Reading some of the comments i think i watched a different game. I honestly thought he was our best midfielder today - compared to his two partners who were trash. Looked forward to bring people in and hassled people. I can see him as being a replacement for Herrera.

Still looks like hes getting to grips with the speed of the game here and i dont think changing managers with a different vision has helped much. Imagine being coached for 6 months to get your fitness and positioning ready for Jose philosophy only for him to get the sack and another manager telling you to do something different.

He wasn't good today but i really believe theres a good player in there

I haven’t seen anything from Fred which suggests he is good enough, let alone a 52 million £ player.

I know it would be too early to write him off just yet, but the things he looks poor at are the things which have nothing to do with adjusting to the team/league.
His first touch is quite poor, his decision making, he’s too eratic.
Also he doesn’t seem to have any streach with his legs.
He plays like a Lego man.

He cannot shield the ball to save his life. It's like taking candy from a baby. If you cannot impose yourself against Reading , there is veery little hope I guess. He did make couple of good passes to start counters but that's it. His touch and awareness isn't great too . I have no clue why we paid 50m for him .

He seems to do something good, a good interception or pass, but then something really bad the next time he gets the ball. Like kicking it out of play for no reason

Yep, I mean he is older and barely better than Pereira and we paid 50m on him. It is pretty crazy when you think about it.
Agreed. Really annoying signing to be honest. It's not like there weren't options on the market, so why we burnt 52m on someone still playing in Ukraine at 25 that struggles to get games for their national team is beyond me. If we wanted to go down the route of raw potential, why not look at youngsters like Barella, Ndombele, Aouar, etc.? Cheaper (at least they would have been), younger and apparently not any worse. If we wanted more experienced players, Thiago was available, Nainggolan apparently was (not sure if he'd have left Italy though), Isco may have been open to a PL move, etc. 52m isn't a small amount of money by any means, so if we planned to go big, why not make sure it was at least on top quality?

I'm sure we'll see improvements over the season, but as I said, I'm not expecting any ground-breaking developments that will make this a great signing. I'd love for him to prove me wrong, but I'm not optimistic.

What was the hype with this guy?

Still haven't gotten much from him at all. Not even one match where you see that worth.

I still feel there's a player there but it's pretty crazy that we spend 50 million on him. Was he even the kind of player we needed? For that fee we could have gone for a playmaking midfielder instead, or a ball playing CB, or a proper right winger.

Anyway like I said he does have some interesting attributes. Hopefully next season we see him perform as an excellent box to box player once he gels with the team.

To be fair, it was a poor team performance by all accounts. The opposition isn't the be all and end all of things. It would be easier to show your quality in the game Vs Fulham at home than this one.

But of course he hasn't really looked at it even in other games, so clearly has stuff to work on.

Yeah, quite a lot actually, the stuff we should be seeing in him already since he's 26 now and not a kid. How'd even learn to shield the ball at this age? It's like asking Luakku to improve his touch. He plays without responsibility at all times wherever he is on the pitch. Very worried with the amount of money we payed for him. Shaktar owners must be laughing every single day since the sale.

Poor performance from Fred, really hoping he will kick on soon enough. Remember Vidic and Evra during their first 3 months , give him some time and he will come good.

He doesn’t seem like a Jose player. I wonder if Woodward bought him rather than Jose getting the scouts to monitor him.

Remember just last season with Lindelof.

All players need time to adjust, a lot of them need a full season.

He has played multiple good balls forward, some people seem to only focus on the positive some only on the negative

Spot on this, I thought he actually played some of the better attacking forward balls yesterday. He didn't have a great game but I'm not sure how much I can criticise his performance being in that horrific midfield yesterday.

He too often goes from the sublime to the ridiculous during a game. You can see he has some very strong qualities that we are really needing, but it all hasn't fully come together yet for him in the league.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt - if he's still like this, this time next year then we have a problem.

The biggest problem is people having too big expectations of him and now in retrospect questioning why we bought a player from the Ukrainian league, when they themselves thought he would be ready to boss our midfield.
Its unfair on Fred and I called this happening when the transfer was executed. Not trying to be a besserwisser, but anyone that had seen Fred playing and the state of "our" league here in the Ukraine saw this coming.
He needs this year at least to establish himself in the league. Then we can start to judge him.

