He miscontrolled the ball when in plenty of space, he misplaced simple passes, he is so unaware of where the opposition is and got knocked off the ball, he only looks half in control of it and his body most of the time, and this wasn't against a PL side, it was against a team that is set to be relegated to the 3rd tier of English football, he wasn't alone in being poor today, but the bigger concern is that his flaws are basic fundamentals for a top player.
All that is nothing we haven't seen from a player in his first season. getting knocked off the ball (lightweight), lack of awareness etc etc. Lindelof was accused of being lightweight and in his second season has grown in confidence and established himself in our team. People have problem with Fred's inconsistency within games that he does something really good and then something strange the next moment which I would agree with. That's all part of the learning curve. I would be more concerned if he didn't show anything at all. With more game time I will expect those inconsistencies to be ironed out and some more of his natural qualities to come out.

I guess Pep didn't want Alexis too?

I think we should be patient with him. He needs games.
Yes because comparing Alexis at Udinese and Alexis at United correlates linearly with comparing Fred this season & just the last one, amirite?

Of course, Fred needs some more chances. But, the comparison with Pep not wanting Sanchez is just :wenger:

Was wasteful today and I’m not sure this is going to work out for him. I thought pairing him with other Portuguese speakers was a smart move but he still seemed out of place.

Not actually sure what he’s good at. Today it looked like he was filling Pogba’s Boots, which he definitely can’t do but then again he isn’t great as a defensive midfielder either. We can ideally turn him into a Fernandinho but I am pretty sure he won’t get more than next season to adapt.

Every so often he comes up with a good first time pass, the rest of his game is a mess.

Lindelof had trouble with the physicality at first, no doubt, but not with controlling a football under no pressure or making simple passes, Fred's flaws go beyond league adaption IMO, they are ingrained in his game, and if you look at him in comparision to say Torreira, who is no bigger in stature and also in his first season, the evidence is in the basics, I thought it was pretty clear he was techincally erratic and positionally poor when we bought him if you saw some full games and not just his Youtube comps, he had the loose control at Shaktar as well.

 sadly had the same thought! Maybe he could develop a lot in the way that Anderson wasn't able to, thanks to his fitness and motivational issues...surely Fred won't have the same problems

Pffft, of course not. :nervous:

Ando didn't lose the ball in bad areas like Fred does though. His touch was excellent and he understood how to protect the ball. He sometimes has issues with weight of pass and running out of steam early even before the weight issues kicked in. More talented than Fred.

Yeah, and he was stronger as well. Fred just seems a little light weight in protecting the ball and more erratic. Let us hope he can improve though, we already have other areas to fix.

Watching him play for Shakhtar you could see all these inconsistencies in his game we're seeing at the moment, are our scouts completely blind to the importance of consistency? He also occupies the same role as Pogba in midfield, pointless transfer.

That's just Fred's style of play and profile. You'll have to get used to it. He's never going to set the tempo of our game or slow the game down but rather be proactive and inject his pace and creativity wherever possible. You mentioned torriera but I'll give you Naby Keita - another player very highly rated and came with loads of expectations and similar money but isn't playing either. But Liverpool fans I know are ready to wait because they can see in glimpses what he will bring to their team. Even Fabinho has only just broken in. Players adapt at different speeds. I do think Fred is only just warming up. He's that kind of player at his lowest level will both frustrate and impress in equal measure like now and at his best level will be consistently good. Let's wait.

I’m trying to be kind (I think) but he was deplorable today. It’s not poor performances that inherently worry me, moreso the things he doesn’t seem to be very good at.

I mean, the ball either sticks to your feet or it doesn’t. His touch is miles out and he looks lost positionally. Elements that are difficult to put right.

I can deal with the bad passes (it happens) or getting caught with the ball (he’s bound to get to grips with the pace) but his general inability to get the ball under control, or be anywhere near where he should, worries me.

Did some good things but some woeful things as well. Having said that the whole team was poor today.

I seriously doubt Fred will ever make it here. Another mikitaryan error and probably worse. I honestly can’t imagine they ever watched him play and the point of the transfer.

We need a ruthless summer and allow ole to cull all the deadwood.

