Fred - £47m well spent

He had a hand in all three goals we conceded today.

1st goal : gifted them a goal on a platter
2nd goal: jogging alongside and not bothering to put in a tackle outside our penalty box
3rd goal: we were on a break with 4 players against 3 leicester defenders, fred manages to feck up a 5 yard pass in the final third and instead gives the ball to leicester who manage to get a free kick and score from it.

If we're talking players in my lifetime, which is basically since the PL began you are hard pressed to find any worse. Take a look yourself...

Phil Jones is the best shout, but at least he's got injuries as an excuse
Fellaini, Jones, Rojo are clearly worse with a few in there that are arguably as bad. Fred’s had a shocker today but he’s not an atrocious player. Go back a few months and people are praising him to high heaven - we’re a fickle bunch.

There was a time when if you said a negative word about this player you got crucified on here. Truth is he's never been any good so how the feck has it taken so long before it's sunk in with the majority on here.

You mean Premier League winner Phil Jones?

Don’t get me wrong his injuries have derailed him no end but young Jones was at least a player you could rely on in a team expected to win things.

Fred’s performance today isn’t a suprise to any who’ve watched him without tints on.

This thread started well for him. But it's gone south quick. What happened. While never being a world beater, he was doing a job earlier and now he looks more like a liability.

Theres a lot of posters, especially in a few of the cult favourite threads, who pretend that players dont have weaknesses until they are finally explosively exposed for those weaknesses like Fred was today.

I was pointing it out while he was flavour of the month because this was coming. He was having these bad moments in dangerous areas and we were getting away with it. Today we didnt

Fellaini was nowhere near as poor as Fred. Sure he didn't suit our style, but he actually had some moments where he won us games. Rojo and Jones I'll agree are on a level with him and possibly worse, but it's not an outlandish claim like you stated at first seen as how there's about 3 worse at max.

Yeah, to be fair, thought there would’ve been a lot more players with 100 plus apps. He’s poor but he’s had some cracking games for us too, obviously not goal scoring moments like Fellaini but he’s bossed a fair few games for us in the past.

Of course, we can do better but we can in many positions. Wouldn’t say Fred is the crux of all our problems at all.

He looked completely lost when he first arrived, much like Van Der Beek now, but he improved and has shown he can guard the defence well when required. However, he isn't a top class player - he's a decent player who wouldn't look out of place at a club like Leicester, IMHO. I just think United should have much more than players like Fred in midfield. He certainly isn't the only player that can be said of.

Good player who had a bad game. A lot of bi polar fans on here...

Phil Jones was never a calamity even when played in centre midfield against the like of Real Madrid.

I don't recall Jones being as sloppy with the ball as Fred is.

Fellaini was mostly very good for us, people just refused to appreciate him just because he doesn't play Tiki Taka football in midfield. I have nothing but respect for him. Could never fault his efforts.

Fred will never create anything or bang in goals from midfield and he shouldn't be expected to either, thats not his skill set and thats not why he was bought, his job is to break up the oppositions play and shield the defense and pass it to our creative midfielders. What's scandalous is actually pairing him with another defensive midfielder and expecting us to go and dominate games. Him and another DM means our forwards get feck all service so our only output is through the wings. Shaw is good in that role but he was rested, AWB is shite at that role. So from where did our manager think we'll score tonight ?

Fred should be playing behind bruno and pogba and then he will excel in his role.

Agreed, knee jerk reaction galore. He had a bad game but so far this season his good performances have far outweighed the bad ones.

I see a lot of people blaming him for the second goal which I feel is unfair as it was definitely Matic/Telles that were more in the wrong for letting a simple one-two cut them wide open.

Had a bad game in a big game today but the racist abuse he's receiving is disgusting.

Running around like a dog chasing a ball, then concentration goes when he gets it. I rarely remember a player for us misplacing so many 5/6 yards passes. I really think we should cash in on Fred, get an okay amount of money now. Need a player with more intelligence on the ball and defined role. What is Fred? He can't shoot, passing is limited and needs Scott to have defensive discipline. He does have tempo but not the quality to execute real transitions.

Tbh he has been doing bits for the past few games, today was a disaster however. Does he get an assist for the first goal:D?

