ive been trying to concuct a new formation, behold!

form1.jpg

Its been working pretty nicely so far. I use the wing forwards (WFs) to add width to what would otherwise be much too narrow a formation.

Its meant to take advantage of the modern game - most teams (and this extends to real life) use quite attacking fullbacks, leaving space there to be exploited. We all saw how much havoc Ronaldo wreaked by using that space to get round and split apart the CBs.
Using the forwards out wide means they need to be fast, basically with winger-like qualities (Saivet, Ronaldo, Bojan and Marquinhos are great choices), capable of cutting inside and crossing well.
The "issue" is of course, that by putting the forwards out wide, there is no traditional strikers/forwards in the team, meaning you need to have an excellent attacking midfielder (Aguero, Rooney, Marquinhos are good again) to provide that attacking impetus.

You get all the benefits of the diamond midfield - possessional domination. Its important to have the two MCs given a bit of creative freedom so that they can drift out wide when necessary. The attacking midfielder needs to have a lot of attacking quality to make up for the lack of a striker, similarly the defensive midfielder needs to be a real makelele/mascherano "destroyer" type player, to cover for the lack of truly defensive fullbacks.

Basically, you require a lot of bloody good players to pull it off - almost every player needs to be world class to make it work, but when it does, its unstoppable. The wingbacks need to be able to provide a lot of width to your team whilst supporting defensively. The DM needs to be a real destroyer and act almost as a 3rd CB. The CBs themselves need to be rock solid in order to not become isolated and outnumbered in attack (even with the DM getting back and helping). Whilst in attack you need the AM and even the 2 MCs need to provide the central attacking drive in the absence of a centre forward.

When you can get it working its a thing of beauty.

Madness!

I played a similar system for a while because all my strikers were injured, except with AML/AMR's and DL/DR's and it worked fine, although I got punished a couple of times. Interesting set up if you've got the right players.

For my old Lazio team I ended up using a 3-2-3-1-1, with wing backs, and defensively I was unbeatable, even if my 3 central midfielders were mainly attacking. So I think defensively your setup will be solid, at least if it isn't you could use a DC instead of DM. But the two wingers, I didn't even know you could move them that far up the pitch! Would be interesting to see if they get goals from those positions.

true enough. the one team i simply cant seem to beat (without multiple saves/reloads) is bloody Arsenal.

Join the club, always had problems with them. Though I never reloaded :p I think my win to loss ratio was 60:40 or something though.

It didn't help that Carlos Vela had an ability of 197 in that game, which doesn't make sense cause in any other game I've played it's been around the 170 mark.

nearly finished my 3rd season in the prem.... or 2nd whatever it was from the other time i posted...

33 games gone... i am .....2nd! 1 point behind man city so hopefully i can go on and win it ... plus im in the quarter finals of the uefa cup ... will post how i do / post pictures after the season..

Vela was around the 175 mark in my game - and i bought him for £6m odd.

He failed to live up to expectations frankly, sold him off for £30m last summer, to make space for my home grown winger Nicky Martin (who has a PA of 199) who is starting to come through the ranks now.

UBERscholes, yeah you can play Wing Forwards - but they do count as forwards/strikers rather than wingers, in terms of their positional ability (ie a FC will play fine there, whereas a winger (who isnt proficient as a striker) wont). My wingers play almost that high up the pitch as it is, the main gain is having an extra man (or extra 2 men) in midfield.

The second formation ive been trying is effectively a big "X", cant be bothered copy/pasting from the game, so here is a diagram;

------------GK-------------
RB----------CB----------LB
------DM---------DM------
------------MC------------
------AM---------AM------
WF---------------------WF

obviously, you are packing out the midfield with this one. total domination of possession is the name of the game, your DMs need to - between them - act as a 2nd central defender, they need to make sure the proper CB doesnt get outnumbered at the back, so they need to be good at tracking back and closing down the opposition.
Similarly, the AMs between them need to be responsible for not only getting a lot of your goals, but also dropping back into the middle. Just as the DMs combine to act as a 2nd CB, the AMs need to combine to act as a striker alongside your WFs.

Just trying out some new tactics - relying on Wing Forwards instead of a traditional striker.

Wank!!! lol ---- finished the season 1 point behind man city.... and lost in the quarters ... not bad i guess will post pictures in a minute or when i get some spare time :)

It's a shame that 2009 tactics don't let you make the run arrows go sideways. I had a good formation which was like this:

--- <---ST-----ST---> ---
^
l
l
------------AMC------------
-------> <-------
| |
| |
ML-----------------------MR

------------DMC------------

DL------CB-------CB------DR

-------------GK-------------

Attacking midfielder usually scored most of the goals, with strikers peeling off sideways to draw out defenders to give him space. They mostly played as wingers, with the actual wingers running to support the AMC.

Not a great team, if I'm honest :p

Jacob have you not bothered spending money or something?

I like nurturing my own youngsters rather buying. This way I find the game more realistic for longer, which consequently makes me play one save for longer.

