Gaming Football Manager 2010

I just got United's tenth CL trophy, as well as the league back after City had gotten it the season before... in our 150th year as a club.

They gave me a chance to say that I was the special one in an interview this season... I went with "my CV's prolly somewhat unique in the footballing world, yes."

Fast players with low mental stats are so good in this game. Febian Brandy worked wonders for me as Basel and Welbeck has done the same with me for Man Utd. Who needs Edin Dzeko as their advanced forward/poacher when you have Welbeck?

I find Welbeck always works well because of his height, pace and strength for his age which can of course be developed.

Do you get him to be a good aerial threat? Physically, he seems like he should be able to compete for balls in the air, but mentally he's got awfully low bravery and aggression.

Bah, I've got two left wingers in the squad (Ribery and Jovetic) and both are out with long term injuries. I've had to play Anderson on the left and use an 18 year old regen who will come good, but really isn't ready yet. Considering playing Fabio as a left winger actually.

Two, poacher/complete forward, deeplying forward/target man depending on the skill of the players

I can never be arsed changing my tactic depending on who's playing though. I like a 1 size fits all kind of tactic :)

That might come back to haunt you. Though I agree somewhat, changing the tactic too often isn't very smart either. I've stuck to the same template for at least 4-5 seasons now, and it's worked very well. If I have injuries and the reserves don't fit the roles as well as my original players did, they rarely fit bad enough to make me change it.

I usually just create 1 tactic and use it all the time, it's never let me down in the past. I just can't be bothered spending time tweaking for individual players etc.

I created a 4231 style formation with United which worked really well right off the bat (won my worst 17 premier league games concedeing just 9 goals) but i like tactics with 2 strikers because i like buying them :D

So what i need to create is a 442 (or variant of) so i can by strikers but that won't just ship goals every game.

I'm thinking something like:

Code:
[CENTER]GK
RB CB CB LB
DM
RM - CM - LM
ST ST[/CENTER]

Obviously with a few tweaks on how attacking certain players are etc etc.

I'm playing a wingless diamond formation myself. I do miss having wingers sometimes, but it works very well. It also means the AMC should be quick and a good finisher.

Hmmm i would miss playing wingers though (i like buying those too :)) and i always find that unless your amc is really really really good they tend to perform a bit shit.

So does anyone know of any good custom databases that would update my 2008 game to 09/10?

I found a really really good one. It cost about £15 and it's called FM2010.

Well, mine the last few years have been Aguero (though he mostly played poacher), Pjanic and now Coutinho. So yeah, this isn't a formation you'd use with Stoke.

I do find that my fullbacks play incredibly well, though. They usually have quite a few assists, and their ratings are often among the best. They will need to be quick and good dribblers, though.

Do people play with 1 or 2 strikers?

Depends. I have two formations: 4-5-1 and 4-4-2

Both of them have the same back four (GK, two fullbacks on automatic, a limited defender and a central defender - both on defend).

Then the midfields both have two wingers (attacking). The 4-5-1 central midfield both play in CM (as in no AMC), one deeplying and one advanced playmaker (support for both). The 4-4-2 has one ball-winning midfielder, and one advanced playmaker (in the AMC role).

As for up front, the 4-5-1's striker is a complete forward, whilst the 4-4-2 uses a Trequartista and a Poacher.

Hmph, I get the feeling this is about as clear as mud.

I came 3rd with West Ham in my first year as manager, I played a diamond with Jimenez as AMC behind Cole and Hines. Jimenez played like a man possessed and scored a feck load.

I've been playing this recently. Downloaded it after breaking my arm. Have got Exeter into the PL but it took 4 seasons.

I play this formation:

CF - CF
AM
LM - CM - CM - RM

CB - CB - CB

The wingers can be either wing backs, defensive wingers, wide mids or wingers depending on how attacking I want to be. Usually I have an advanced forward and a complete forward. They score a ton but my midfield barely chips in. I switched from 442 because my midfield never scored, and I never scored from crosses. Most of my goals come from through balls to the strikers. I'm contemplating switching to a a flat back 4 in the Prem to prevent being torn apart.

