Forlan Update....

Looks like we made a bid last night for him which was turned down, presumably because Boro had made a better offer earlier in the day. The reports say we are talking with his agents (presumably the club as well) today and there is definitely an opportunity to snatch him by offering to pay upfront (which boro can't do - we've got plenty of money at the moment though due to Cole and Stam sales). We'll probably find out in the next today or tomorrow. Reason for our hesitation though has become clear, Kenyon has been on a business trip to the Far East and has only just returned.

CHAMPIONS SET TO SNATCH FORLAN
Thursday January 17 2002

By Pete Gill

Manchester United are set to pip Middlesbrough to the signature of Diego Forlan, according to the BBC.

The Beeb report that representatives of the Uruguayan striker are in Manchester today (Thursday) thrashing out terms for a deal that would see the 24-year-old move to Old Trafford before the Champions League's January 31 transfer deadline.

Middlesbrough had reportedly agreed a £6m transfer with Forlan’s club Independiente, but the move fell through because Boro wanted to pay in instalments while the cash-strapped Argentinian club insisted on the fee being paid up front.

Should Forlan join the champions it could well scupper any chances of Paolo di Canio moving north, with United thought to be refusing to match West Ham’s asking price of £3.5m for the 33-year-old Italian.

BORO'S FORLAN HOPES FADE
Thursday January 17 2002

Steve McClaren has vowed to continue to fight for Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan.

The Middlesbrough boss has already made a £6million bid for the Independiente striker.

But hopes of securing his signature have hit a stumbling block.

It had been suggested the 22-year-old would fly to England with Boro's chief executive Keith Lamb to finalise the move, but things have not gone to plan.

"We're at a stalemate at the present time," McClaren told the club's official website, www.mfc.co.uk.

"There are that many people involved, I think we've come away from the deal at the present moment and we're just waiting for someone else to make a move.

"We knew big clubs around Europe were all in, that's why we tried to take the bull by the horns and do the deal quickly.

"I don't think it's working out as we planned, but we're not giving up yet and we're fully prepared over the next couple of days to move on."

It takes all of a few hours to push a deal through.

And the chaos continues:

UNITED WAIT AT THE AIRPORT IN BID TO BEAT BORO

Independiente striker Diego Forlan will walk straight into a
tug-of-war between Manchester United and Middlesbrough
when he arrives in England on Friday to sort out his future.

The 22-year-old appeared to have sealed a £6.9million
move to the Riverside earlier this week, but manager
Steve McLaren saw former boss Sir Alex Ferguson step in
at the 11th hour.

United have also been tracking Forlan for some time
and have made a strong move to snatch the player
from the grasp of the side they face in the FA Cup fourth
round in 10 days' time.

Independiente general secretary Andres Ducantenzeilerclaims
also confirmed Old Trafford officials will meet with Forlan
when he arrives at Gatwick Airport in an attempt to seal
a last-gasp move.

But Boro will also hold more talks with the player on Friday,
though it looks as if the Premiership champions are now in
pole position to claim the talented Uruguayan's services.

Ducantenzeilerclaims said: "In principle, the transfer to Middlesbrough
is settled, but we do know that Manchester United have
expressed interest in the player.

"At the end of the day it is not us but Forlan who must decide
which club he will play for."

Forlan, who scored 20 goals last season, reportedly stalled
Middlesbrough by requesting his share of the fee in advance.
But McLaren is still hopeful he can persuade him to join his
Riverside revolution.

"We're at a stalemate at the present time," said McLaren.
"There are that many people involved, I think we've come away
from the deal at the present moment and we're just waiting
for someone else to make a move.

"We knew big clubs around Europe were all in, that's why we
tried to take the bull by the horns and do the deal quickly. I don't
think it's working out as we planned, but we're not giving up yet."

Quite simple ..

If he has a problem choosing betwen say Whelan or Ruud, Ince or Keano , Becks or Greening as teammates ...even a nano seconds hesitation, then he is not our man , not worth the hassle ....remember when Blackburn offered Keano more money way back ...What did THE MAN do ...walked straight to Old Trafford for the GLORY and Romance (and subsequent wealth ) OF BEING A RED ,....if Forlan cant see it .........

Any player who knows how the game works (i.e. NOT Mr Collywobbles or Mr Anelka ) will never say something derogatory or the like about a possible future employer. If Forlan started babbling about United as his dream destination - and then ended up in Middlesbrough - that would amount to a pretty bad start in the new shirt, don't you think?

Anyway, my suspicion is that his all-round game isn't really top notch since Independiente only ask £7m for his services and since no other big clubs seem to be joining the bidding. I mean, 22 or 23 years old and a goal-scoring international - players in that category usually cost at least £10-12m I'd say... You probably couldn't buy, e.g., Bellamy for £10m. And we wouldn't want HIM at United, would we?

What do the experts on these matter such as Raoul Roy et al. think about his ability and potential?

I know but some of the posturing and haggling that we are doing resembles an old lady at a sunday market rather than a professional football club.