This whole let him settle business annoys me, the top players don't need a season to settle in any league. The fee involved surely entitled us to some level of decent football provided, instead we've seen him subbed in every game because he's been a liability to the defensive side of his duties.

I knew there was an issue when he didn't get a minutes football for a very average Brazil side during the world cup.

Seems to melike he needs to calm down a bit when he is on the pitch. He seems a bit stressed in his decision making, so hopefully a bit of confidence can add a bit of calmness to his game. The Reading game was a hopeless game to shine in any way. So much less movement from the attack and full backs to play at, and the entire midfield three was all over the place.

Fred seems all over the place - possibly trying to play a type of football that is not the most suited to him. The PL also has a tempo it's played at & he is clearly out of sync in his first season as many players are. Anderson in comparison may be viewed by some positively or negatively - but he managed to acclimatise to the British game & its tempo either way - I hope it happens to Fred.

Might be a hated thing to say but If I had to pick one player that would benefit from LVG's management right now it would be Fred.

Playing a slightly basic game focusing on his positioning & passing would have helped him more at the early point of his career - rather than going from playing a purely defensive type of football under Jose to a purely attacking one under ole. Either way - the latter is significantly better but I hope the lad builds some 'basics' of football here rather than be someone he is not.

Yeah - I was saying the same thing on Saturday.

He's a proper mix bag of a player - with the bad stuff outweighing the good at the moment.

For a Brazilian he sure has a bad touch , saw him having 1-2 more unnecessary touch to sort his feet and end up dispossessed. And he isn't that much stronger either compared to Mata for example. Having bad touch and weak sure isn't good combination.

All of that may possible be true. But we do once in awhile see a footballer struggling to adapt to English football, at first, only to go and elevate his performances and become a hit thereafter.

My gut tells me that this isn't the case with Fred and that he just isn't actually that good. The reason is because his technique comes across as very 'unclean' to me and his vision is a mixed bag.

But you never know how it works out. I hope for our sake that it does because we spend a huge sum of money for it. And at a time when we could have done with other reinforcements.

Did we ever have a player from Brazil who played well for us?
I thought Rafael did well for us for a few years. Can't say he was a success given his potential was much greater than his peformances showed.

Otherwise, we never actually sign genuinely great Brazillian talents just like with Spanish talents. Herrera was the most English of the 'technical spaniards'. Mata wasn't in that category either and both more of a second striker and running slowly past his peak.

Anderson was extremely physically gifted for a young Brazillian. Fred didn't seem the most naturally talented either.

No worries. France is the hotbed of talent anyway :D

Did we ever have a player from Brazil who played well for us?
apart from the odd appearance from Rafael - and that famous squaring up to Tevez for which I'll always love the kid - I think the answer in an astounding NO.

Only 6 Brazilians have ever played for United and none, yet, have done that well. Early days still for Fred and Pereira, although I can see the latter leaving us for a free this summer

We have a similar problem with Argentinians - although the caliber has been higher, we haven't had a decent one for more than 2 years (except a reserve keeper).

Veron, Tevez, Heinze, Di Maria, Rojo and Romero. Tevez was a success, but only for such a short time.

Heinze was a success to be fair, just ended badly.

That will settle down.

He’s in the same situation with Lindelof, eager to impress but playing with nerves.

Once he relaxes that erraticness will settle down I’m sure. He’s clearly very talented.

I wonder if his goal counted instead of mata getting the pen would people still be moaning?

When he does something good, he looks great. Very talented. But then he'll do three awful things.

I reckon that's down to nerves. He's just playing in a rush and with anxiety. He needs to really slow down and accept he's made it to United. The move seems too big for him.

Some on here are so knee jerk and quick to form opinions. It is the lads first season in the premier league. Lets wait until next season before writing him off completely.

It certainly didn't end well! From memory, I thought he was only really any good for a season, in his second season he got a big injury and when he came back was displaced by Evra?

Didn't he win POTS in his first year? Second season was a write off but then in his third he did play a fair few times and was always pretty reliable... just got displaced by Evra, who would become one of the worlds best left backs, so no shame in that.

I agree that some who are writing him off now are jumping the gun and I'm still very hopeful he'll come good.

But I also think that some of the things he's doing are not what you'd expect from a £52m established Brazilian international midfielder - doesn't matter whether you're new to the league or not.
