Fred - £47m well spent

Thought he was the worst player on the pitch. Over commits for every single ball, his passing is slow and safe and he has no goal threat at all. That game would never have gone from us had Pogba continued to boss the park.

I think because most of us expect more from our 47M midfielder than “kept the ball moving and helped us to keep possession.” That’s fine for a academy rotation player like McTominay but even he has more strings in his bow.
Fair enough, following that logic there are about 11 players I'd expect more from who played against Everton (Shaw being the exception probably). But there are about 3-4 which mistakes led to us losing points against Everton and Fred is not one of them.

You specifically criticized Fred that we won't be able to control games with him in midfield. 62% possession against Everton side (3% more in 2nd half than in 1st). Everton had 6 shots, only 3 on target.
Just by looking at that and ignoring we lost 3 goals from 3 shots (neither of which was Fred fault), wouldn't you admit we actually did control this game?

EDIT:
Keep in mind we played 2 man midfield against Everton diamond.

EDIT 2:
In MOTD Ian Wright and Dion Dublin repeated a few times "Man United will be dissapointed because they gave away a result after being so dominant in this game". Surely some of this praise goes to Fred and McTominay?

Can't pass, can't shoot, gives away idiotic fouls in dangerous positions every game. Expectations must be at an all time low if people genuinely are satisfied with his output for 50m.

And the worst part is he's probably been our most consistent midfielder over the last 18 months.

Agreed. He's proper shit tonight. Can't do one thing right.

He should be at Coventry or the likes.
Not anywhere near the calibre of player that United need in the midfield

Expectations at this club have gradually been lowered with every passing year, since SAF retired, in fairness.

If his name is Freddy and he is English he would be playing in Championship at best

Absolutely no fault of his own tonight. He was a fecking island.

 I think that’s a little harsh but yeah, he runs around a lot and that’s about it. I’d think you’d need so much more to be a Man United midfielder, but apparently some are really quite pleased with him.

Especially as our attack is struggling and the team in general, needs more creativity.

Even if we had a wonderfully balanced central midfield our strikers have barely had a shot in the last 3 games. That’s the major problem.

If we had a wonderfully balanced midfield, we would be capable of creating chances for our strikers.

We don't have that, so we don't create chances.
Fred being one of the worst culprits.

our forwards create nothing for each other. Nothing. Think about it. That’s literally their main job. Yes a slow or predictable midfield can impact chance creation but their main job is to get the ball to the forwards. They do get the ball to the forwards and then nothing happens.

I understand people defending him, and perhaps criticism of him goes too far. But when you have people going on about how good he is and posting his passing stats to say he’s a top midfielder - it’s just incomprehensible. I don’t think any top half team would want him.

Our forwards create nothing because we have a nonexistent midfield, so Greenwood & Bruno drop deep into our half just to pick up the ball, meanwhile Cavani & Rashford are making runs all match and nobody (Fred) is capable of playing the passes to find them. Hell, Maguire is more often than not having to become a playmaker because our midfield is so shocking.

I get that people like Fred because he's energetic and runs a lot, but the quality is severely lacking. Genuinely lacking, he provides nothing but energy and sideways passing.

Ander Herrera is much, much better than Fred. If we had kept Ander and never signed Fred we'd be better off.

Yer but if when they get the ball the opposition is settled in their defensive positions then it’s much more difficult
Good midfielders get balls in between the lines and behind the defence for the attackers to do something with
Fred and co just give it to our wide men or fullbacks and say “there you go, do something”

Quick, somebody roll out the passing stats. He’s fecking shite. And I’m glad our manager thinks his appalling shooting is funny. I wish I could view it the same way.

Dire. Can’t be selected in games we’re likely to have more of the ball. So bad when we’re in possession

this type of game doesn't suit him, we need someone with more creativity when playing teams like Palace

Nonsense. Watching Herrera in games he was so basic. For psg he’s a bench player. When we played them he was constantly passing back or sideways. Fred regularly plays good whipped balls out to the wings and through the lines.
Mctominay is better than Herrera, it’s why he was sold, and yet, most people here would say that Fred is better than Mctominay.
Don’t get me wrong, I liked Herrera, very passionate and he did have the knack for the odd good goal but he added very little else.

He scored goals playing for Van Gaal and Mourinho, two managers who didn't give the team that much freedom to express themselves. In terms of assisting and making incisive passes, I don't think Fred is capable of the threaded pass that assisted Mata's first goal at Juanfield. How many goals and assists does Fred have for us? Because I bet Herrera has more.

Fred routinely misplaces passes every game, can't shoot the ball and almost always plays safe passes.

Ole should've made the sub earlier. And not necessarily just to sub Fred out, because both him and Matic did very little on the offensive end of things.

We need a new central midfielder. I'm sick and tired of effort merchants being given leeway when they don't have any other qualities besides that.

Anyone thinking this was a good transfer is off their meds. Absolutely baffling.

He’s got his utility, but he’s better in games when we’re being overrun. He’ll be better against City than here. Tonight he was especially bad though, felt like he gave the ball away more than he found his man.

Yeah, zero creativity on the ball. Tends to play to the opposition when it’s time to make a telling pass.

I've been critical of him lately but don't see what he's being criticized for tonight. Other than one poor free kick he gave away in a dangerous position (and one poor decision to shoot), what's he supposed to do? We could have had Pogba, Scholes or Xavi in the midfield tonight and they wouldn't have been able to create anything with the level of movement and ball control that our attackers were showing.

Fred, along with perhaps Bruno, was the only one in the team trying to actually speed up the tempo and get the ball moving fast enough to pull Palace out of position. Was it a great game? Of course not, but he was certainly our best of the front six.