Also, as a student of economics I love running the club in a good way, economically speaking. I know, it's just a game but what the hell..

The team is great, I've won the league 4 times on the trot, as well as 2 CL trophies.

rite..... i doubt many people are interested but ill post anyway..

these are some of my players - there not the best but they got me 2nd place with weymouth !

so yeh thats that as ive said before on my posts... i know its not the greatest team but im enjoying playing it i seem to get more fun out of the game buying english players and using players from the youth - this is about 10 years more than ive ever played any other game on fm before...

I need your help.

I'm playing with Barnsley in the championship. I've switched to a 4-4-2 diamond which I've had success with in the past. The problem is that for some reason my attacking midfielder can't get a rating of over 6.2 when the rest of my team gets around 7. He is also doesn't seem to go for the ball when it is around him or near his area.

I have changed the player I use in the position several times - all of them are great players. The problem is the player instructions, my usual instructions aren't working and neither is the AI attacking mid set up.

How do you lot set your attacking midfielders up?

I don't concede much, do I?

Err, only just noted... 6 straight PL games won 3-0 :)

When it gets finished, I'll post a direct link to a DB containing up to date transfers and everything else.

i never use opposition instructions... i never play with a AM just a flat 442 and my cb's have back arrows on

oops forgot to say- ive tried diamond tactics before and i cnt seem to get the AM to play well either

I've also tried a diamond formation and the AMC always turns out to be a bit useless. But one formation I do use successfully is ...

------ MC ----- MC
AMR ------AMC------AML
-----------ST

Generally my AMC gets the best ratings in that formation, without causing everyone else to turn to shit. But helps if he's handy in front of goal. The other night I demolished Arsenal 6-2 on aggregate in the CL Semi's using that formation, and my AMC got 5 of the goals (He's a freakish AM/FC regen though)

I'm considering starting up a game. Haven't really been into the latest versions. Is it possible to succeed without spending countless hours fine tuning training sessions and tactics? I just want to play, if that makes any sense..?

Me too but has anyone got updates of the new season, new kits, new badges, new players and all the updated transfers I would look but there are 66 pages of this.

I feel like I'm cheating with Aguero and Bojan in my team. I've also got a ridiculous new regen coming up the ranks. I got 106 in the league last year, drawing 4 and losing none. I drew 3 of those cause I decided to play my youth team in the last 5 matches. Also won the CL, demolishing every team, including a 6 - 0 aggregate against Utd (for shame) and a 4 - 0 final win against City (woohoo). I conceded 16 goals in all competitions and scored 137. Aguero and Bojan got 81 of them!

Anyway, to put some challenge back into things, I've decided to try a new, ridiculous tactic this year, which is basically.

ST
--------- AMC --------- AMR
ML-------MC MCd--------
WBL------------------- WBR
DC DC
GK

It's insanely attacking, but I conceded so few goals last season that I don't really care. Time to find out!

Depends on what you want really. If you play as a bigger club, ala Premiership top 5, Barca, Real, Athletico, Valencia, Inter, Roma, Fiorentina (my current team) it's easier to an extent because you have the capabilities to buy awesome players while they're still young and cheap (i.e Obertan for 6m, Bojan for 4m) and then they turn into insanely good players. You still need a solid tactic but generally you won't be tinkering about as much.

As for training, there's loads out there, Tugs Training regimes are great, and there's loads of stuff online about good scouts to buy and stuff.

If you're veering towards a shitter team, that's when things get more complicated and you'll be needing to tinker with tactics a lot more!

Building a nice little team with Bradford. Entering my 4th season, managed to get them into the Championship with a little help from some loanees from United who i was lucky enough to get as my feeder club.

----------------Krul--------------

Darby--Martin Laursen--Sodje--O'shea

Lennon-----Bolatti---Gibson-----Tosic

---------Jo---Madine/Cox---------

Should have that team once Tosic and Jo get their work permits, expecting to get promoted next season.

Tosic didn't get a WP when I agreed personal terms with him, despite living and playing in England for 3 or 4 years.

fecking hell! You're right, him and Jo both cant get permits. I sold 3 good players to make room for those two... fecked this up a bit

I just downloaded the transfer updates from the Fm base site were does anyone know were to put the file. I know were you put skins and all that but not transfer updates.

Going pretty well in my second season with Barnsley, got some quality players on a free and sorted the finances out. Looks like it'll be a good mid table finish in the championship this year BUT I have just had a job offer from Palermo. 15th in Serie A after 10 games, normally I might not take it but they have given me £28m budget.

I presume you mean the database? It just goes in the Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2009/db folder.

I made a random £100m bid for Messi, just because I had absolutely nothing else to spend the money on. To my surprise, Barca accepted it (Fabregas was £140, De Rossi £108, Micah Richards £80 and Sakho £55), so that went through and now I find myself with 1 more winger/attacker than I really like.

Now I have a new £115m transfer budget to splash.....sigh, life as a football manager is hard.
