Uruguay striker Diego Forlan could be on his way to Manchester United.

Reports have linked United with a £4.5million move for the 22-year-old.

His club Independiente deny receiving an offer from United.

But they admit that they have been approached by a third party with interest from a number of European clubs, including the Old Trafford side.

"We have not received an official offer but we know through third parties that there are clubs that are interested in the player, including Manchester United," said club vice-president Fernando Sciacalugga.

Argentina is in a state of financial crisis following the devaluation of the peso and, as most top players are paid in US dollars, the Buenos Aires club are willing to listen to offers which will bring in foreign currency.

Forlan, who joined Independiente in the 1998-1999 season, is ready to leave after already expressing a wish to move to Europe.

"Independiente are a selling club who are willing to sell at the right price," added Sciacalugga.

"For the players, Europe is a professional temptation

Tabloids are saying that boro is in a stronger position to sign forlan

Looks like only di canio will be our only striker signing

That's good because I want to see the cash being spent on a defender

Well it wouldn't effect that much on buying another defender... you see Di canio can come here with a price of 3 mill, and Forlan 4.5 mill, that money we already have from Cole's selling (8 mill) , and if yorke goes, then well we will have extra cash to spend on a defender.

forlan looks like he will cost 6.5 million

You'll see someone right before or on the 31st itself. United always leave it late!

FOLAN has agreed terms with Boro and the deal is pretty much done !

This moves me to ask .... Why the feck are Boro signing a great young prospect from south america who we and other european giants were chasing?????

Uinted we in pole position to sign him if he was up for a move to England ... so why has it collapsed,
did we change our minds on the players ability and let a lesser team take him of us???
or what more likley...
did the board tit about to much and let a shit team like Boro capture what looked to be a good asset to the club ????

Not very pleasing to know that fecking BORO can temp players away from us ... nice people skills and negotiation

I doubt they tempted him away from us. We were probably unwilling to pay the asking price (presumably because we didn't rate him as high), or else we're after other players.

There was reportedly no contact between United and Independiente regarding Forlan...maybe SAF is after someone else...and besides, if this guy was as special as you guys made him out to be, then why wouldn't other European Giants be looking to sign him as a long term prospect...I do know Juve were looking for a young striker when Salas was injured..I dont know if Salas still is injured..

The usual. The board thinks he is too expensive.I doubt we will see a new signing. You cant be cheaper than the plc board.Soon they will sell Becks and dont buy a replacement like with Stam and now Cole?

Thats not very fair on the PLC. Atleast have something to back up your claims.

Fergie decided to sell Stam, he also decided he wanted to bring Blanc as replacement - he got him. Fergie decided to sell Andy Cole - he did. Replacement? We'll talk on January 31st.

As for Forlan, some journalist invented a story we were hot on his heels a couple of weeks ago. So blood what? That doesn't mean it's true. If the gaffer believed he's so good and really wanted to bring him, the PLC would have paid the reported 7m.

One can only assume we were either not after him or didn't think he's that good. We've been linked with South American based players quite a few times over the past few years, how many have we signed?

actually lazio and the loonypool were after him not quite long ago...

I've seen Forlan play on TV once. It was on Channel5 i think very late in the night.

Anyway, he is very much like Newcastle's Bellemy.
But with a slightly better finishing, more creative and taller than Bellemy.

Ohhh and.....I think Fergie will sign him...eventually.
What I think now is how much he has got to spend?
Maybe he has a bigger target to sign! Ronaldo maybe? lol Maybe just maybe.

I agree - even though I am quick to jump on the plc's penny pinching ways, they did release 47 million pounds in the summer for purchases

Let's see if anyone comes in by Jan 31st although I would not be too unduly upset if no-one does, perhaps a little disappointed if a defender does not join us.

The real transfer moves will be in the summer where we MUST move quickly as two of our defenders are stepping down and possibly yorke will bw gone by then

The new manager will have to buy at least two defenders and a new striker before the new season starts.

Ichk..Our main priority at the moment is a striker. We really only have 2 committed to the cause R.V.N. & Ole. Yorke just couldnt be arsed at the moment and is going through the motions until he moves on (eventually). We need good cover now in case we have an injury crisis with Ruud or Ole, And god forbid they both went down! So a new striker is imperative. The defence is playing well now and with Brown,O'Shea & Johnsen back in the next few weeks things are looking better in that dept.