What a player. Aside from the PSG red where we were all fuming at him, he has really come on strong since Ole’s arrival and made himself an indispensable member to the first team. So remarkably energetic, magnificent at breaking up play and this season especially, has added a real technical ability to his game. Add to that his much improved decision-making, and you have the excellent midfielder that Fred is now.

So far, he’s been one of our players of the season. Imo, it’s fair to say by now that the £47m we shelled out for him was inspired business.
This didn't age well.

It was clear at HT that he needed hooked. The manager choose to leave him on and that's on him

I understand the decision to lump players like Fellaini and Jones (who ultimately reignite the PTSD of the immediate aftermath that was the post-Ferguson era) into the same category as Fred, but ultimately those two are superior players in every regard.

Fellaini has 350 games played for United and Everton, scored 50+ goals in the top 10 capped players in Belgium National team history and was a starter in multiple World Cups/Euros.

Jones has been plagued with injuries, and never lived up to the hype he gained as an 18 year old starting for Rovers, but has been at United for 10 years, won multiple trophies, 20+ England caps including multiple World Cups and a Euro appearance.

Fred, meanwhile, had a decent career in Ukraine, and his biggest international highlight is a two year ban for doping. He did receive a call up (but didn’t make an appearance) at World Cup 2018, but Tite’s decision to include him in the squad isn’t as shocking as the 50 million price tag he had (or the decision that he was worth that price).

He’s absolutely in a category of his own when discussing our worst ever players. Jones and Fellaini had their own relative successes and match winning performances. They shouldn’t be in the same conversation as Fred.

I would take Fellaini over Fred.

What’s an okey amount of money? Who would pay 15m to have this guy? I struggle to think of that club.

Being a PL winner is no guarantee of quality. Eliaquim Mangala won a PL medal with us in the Centurions season. And he couldn't mark a lamp post. And I'm guessing there's quite a few of Ferguson's less successful signings who managed to snare a medal.

Annoying to see him cost us the game today when he should be one of the most important players on the pitch in the role he plays. I don't mind him having a shit game but to do so in a cup game and in which we had a good chance to win it is what makes it more annoying, I hope he will be part of the players we either ship out or have as a squad option, as a starter, we need someone better than him.

His bottom level is not good enough for him to be a starter. He has had more of those sort of 1/10 performances since joining than any player costing close to his fee should.

If he is not getting in shooting positions, we cant win, simple.

Yeah but Jones had a great season or two while we did it. We'll be lucky if Fred ever gets to that level

Workhorse but one of the worst passers of the ball we've had in midfield that I can ever remember.

Disgusted with his form of late but I'd rather him than the tin man Matic.

Never liked the make up of our midfield.

Matic; technically decent DM, but extremely immobile you would think he is 40 already. Sell

Mctominay;Technically limited box to box, relies purely on his physical and macho attitude. Squad role

Fred; is he a box to box nope. You need to contribute at both ends to be called that. Is he a DM nope not positionally discipline enough. He is some sort of defensive energetic player but not a DM. Sell

Van De beek; Technically decent but absolute scared of playing football, side ways, backwards passer, total lack of presence. Has till the end of the year to proof himself.

Pogba; attacking box to box, technically gifted, a physically gifted, needs defensive protection to do his best work. Starting quality

Bruno; Technically gifted, energetic CAM, genuine top footballer. Starting quality.

Promote Hannibal and Buy a DM
That would be a better midfield
Bruno
Pogba new DM

Van De beek
Hannibal mctominay

Was this intentional? I mean he literally got nicknamed ‘Calamity Jones’

Fair point but people portraying Jones as simply injury prone from day one aren’t worth debating with.

Jones was a damn good player on his day, the Mangala equivocation isn’t looking at the players in good faith imo but yes league medals don’t automatically make the player.

There are a portion of fans that believe anyone who criticises the team/players/managers is committing a type of sin and that it's our responsibility to believe that they're all amazing.

He can't pass the ball. Winning a few tackles and running around a lot does not make him a good player when he has this one glaring, rather important flaw.
His passing is so bad that opposition teams are starting to target him specifically now.