Does anyone else have preset home and away formations? I find I can't win away unless I have the settings to rigid and counter attack with a defence minded midfielder. By habit I now change it every game but I'm not sure if it's necessary.

I've started to tinker with the mentality recently. I went 33 games unbeaten in the prem with Liverpool after I'd adjusted to it. I usually start with standard, then if I'm away to a better team I'll go for defensive or counter, until really late on when I'll go for contain.

If I'm at home against anyone I usually wait to see how standard goes, then if it's not working I'll go for contain and then maybe attacking.

These are some of my tactics I've developed. They're pretty much as attacking as you can get, so if you're in a side that has fantastic attacking ability, but is not great defensively then it's perfect.

Number 1:

It's a 4-2-3-1 effectively. The striker up top can be changed into complete forward, advanced striker etc. and should still bang them in. Wingers hould contribute a fair amount of goals as well.

Number 2:

This has two strikers that can be pretty much changed to anything you want. One of the wingers is an advanced playmaker, which can be changed to suit your players. If you aren't comfortable with the deep lying playmaker, just switch it to an anchor man.

I switch between 3-4 formations depending on the match;

A wide and a narrow variant of 4-2-3-1:

Wide:

GK
RB CB CB LB

CM CM
RW --- AM --- LW
ST

Narrow:

GK
RB CB CB LB

CM CM
AM AM AM
ST

The narrow one is my main formation, I switch it to the wide one depending on what formation the opponent plays - if they have good defensive midfielders then I play the wide one to try to avoid them.

Against the tougher teams I switch to a 4-1-2-2-1 type thing, as follows:

GK
RB CB CB LB
DM
CM CM
RW ----------- LW
ST

Finally, when playing as Arsenal, I adopted a different formation which I had success with - its great if you have the players for it and want to play Arsenal/Barca style football.

GK
CB CB
RWB --- DM --- LWB
CM CM
AM
RWF --------- LWF

(WF as in Wing Forward - a nice fast striker to play out wide).
The key with this formation is you need a very good AM who will attack the box in the absence of a Centre Forward, and your DM needs to be the opposite, pulling back to join the CBs when the Wingbacks attack.

My reserve league doesn't seem to be running for some reason, so I'm having to arrange reserve friendlies. It's getting on my tits now.

Which country are you in? Italy doesn't have a reserve league, it seems. It's only U18 and senior. If I get too many youngsters (which I've had a few times) I just put most of them as available for the reserves, and then arrange like 30 matches between the U18s and the Reserves.

Now I just make sure to loan out every player that can be loaned out (17 and older?).

I'm having problems loaning players at the moment. I've got a shit load of wonderkids that I want to get first team experience, but no one seems to want to take them even though their stats are quality.

I loan most of mine to feeder clubs (I started with quite a few). Most of them are in Serie B, some lower. If I have some very good youngsters that I can't quite fit in my team, I either loan them to my couple of (they bounce up and down, really) feeder clubs in Serie A, or other countries (like Boro), or I loan them out to whoever wants them, if they want them, and if they'll get to play.

I've also started letting my very good youngsters play more in the first team, even if they aren't quite up to scratch yet. That's how I made Espen Thon so good so quick (the midfielder I posted earlier). I'm currently doing it to a striker as well. It makes a world of difference if they get to play.

England. It was fine the first four seasons, but now my group has disappeared. The other groups are still there.

This game is fecking retarded sometimes. Fans disappointed with this result:

I don't get it.

Do you mean they didn't get paid a lot? It doesn't say he cost that much, it says that the sum was a part of his transfer fee, probably because he scored 30 league goals.

No, what I'm saying is they stuck a clause in the transfer that says once he scored 30 league goals they would pay 16.75m?! On top of paying £24m already for him.