I would love to see a striker come onboard to replace cole and yorke but at least we have the option of playing giggs as a striker if need be.

Even though we are getting a few defenders back from injury ina couple of weeks, what worries me is that we just don't have enough class in that department no matter how many defenders we already have. For instance, the right-back position. Phil Neville just doesn't cut it in the first team. We need to strengthen this area as well as central defence.

The thing is ,at least we'll have cover for any defensive injuries or suspensions, but with Giggs "dodgy" hamstring needing constant looking after,we are always open to probs. in attack. Believe me, i would love to see Giggsy flying down the wing in every match, but even SAF knows that aint gonna happen and has said so.He'll only be used in moderation and (imo) will only start a handful of games this season, most of them will be in the CL. Even Wenger & Houllier recognize the need for 4 strikers,so the sooner its remedied the better. ;)

Well, I hope either a striker or a defender will be coming onboard come Jan 31st

Even better if both of them were signed

I'm keeping my fingers crossed....

I agree. I am not sure United were even interested in Forlan, just agents / managers stirring stuff up to gain Forlan a move, which ultimately worked. After United spent about £50 million on three players in the summer, the United board are probably not willing to spend a great deal so late in Fergie's reign. If this is the case, it shows why the board were willing to sell Stam ( Though Fergie pulled the strings ) and Cole and further pursue the cheaper options, i.e. Blanc and Di Canio. Good business imo. Though relatively older, they are cheaper and can do a good job till the new manager comes, by which time United can go after the younger, more expensive players.

i think that maybe there was no truth whatsoever of us signing him. There was no quote from any man utd spokesman saying we were in negotiations for forlan or even interested in him.

Just as we all thought it was over . . .
www.soccernet.com reports:

Sir Alex Ferguson and Old Trafford chief executive Peter Kenyon are desperately trying to reopen discussions for Forlan, 24, after it was discovered that representatives from Middlesbrough had travelled to Argentina to secure the services of the highly-rated Uruguayan striker.
Boro succeeded in agreeing a £6million fee with Independiente for a player who holds an Italian passport, but then encountered difficulties over the method of payment.
United had made the mistake of believing they were the only club interested - and their lack of urgency in completing the deal allowed Boro to make their approach.
Boro offered to pay Independiente in instalments, which denied them the chance to conclude the deal before United could respond. Boro are trying to overcome that stumbling block.
In United's favour is the fact that Forlan would rather move to the English champions, but the transfer is complicated by the fact the player's contract is owned by a number of parties.
In that respect, having a team of negotiators in Argentina gives Boro an edge.
Ferguson sees Forlan as a replacement for Andy Cole and wants to sign him before the Champions League deadline on January 31.
Ferguson has confirmed he is in the market for a right-sided full back by declaring he wants Gary Neville to continue at centre back for the rest of the season.
He has seen his side surge to the top of the table on the back of seven wins with Neville operating as an emergency central defender alongside Laurent Blanc.
He is interested in Barcelona full back Michael Reiziger. The Holland international, ineligible for the Champions League, is available on loan or on a permanent basis.
Ferguson said of Neville: 'Gary has been doing well, and in the form he's showing now I wouldn't want to take him out of the centre of defence.
'He has the natural ability of a centre back. He's a good organiser and he's a talker, which is very important in that position.'
Ferguson wants at least one new defender before the Champions League deadline with Everton's Abel Xavier and Chelsea's Marcel Desailly interesting him.
But a Reiziger deal remains an option and there has been contact between the clubs.

So if this is true, then pathetic negotiation skills and a lack of complacency are to blame.

I have always doubted our negotiation tactics as we seem to continually lose out to other clubs (and not just the real madrids and milans of this world)for good players and especially promising youngsters.

Go pick up some negotiation skills from a special course, Kenyon!

United78 i just read this on planetfootball.com :

UNITED BACK IN FOR FORLAN?
by Mark Buckingham

MANCHESTER UNITED have made a late move to hijack Middlesbrough's swoop for striker Diego Forlan, according to reports.
Middlesbrough have already agreed a fee of £6 million with Forlan's club Independiente, but a swift conclusion to the deal has been delayed due to a wrangling over payments.

That has re-opened the door for the Premiership champions to renew their interest in the Uruguayan, who is keen to move to England.

The Red Devils were the first side believed to have declared a willingness in acquiring the services of the 22-year-old hot shot, but they had made no official approach to his cash-stricken club.