I know it was only pre-season but I was really giddy after watching him against Real Madrid. So far he's been a huge disappointment. I thought he'd be one of those who'd flourish with Mourinho gone but it's not looking good for him.

He just didn't seem to know what he was supposed to do.

He is not a youth player, he is seasoned footballer who has played in CL with Shakhtar.

How does it help to bring any balance and added quality to pogba Matic as a midfield partner?

I'm not suggesting he can set the tempo, I know what type of CM he is, I am talking about base fundamental flaws in his game like controlling a football consistently and passing it accurately consistently, being aware of the oppositions midfield, these are basics for a CM at the top level. The difference with Liverpool and Keita is that he will slot in as the most offensive midfielder in their 3 if he gets his act together and that role comes with a degree of protection as the other 2 CM's are the positional ones that cover for the lapses, in our side that is Pogba's role, Fred was supposed to be able to play where Ander does but if we use him there we'll be in massive trouble as he loses the ball way too often and has poor positional awareness. We can wait and see but my opinion is he's too flawed to be good enough for a club with our amibitions, if I'm wrong cool, but I'm not shying away from my view based off maybe being proved wrong is all.

It's not a comparison it's just strange to claim now Pep never wanted him probably just cause he's not proving his price tag at the moment.

Was not good today, but he played less than 900 minutes of football this season. Obviously it's too early to make any conclusions about him.

He shows glimpses but he isnt even close to being anywhere near 50m he just looks so mediocre.

I will give him a chance but I think he wont make it here.

Can someone who watched him before he arrived at United remind us what his good qualities are supposed to be?

I'm all for giving him the time to settle but while his flaws are very apparent, at the moment it's hard to see what he's supposed to bring to the side.

Adds bite and energy. Skilful, quick feet and surprisingly good passing range but also able to get back, defend and make tackles. Somewhere in the middle. I think he's a good partner for matic in the midfield or even Herrera. I'd like to see Herrera, Fred, Pogba midfield before the end of the season . At least once hopefully.

Fine squad option really but I'm not sure what he's supposed to be good at. Not much bite. Not much dynamism. Technique is fairly ordinary. His lack of obvious skills really contrasts with Matic, Herrera and Pogba who have something clear about them.

Still, he's a better bench option atm than Pereira who looks a bit like a lost duck.

The positives are his work rate and willingness to play attacking balls.

His touch was poor again today. Not sure if this is nerves/ trying too hard,or if he is just poor

Certainly showing nothing like a 50+ buy yet, but let's give him time. Not sure how much of his performance is due to the poor timing of him joining the club under the toxic atmosphere

There is definitely a player in their somewhere but he is amazingly inconsistent.

He has good energy, is good at pressing and winning the ball, passing is inconsistent but shows promise and he can break forward and score.

Of the 3 that started in midfield today, I think he's the only one who will be at the club next season. He's a £50m signing and the other 2 are academy players so it obviously should be the case, but he is easily the most talented of the 3.

He was obviously signed as an upgrade on Herrera. The club has signed at least one every summer since he's been at the club, yet Herrera is still in the team.

First half watching the game and I have no idea what game people saw. He was one of the players actually pressing in a very slow paced game sometimes even going higher than Lukaku. Started a move for Sanchez early effort with lovely pass and won the ball high up quickly releasing Lukaku in another move which their keeper saved. Also unlucky they called offside when he got in goal scoring position. he misplaced one pass and was outmuscled in 2/3 duels so if there's a critic is he needs to hit the gym and work on upper body strength. In space he's deadly but if you can't work the situation you'll struggle.

He's 26 in 2 months but still playing like a raw, young talent. Unlike some, I don't see massive improvements happening in his game at this stage.

He’s going nowhere as they wouldn’t come close to recouping half of that transfer fee the way he’s playing.

Yep, i mean he is older and barely better than Pereira and we paid 50m on him. It is pretty crazy when you think about it.

I think he would look better if we had played our full team. We were poor today bar one or two players.

Had we played our full team we would have battered them five nil and fred would have looked better.

Wasn't it when we bought him that supposedly one of the reasons behind this purchase was apparent interest that City had in him?

Joke is on us, I guess.

More bad than good today, but not writing him off just yet. He has some tools to work with.

Another bench/squad player we've over paid for.

Showed nothing so far for me to accept he'll become good.
