they don't normally play together. Ole has generally used Fred as Pogba's cover, not his partner. They only started three games together last season (all in cup games) and this was the first match they've started together this season.

well, thanks for the heads up.

Hadn’t even thought about that.

I’ll keep it up my sleeve for his next nonsensical ramble

Why not? If he keeps doing what he's doing and getting better at it he can be.

The player he should be aiming to emulate is Busquets, and (cheating aside) i don't think anyone would ever question that he was world class. If you want to play the stats game, Busquets contributed to goals at almost exactly the same rate as Fred has done for us and Fred actually creates more chances than he did. Busquets at his best lost the ball roughly 10 times per game, I bet not many people would have guessed that. All players give the ball away at times, and not everybody on the field is there to play defence splitting passes.

We don't need to fixate on stats, with assists and possession losses and the rest, and it's actually reinforcing what a good player he is becoming when you consider which posters are complaining about him because he loses the ball 2.43 times per 10 minutes when the sun is at 64 degrees overhead.

Playing like a proper destroyer at present. Hounding opposition players the second they enter his area of the field.
Excellent last few games for us.

Have you noticed that Fred is currently on a massive upward curve right now? Even Ole commented recently that he is still 'adjusting' to Premier League which suggests he still has further improvements ahead.

It seems that midfield enforcers require abit more experience and only truly emerge aged 25+. Having seen guys like Kante and Fletcher develop in front of us, I wouldn't be surprised if Fred can make the same progress into a world class water carrier, and that it will happen by end of this season.

Love how he wins back possession. Not the best with the ball but in the big games we need players like him.

He's very good and I think he's an important part of a midfield. I think this is probably as good as he's ever going to be, he's been on this level since the start of last season, he's 27 so he's in his prime years. I don't mind if he gets better or not, I'm happy with his current ability. I feel every time one of our players gets into a rich vein of form he gets labelled "world class", it's not something I agree with, I'd be very happy if they did end up at that level but I'm not holding my breath.

What is the main difference between peak Kante and current Fred? Was Kante passing much better?
I don’t think there is much difference.

Except that Fred has only recently reached this level, and Kante sustained it for several years with high profile contributions to a PL and World Cup win.

let’s hope Fred can stay at this level for next 3 years.

Apparently he lost 10 of his 11 fuels against Leipzig. Shows how misleading stats can be.

Yeah, he misses quite a lot of his tackles, etc but almost always wins the ball or gets them to pass it backwards.

Would that be his best performance for us? Has played himself into a must start role. Impressive.

The opposite. Kante was probably better with his positioning and tackling, Fred can still sometimes end up running around like a headless chicken. But Fred gets on the ball more and does more with it.

I think this isn't true. There is a yet a level left for Fred where he can hit some more through balls and get his long shots on as well. I think he'll notch it up a level soon.

Does Fred’s tackle count as an assist for Rashford’s 2nd goal?

I thought he was terrible when he signed for you, scruffy passer with a really dodgy touch. Would turn into trouble all the time. Great to see a player stick at it and really turn it round. He's an essential pick. A midfield 3 with him in it is strong.

I absolutely love him. Tenacious, huge amounts of energy, and quietly becoming one of the first names on the team-sheet. A real redemption story after he had been written off by basically everyone. He's also from Belo Horizonte, the city I used to live in and where I met my partner! Keep it up, Fray-zhee!

They also paid over 100m for Keita and Oxelaide.

But yeah, they have found some very good deals in last few years.
Yeah Keita was a fecking disaster, but as you say they've done some good deals. 45 m för Fabinho isn't looking too bad. I know who I'd pick between him and Fred!