But reports now indicate that United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and chief executive Peter Kenyon are striving to open negotiations to pinch Forlan from under Boro's nose.

United are eager to snap up a striker before the Champions League deadline at the end of January following the £7.5 million departure of Andy Cole to Blackburn and the uncertainty regarding Dwight Yorke's future at Old Trafford.

Ferguson has already had a bid for West Ham's Paolo Di Canio rejected and a double raid for the Italian and Forlan, who will not require a work permit, cannot be discounted.

Still though, i don't feel like we are going to get him...

UNITED FAIL WITH FORLAN BID
by Graeme Bailey

EXCLUSIVE
PLANETFOOTBALL.COM can exclusively reveal that Manchester United have had a bid rejected for Uruguayan ace Diego Forlan within the last 48 hours, as the player's impending move to Middlesbrough draws to a conclusion.
The English champions originally inquired about Forlan four weeks ago, but since then Middlesbrough have firmed up their interest and opened talks with his club Independiente.

And now planetfootball.com can reveal that United have failed with a bid for the 22-year-old.

"Manchester United followed Diego about a month ago, but I know that Independiente have now rejected a bid from them yesterday evening (Wednesday)," Forlan's European agent Daniel Bolotnikoff told planetfootball.com.

"I don't know why Independiente refused this offer, either it was not good enough, or because they have already talked with Middlesbrough.

"Diego cannot decide where he wants to go, it is up to Independiente, and as such Diego has only talked to Middlesbrough.

"He is more than happy to go to Middlesbrough - if the talks are finalised, at this moment Manchester United does not exist for Diego, Middlesbrough is the only team. Today is Middlesbrough, not Manchester.

Bolotnikoff confirmed that the deal, agreed by Boro's chief executive Keith Lamb with his Argentine counterparts overnight, could be completed today.

The transfer looked to be breaking down on Wednesday when Independiente refused to accept Boro's proposed offer of 36 individual installments, but Lamb has now negotiated terms on a deal that will see a one-off payment on completion of the transfer, then two further payments after 24 months and 36 months.

The transfer fee is around the $9.5 million mark, which will see Independiente receive around $4.5 million for 60 percent of the player, while co-owner Samuel Liberman will pocket just over $3 million.

Forlan himself will get over $1 million, with his agents getting just under $1 million - there is also a small fee to be paid to the Argentinian Football Federation.

"He will probably arrive in England today, [Marcos] Franchi is continuing talks, but we think that Diego will probably move at some point today," Bolotnikoff added.

"I think we can resolve our differences and then I will meet up with Diego in England."

Club officials Fernando Sciaccaluga (vice-president) and Andres Ducatenzeiler (general secretary) will travel with Forlan to England, while Bolotnikoff will take over from Franchi, while he stays in South America.

Speaking last night Forlan himself confirmed that England was his first choice destination. "If it had to choose a country, it wanted to go to England," he said.

"I know the English language, and it is chance for me to perfect it.

Forlan did, however, admit how sad he was to be leaving Independiente.

"It hurts to leave the club that gave me the opportunity me to play."

The story tells everything...

As we know there are still differences between Boro and Independiente, the story tells nothing. They are probably still trying to push Boro to do the deal THEIR way.

Planet football exclusive resources are always through people who have something to gain from those stories.

Maybe your right, but does this mean that United didn't really make a bid for him??

BBC put their neck on the line.

Manchester United are poised to snatch Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan from under the noses of Middlesbrough.
BBC Sport Online understands the Premiership champions have made a last-gasp bid to sign the player.

And it is believed Forlan's representatives are in Manchester discussing a possible transfer.

Boro had reportedly agreed a £6m fee with Independiente after the 24-year-old accepted the proposed personal terms.

But a stumbling block over the method of payment has held up the move.

Boro want to pay in instalments, but cash-strapped Independiente want the money in one lump sum.

They need the cash up front to pay the wages of players and staff.

It now seems United have made a mistake in believing they were the only club interested in signing Forlan.

However, in United's favour is the fact that Forlan would rather move to the English champions than struggling Boro.

Ferguson sees Forlan as a replacement for Andy Cole and would want to sign him before the Champions League deadline on 31 January.

A possible deal for West Ham's Paolo di Canio appears no closer to reaching its conclusion with talks between the two clubs seemingly deadlocked.

If we want him, we'll get him. If not, than we probably don't want him or don't want him that much. Thats the end of that one for me.
