Frank Lampard | Coventry City?

Hopefully 39 points is enough to stay up because I can see us getting pretty much zero more.

Playing City, Arsenal, Utd away still to go...

Benzema scores a hattrick every match seemingly, next.

More ridiculously, we played well against Villa and Liverpool. Didn't even get above 1 xG today.

I had previously thought the loss against Southampton was the worst performance of the season. This one today was much worse.

It is surprising that bringing back a shite manager that has already failed at the club didn't instantly improve things.

Just saw this

Chelsea have played in more games (30) than they’ve scored goals (29).

My best guess is that Potter might have had some clause in his contract whereby they could sack him for a heavily reduced payoff if certain performance objectives aren't met. They might have been able to bin him off on the cheap with him sitting in the bottom half for example, but it could have cost them a lot more if he sneaked his way into 8th or something by the end of the season.

If that's the case what they've done makes some sense, but it's still funny to see fat tory Frank squirm on the touchline while another one of his teams get stuffed.
I’m not sure chelsea are bothered about doing things on the cheap when they’ve already thrown away a large chunk of £600m.

That’s not surprising considering we have scored 0 in the last 3 games. We now also have more losses than wins. Shambles of a season.

Southampton was the same as Villa and Liverpool, no one to convert chances.

That's down to the poor transfers and squad makeup. The Owners.

Just don't get how the owners could think Lampard was a remotely sensible idea.

Well this is why hiring Lampard as caretaker was a good thing. Let a guy who credit and lots of goodwill in the bank steer this shitshow of a season to an end and then allow the new manager to take over clean and fresh for the new season.

Why would any manager want to have the stench of this season as part of their overall record?

I’m sure you could have found someone better as interim manager? I just don’t see the fit.

It would seem you need someone who isn’t going to take shit and get a grip of things. Lampard isn’t that guy and has already been publicly mugged by some of the same players following his last stint. It’s a mind boggling appointment.

It’s all being set up for Conte’s return in July: “Rememba we cam from de decimo place!”

If Liverpool win their games in hand on Chelsea, they’ll be 10 points ahead of them. That’s how bad chelsea have been!

Potter would have done just fine taking the full force of it. Players didn't exactly have respect for Potter to begin with and questioned him once the appointment was made. Lampard is a clown and just keeps failing forward because he can. He's so oblivious to it all. It's like he welcomed going back into a relationship that has failed 3 times and the partner repeatedly laughed and mocked him yet he goes back. Absolutely shameless moron manager.

I disagree. I think we should have kept Potter but once the decision was made to fire him, getting Lampard in to manage the final 45 days or so was sensible. He’ll see the season in a way we probably would have done anyway had we kept Potter so he’s just a placeholder to keep the fans happy until the find a permanent manager.

So you really don’t see any better option in World football for a club like Chelsea but to get Lampard back? I’m pretty surprised tbh.

Such a pointless appointment. He’s not experienced and qualified enough to inspire the team and elevate the football club. He needs a ‘project’ where he can learn on the job and mould the team to his ideas over time that he’s afforded at a club with low (immediate) expectations.

If you’re going for an unproven / underqualified manager then you may as well stick with the guy you believed in to be your future 6 months back. I mean it’s not as if Potter was a toxic personality tearing everything down.

Why is this better than Potter?

Who was willing to come in for 8 weeks as a temp on a days notice? I can't think of any.

This season was over before todays result. We could chuck £50 million quid at Alex Ferguson to come in for a few weeks and we'd probably only finish 8th instead of 10th.

Getting a temp in lets the club take their time picking the new manager, something they couldn't really do with Potter still in place.

A caretaker who has the added benefit of getting the fans back onside? No I don’t, but even if I did, I don’t think there’s any manager out there who could be a better caretaker who would somehow save the season, and if saving the season is off the table, then does it matter who the caretaker is?

They're closer to the drop zone than 5th place.
How does it change what I said?

Before this round of fixtures, assuming Todd’s gang lose all their games, all three of Everton, Forest and Bournemouth need to pick up 12 pts from their last 9, and make up a 17 GD deficit at minimum (Everton). Now, two of them gained none with 1 less game to play.

This is a weird season with way too many teams fighting the drop, which works in their favour. It’s like a reverse title race, if you are far enough ahead with a decent gap, incredibly unlikely all of the relegation fodders suddenly pull together a 50% win rate to threaten you.

I agree that once Potter is deemed surplus you have to let him go. But today was the worst performance of the season. Why can't Lampard just rudder the ship. No, instead straight in and changed to a 433 and the team looked lost.

You are available, willing and better than Lampard.

Clearlake have really muddied the waters at Chelsea in record time. Impressive hatchet job.

To me it’s just an easy option and again highlights there’s zero plan in place.

Lampard returning after a failed stint and Chelsea and Everton is really poor. As I say I can’t see how he commands the dressing room as there’s players in the squad now that weren’t overly complimentary about him when he left last time. Even some of the Everton players suggested their club is far more disciplined under Dyche and Lampard was more of a mate than a gaffer.

Guess it depends what you want but I’d of thought someone who could get some standards in place and root out the idiots would have been more useful.

Depends on your definition of ‘saving the season’, surely?

5 games from glory in the CL and even without that, a shot at EL/ECL, unless you happen to believe that no Europe at all is better than those two, which is rather elitist given the league’s competitiveness and your bloated squad.

What about Benitez, though? Wouldn’t he have been a better caretaker manager? His stock isn’t exactly high right now, so maybe he would have accepted to shepherd Chelsea for the remaining games. Not a fan favorite, I guess, but definitely a better manager than Frank. I don’t remember him even being mentioned for the role.

Of course Benitez would be better, even Di Matteo again or perhaps an international coach who can dual role for a bit.

Some are suggesting there’s literally not one other option bar Lampard which I don’t really get.

I'd cost way more than Lampard and wouldn't come in on a temp basis.

You should be ashamed of yourself, ready to exploit your favorite club.

But seriosuly, I agree with your points. Even if people think that the season isn't over due to the CL, a manager that has lost the trust of his players is unlikely to be the one galvanizing them for a cup run.

He's not there to "command the dressing room". He's there because someone has to put the cones out and pick the team for the next few weeks while they pick a new manager.

What did any of the current players say which was critical of Lampard? Not calling you a liar, just don't know who said what of the current lot.

As for Everton players saying they prefer the current manager, what else are they going to say? Has any player ever said they preferred a previous manager to the current one? Even when Moyes replaced Fergie, none of the players said it was better under Sir Alex (whilst Moyes was boss).
